NOTE FROM THE CEO Note from the CEO By any measure, Canada’s employment scene has become increasingly healthy throughout 2018. In March 2018 the overall unemployment rate of 5.8% was the lowest in four decades with all provinces showing steady employment growth. This was followed by further job creation into the summer months. Against the backdrop of trade agreement negotiations and tariffs there lurks some uncertainty, but nevertheless for employers seeking to hire IT staff, competition has increased. If there is an area of the job market worldwide which is growing faster than others it is IT. In the hotspots for IT in Vancouver, GTA and Montreal employers have known for some time that competing for talent has become more difficult, and this is set to continue. However, regions outside the IT hotspots are also experiencing more competition as for example the economy continues to improve in Alberta, and more companies adopt newer technologies. As workers are presented with more choices, understanding compensation trends and deploying effective hiring practices becomes top of mind for most organizations. We present this year’s salary guide as a tool we hope will assist you and your organization to compete for talent in your industry and region. And, as usual, we would be pleased to add some colour and detail over the phone or in person regarding the data in this guide, or on other trends and hiring strategies in your market.
