SANCTITY OF LIFE SUNDAY 3RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 24, 2021 SAINT PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH 4660 West 94th Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois 60453 (708) 423-1040 www.stpauloaklawn.org Pastor John Moeller Director of Music Ruth Sievers
As We Gather Our focus today is on the Epistle, which underscores the importance of each part of the body. It also reminds us that the Church is the Body of Christ, so every life at every stage has value because it is given by God, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, and serves as the temple of the Holy Spirit. In today’s worship we celebrate and give thanks for God’s gift of life, in this world and for eternity. Prelude "The Lord, My God, Be Praised” G. And God the Holy Ghost. Text: Public domain Invocation P In the name of God the Father, C Who creates every life. P In the name of God the Son, C Who redeemed every life. P In the name of God the Holy Spirit, C Who calls every life to be His own. P In the name of our Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, C Amen. Confession and Absolution P God tells us to “lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely” (Hebrews 12:1). Sin can weigh so heavily upon us and cling so closely that it seems impossible to lay it aside. Sin can make us feel so faithless. But we depend upon God’s faithfulness, not ours! He is faithful and just and promises that when we confess our sins, He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Let us then confess our sins to Him.
C Father, we confess our sinful nature clings closely to us. It manifests itself in so many ways. It causes us to doubt the value of our lives. It causes us to doubt the value of other lives. It causes us to value life for the wrong reasons. It so often makes us indifferent when we see life being devalued all around us. We fail to protect and defend life. We fail to proclaim the great value You give to life. Father, have mercy on us and forgive us for Jesus’ sake. P God has had mercy upon us! Jesus, “for the joy that was set before him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2). The hands of God that created you stretched out in love upon the cross to pay the price for all your sins. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of our Lord Jesus and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. T WORD T Introit Psalm 68:4-6, 19-20 P Sing to God, sing praises to his name; C lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! P Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. C God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, P but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. C Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; P God is our salvation; our God is a God of salvation, C and to God the Lord belongs deliverance from death. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray together... C Heavenly Father, who gives value to every life, give us, Your people, the wisdom to see the value You give to life and the love to reflect that value in our living, through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Old Testament Reading T David Anointed King T 1 Samuel 16:4–13 4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.” 7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 10And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the
sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel T Three Parables T Matthew 13:31-34, 44 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 13th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.
31 [Jesus] put (a) parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” 33He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” 34 All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.” [Then Jesus said,] “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Confession of Faith T The First Article of the Apostles’ Creed T P We confess our Christian faith together: C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. P What does this mean? C I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, spouse and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.
