Road Transport Association NZ Inc. August 2020 Chief Operating Officer Tough times for business part of ‘new normal’ By Simon Carson term, this won’t keep the economy going, but it’s a start, especially for small businesses. Primary industries and their associated supply chain play a large role in keeping our nation functioning and people in jobs, and we need support from government to make sure this continues. The closure of Southland’s Tiwai Point smelter is likely to have a devastating effect on Southland’s economy, not to mention the half billion dollar hit from lost export earnings. The expected loss of around 2,500 jobs is the result of increased operational costs, and smelted aluminium prices dropping to levels 15 per cent lower than 2018. Road Transport Association NZ Inc. August 2020 Members Couple starts up business during lockdown By John Bond I would like to introduce Edwin D'Eganneh and Jean Crisp, and of course, the apple of their eye, son Jarvis. This couple decided one night to start up their own freight company called EJ’s Freighters Ltd. They have based their business in Runanga and Greymouth, with the intention to service the whole West Coast, traveling to both Reefton and on to Nelson, seeking clients who want their freight delivered door-to-door. Obviously, this was a big call for the couple, who gave up their respective positions. However, Jean’s employment contract was due to expire anyway and they had an ambition to work together, to better themselves in the future and for the future of their son. The toughest part for this couple was while they were setting themselves up, purchasing a small metro truck, capable of carrying only 5 tonnes, they got hit with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, just as they were about to put themselves into the market. It could not have happened at a worse time for these two—however, Edwin D'Eganneh and Jean Crisp, with son Jarvis, took the gutsy what has amazed me, is their positive move to start up EJ’s Freighters, on the West Coast. attitude towards carrying on even now, with all the barriers they have faced. Road Transport Association NZ Inc. August 2020 Road Transport Forum Time to take a breath on port decisions By Nick Leggett Northport is generally considered too far from main markets to function as a primary import port. It is worth noting that 80 per cent of New Zealand’s freight is distributed to points south of the current Ports of Auckland. What’s at play here? Influential Aucklanders don’t like the look of a working port in their downtown area and, at some point, Ports of Auckland will reach capacity—though COVID-19 might extend that timeframe. Aside from the optics, we need to look at how we can best manage the flow of exports and imports that are the mainstay of our economy. Road Transport Association NZ Inc. August 2020 Health & Safety Safety is all about putting people first By Rob Thomson, SBS Health & Safety Consultant U nless you are in the health and safety industry, health and safety is rarely a favourite topic in the workplace. Any trainers or managers who have ever delivered classroom or compliance-based training before may have experienced a lack of enthusiasm, regardless of how interesting they’ve tried to make the subject! Our company is often invited into organisations with concerns around safety or the need to meet legal obligations. In some respects, the employer probably wants fix-it type options on how to improve safety at work, but actually health and safety is more than that. When our team enters an organisation or a workplace, depending on the need or requirement of the employer, we often start with a range of consultations, walk-arounds, observations, and preliminary training, then deliver some services or implement a system, but initially it is viewed as a compliance- required necessity rather than a passion. The focus of safety shouldn’t just be about safety—it should be about awareness and learning. When safety is made into some over-the-top rule or regulation, it is likely the purpose has been lost. This is why the focus should be more about risk than about safety.
