Auckland RMO Careers Fair 2021 Programme May 3 & 4 | 6pm-9pm Clinical Education Centre, Auckland City Hospital
Welcome to the 19th Auckland RMO Careers Fair! The Careers Fair has been developed and organised by the Clinical Education Unit (CETU) over the last nineteen years to provide RMOs with an opportunity to gather information about the range of specialties to consider for future career options. This year, there are 34 sessions over two evenings, with specialists coming from all the hospitals in the Auckland region. Each session has several speakers – senior doctors who have been practising for a while, members of the Auckland Vocational Training Committees and RMOs currently in training. This is an excellent opportunity to talk to people working in the specialties to find out what their specialty is really like and what is required to apply for a training place. Your Clinical Supervisors, Education Supervisors or Directors of Clinical Training at your DHB are also good people to talk to. You could also check out www.careermed.co.nz for information about specialties. The site also includes a psychometric test and has practical advice on applications and deadlines, writing a good CV and interview tips. Good luck with your decision and enjoy the Careers Fair. Programme Getting the most out of the Careers Fair Our presenters will talk briefly about their chosen specialty and there will be plenty of time for questions. We encourage you to ask about the things that you want to know. Here are some suggested questions. What do you like most about your specialty? What particular abilities do you think are important in your specialty area? What are the challenges of the job? What are the workforce projections for your specialty? How many training places are there in this specialty? What is the impact on family life of your specialty? Would you choose this area again? What is the remuneration like in public or in private? The Northern Regional Alliance (NRA) will also offer presentations throughout the Careers Fair on how to write a good CV and interviewing tips for your next position. 3
Choosing your Speciality How do you choose a specialty and what are the factors that might influence your choice? Career development theory suggests that there are defined stages in the process of making a career decision and that at each of these stages there are questions you might ask yourself. This process of systematically analysing yourself and a job or specialty will enable you to achieve a good match between yourself as a person and the job that you would like to do in the future. 4 RMO Careers Fair 2021

Choosing a career direction is not a one-off decision. Many people shift direction several times during their lifetime. Others choose to have multiple jobs, balancing their needs and interests around several roles. However, each time you reach a career crossroads you might need to ask yourself some of the same questions. What is right for you in your twenties may not necessarily be right for you in your thirties or forties – personal circumstances change, specialties develop in various directions and new opportunities arise. 5
