ROSÉ OF GRENACHE Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard 2020 VINEYARD: Santa Barbara Highlands VARIETAL: 100% Grenache, Clone 2; Noir; Tablas A FARMING: SIP certified, glyphosate-free. ALCOHOL: 12.1% abv FINISHING pH: 3.41 RELEASE DATE: March 3rd, 2021 AVA: Santa Barbara County HARVEST DATE: Sep. 2nd & 3rd 2020 (moon in Aquarius & Pisces) ÉLEVAGE: 4 months in stainless (Aroha) BOTTLING DATE: January 28, 2021 (moon in Cancer) TOTAL PRODUCTION: 1199 cases In 2020, we increased our Rosé reach to include two rows from our beloved Mesa block, bringing some high(er) elevation clusters to this sacred grace dance. Thanks to the warm growing season of 2020, we harvested a full two weeks earlier than in 2019, and captured the stonefruit/riverstone balance I so love in the Highlands' K-block. Add to that the ethereal nature of the Mesa fruit (Ravensare and Sandalwood a-plenty), and the trio becomes something quite transporting. We foot tread the Clone 2 (harvested 9/2), and after 24 hours, we gently pressed the clusters to join their clone Noir/Tablas A sisters (direct-pressed on harvest day). The combined juice spent 43 days fermenting in a cool tank named Aroha. Aroha is Maori for love, and energetically allows all of our intention to surround the wine, until time on gross lees is complete. I have increasingly enjoyed the depth that lees-aging gives to this expression of Grenache over the years, and in this - vintage number 9 - I love the delicate dance between presence, and a rather moon-ward direction. The complexity will pair as perfectly with Paella as it will fish & chips on the beach. Piha, preferably... Tasting notes: Petitgrain, sweetgrass, and tulsi. ___________________________________________________________________________________ M: P.O. 2016 Vespidae Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Thesis: Precision Red A Story: Vespidae (ves-puh-day): Latin name of the family of wasp trying to kill me. The Cliff Notes: The wine throws deep, saturated garnet color. The nose is dark Bing cherry, clove, black pepper, beef broth and dried mushrooms with a hint of snuff and agave. The palate presents as super energetic acidity and concentrated red fruit (as in, just-ripe cherry), with incredible length and persistence. The Vintage: The 2016 growing year took off like a bottle rocket. Early, pre-verasion, it eclipsed the same heat degree days of the three warmest vintages on the books: 2015, 2014 and 2003. Then, and this is the critical part, it mellowed out, with lower heat throughout color-change, ripening and harvest. The net results are wines of good ripeness that preserve all the acid linearity of a slightly cooler year. Ha, we’ll take it. The Building of: Six- to eight-barrel-lot, wild-yeast fermentations in stainless steel, 100% barrel aged for 17 months: 30% new, 18% one year, 16% two year, 36% three year or older. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in March 2018. Ageability: We absolutely recommend that you consider decanting to get it some air within its first three years. This wine should easily climb in complexity beyond ten years. Vineyards: This is our flagship bottling and represents three very pure vineyards: Our St. Dolores Estate (8 years) brought structure plus juicy, Temperance Hill (37 years) brought old-vine complexity on beautiful acid and Gemini (25 years) brought sleek and powerful fruit. — Jim Prosser, owner/winemaker Alcohol: 13.0% pH: 3.56 J.K. 2017 Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietor Fritz Stuhlmuller Winemaker Leo Hansen Vineyards Stuhlmuller Vineyards is located at the southern edge of the Alexander Valley, where it converges with two other highly regarded Sonoma County appellations, Chalk Hill and the Russian River Valley. On its eastern edge, the 150-acre vineyard borders the Russian River. Situated in a location that is part river benchlands and part hillside, the vineyard benefits from its alluvial gravel soils and the more rocky soils of the hillside sections. The Clones The fruit for this Cabernet emphasizes three clones, from seven separate blocks, with vines ranging in age from 10 to more than 25 years old. From the river benchland we use clone 337 for its fruit-forward black cherry flavors. Hillside clone 7 adds floral layers and classic Cabernet cassis and cherry elements. Our oldest plantings from the Belle Terre Vineyard, provide tannic concentration and blue fruit notes. Winemaking Eight individual fermentations were done, using a mix of open-top tanks, and closed-top tanks where the must was pumped over. The closed-top tanks added to palate texture, while the open-top tanks retained fruit intensity. The wine was racked to 48 percent new French oak and underwent native malolactic fermentation. Each lot was fermented and aged separately for 10 months before blending, in barrel for a total of 18 months. The Wine Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers aromas of cassis, aniseed, tobacco leaves and Luxardo cherries with graphite hints. The palate is medium-bodied with well-tempered fruits, grainy and fresh and finishing long on a mineral note. 1,425 cases produced. Technical Alcohol: 14.1% Notes Composition: 94.0% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.0% Petit Verdot pH: 3.68 Total Acidity: 7.0 g/l Production: 1425 cases
