Welcome Cyclists! Thank you for registering and joining us for the 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo. The Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo is a one-day, recreational and non-timed, road cycling event that takes you from downtown Sanford to New Smyrna Beach and back, on a flat and mostly low-traffic course where you’ll pedal among different landscapes. As you pedal from Sanford to New Smyrna Beach, you'll ride under tree canopies, along lakes, rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, and among large, untouched acreage parcels. The views continue to evolve as you move from segment to segment. At the end of the ride, you’ll enjoy complimentary pizza from Sanford Pizza Company, overlooking the Sanford Marina on Lake Monroe in downtown Sanford. Thank you for choosing the Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo! Enjoy the ride! Event Packets include the following items: ● Event t-shirt ● Number bib ● Safety pins ● Wristband ● Printed route map and cue sheet ● Postcard bundle with upcoming CAAM Tour Series events ● Miscellaneous items By receiving the Event Packet by mail, participants can get ready for the event before leaving home, secure their number bibs to their jerseys and sleep in a little longer knowing that they don’t have to stand in line with hundreds of other cyclists checking in. It’s a much more relaxed setting for everyone! We encourage everyone to register early at other upcoming CAAM Tour Series events to take advantage of the new Event Packet Home Delivery feature! NOTE: Event packets typically arrive the week of the event. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Below is some important information to be aware of prior to the event. Neutral Start The first 2 miles, on E. Seminole Blvd, are considered to be a “Neutral Start” zone with a warm up pace due to multiple traffic circles and raised crosswalks. Keeping the pace down will keep the pelotons safer. Pace can pick-up once the pelotons pass through the third traffic circle. Lunch Time Lunch/Pizza will be served from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm Mobile Bike Shops Mobile Bike Shop vehicles will be on the course to provide mechanical assistance on the course. Please bring cash or credit card to pay for parts and/or services rendered. Restrooms at the US Post Office rest stop Portable toilets will not be provided at the first and last rest stop at the US Post Office. However, there are restrooms available at the Osteen TrailHead at the base of the trail bridge. Take the trail toward the bridge and stay on the lower part to the north side to the trailhead parking lot. The restrooms are in the green building. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 11
NEW SMYRNA BEACH Art Festival in New Smyrna Beach The Art Fiesta is being held in New Smyrna Beach the weekend of the Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo (26-27 Feb 2022) at Old Fort Park, at the intersection of N. Riverside Drive and the North Causeway Restrooms at Flagler Avenue Boardwalk There are public restrooms at the Flagler Avenue Boardwalk on the south side of the parking lot. We recommend bringing your bike inside the restroom instead of leaving it outside the building. Beach Traffic in New Smyrna Beach The traffic on Flagler Avenue, heading toward the Flagler Avenue Boardwalk, from the bottom of the North Causeway bridge to the ocean, can be heavy when the weather is nice. If the traffic is heavy, an alternate route to the beach is to turn right on S. Peninsula Ave (1st traffic signal after the bridge), then turn left onto Columbus Ave. Take Columbus Ave to Buenos Aires St, then turn left to Flagler Ave. CAUTION: Traffic will be high in the area. Be defensive watching cars in the area. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 12

TRAIL OPTIONS for the 27 and 54 mile routes The 27 and 54 mile routes have the option of riding on the trail or on the road. The trail portion is part of the St Johns River-to-Sea Loop. You can view the entire trail system here TRAIL ENTRANCE The entrance to the trail is diagonally across from the start at the traffic light. If you are a trail rider, please line up at the back of the staging area in order to have easier access to the trail after the road riders have departed. Be careful on the first section of the trail, where pedestrians may be walking. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 27
TRAIL OVERVIEW The trail option allows you to take the trail for the majority of the route with the exception of the final 4 miles of the 27 and 54 mile routes. The final four miles will reconnect with the road portion of the course at the base of the bridge over the St. Johns River on SR-415 and Celery Avenue. The trail begins immediately at the starting point of the event, where the trail will travel parallel to the road routes until the trail takes you over the Lake Monroe bridge. At that point, the trail will then go through Gemini Springs and then run parallel to Dirksen Dr/DeBary Ave before getting onto the East Central Regional Rail Trail. The trail will continue to the bridge over SR-415. At the base of the bridge, on the other side of SR-415, will be RS-1 (rest stop 1) at the US Post Office. The 27-mile route will exit the trail at that point. 27-mile route | Half-Metric Century Upon exiting the trail, the 27-mile route will turn right toward the post office and will continue on the road section until reaching SR-415, where the route will go back onto the trail on the east side of SR-415 (parallel to SR-415), go under the bridge and then continue to Celery Ave, where the final 4 miles will be on the road with the other routes. 54-mile route | Half Century The 54-mile route will continue on the trail to Vergie’s Feed Station, which is the turn-around location for the route. On the return, the trail will return to the base of the Osteen bridge and exit at the post office. The route will then follow the same route at the 27-mile route above to the end of the course. Exiting the trail onto Celery Avenue The trail portion of the route will end at the intersection of SR-415 and Celery Avenue. Exit the trail/sidewalk onto Celery and turn right. ROUTE MARKING & COLOR SYSTEM Route Color System ● The Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo is part of the CAAM Tour Series and follows the CAAM Tour Series Route Color System. ● This is a universal color system used with the majority of events in the CAAM Tour Series. ● Colors associated with each route also correspond with the colors used to mark each route and the colors of the numbers on the number bibs. ○ As an example, for the 100-mile century route, the century course will be marked with YELLOW arrows and the numbers on the number bibs for the participants that registered for the Century route will have YELLOW numbers. ● The first digit of the numbers will also correspond with the first digit of the route distance. ○ As an example, the Century participants will have numbers that begin with "1", the same as the first digit of the 100-mile course.. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Route Color Assignments Route Color Century Yellow Metric Century Plus Orange Half Century Pink Half Metric Century Green Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 29
ROUTE MARKING ● The Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo will be marked with spray-painted arrows ● Very few, if any, above-ground signs will be on the course Signs and Spray Painted Arrows Above-Ground Signs ● Above-ground signs will not be used consistently on the route. ● With above-ground signs, there is always a chance that someone will remove a sign which would/could completely alter the direction of our event participants and take them off-course. ● In some cases, there MAY be an above-ground sign but strictly in locations that may require more visual attention, such as an easy-to-miss turn. Spray-Painted Arrows ● Spray-painted arrows are permanently painted on the road. ● Arrows will be a color assigned to each route. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 30
Arrow Placement, Location and Direction Route Arrow Description ● The route will be marked with 12" spray-painted arrows. ● In some cases, Route Arrow adhesive stickers may be used in lieu of the spray-painted arrows. ● The colors of the Route Arrows used will be the same as the spray-painted arrows. Route Arrow Examples ● Route Marking Locations ● Each turn will have three sets of spray-painted arrows at the approximate distances below prior to the turn ○ 25, 250 & 500 feet before the turn ● In some cases, the actual marking distances may differ due to specific conditions or limitations. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 31
Route Arrow Placement ● The arrows are typically painted in the bike lane or shoulder in order to avoid losing vibrancy due to cars driving over the arrows and dirt wearing the colors down. Route Arrow Direction ● The arrows will be pointed in a 45 degree angle in the direction of the turn. ● The arrows will be "stacked" from the longest distance at the top, to the shorter distances below. ● As an example, the yellow arrow would be above the orange arrow, which would be above the green arrow, etc. Straight Arrows ● In some cases, arrows pointing straight ahead will be used, typically at a major intersection or at SOME stop signs (not every stop sign). Confirmation Arrows ● There will be a "Confirmation" arrow immediately after the turn to indicate that you made the correct turn. If you do not see a confirmation arrow shortly after making a turn, stop and check your route map. ● On long stretches with no turns, there will be an occasional “Confirmation Arrow” to let you know that you are still on the correct route. Typically the “Confirmation Arrows” will be every 5 miles. Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 32

Bearded Bike Doc The Bearded Bike Doc brings professional bicycle maintenance, detailing, upgrades, and repairs directly to your location in Central Florida. Bryce, the Bearded Bike Doc, Anderson began his mobile bike service in the spring of 2017 with a mission to share his love for bikes and skill with a wrench with as many fellow cyclists as possible. His wife would certainly confirm that if the Doc isn't riding, fixing, cleaning or improving a bike he is likely still peeking at one or maybe trimming his beard. The Bearded Bike Doc will bring his passion for all things bicycle, along with a borderline obsessive attention to detail and quality, to each and every job he is hired to tackle. From his roadside flat tire service to complete bike builds and overhauls, this top notch mechanic is available outside of many bike shop's normal business hours, comes to your location and can also be found at many local cycling events. If you like to be involved in the nitty gritty of your favorite rig, Doc will help you get a peek under the hood and certainly doesn't mind a friendly conversation (or a shot of espresso) while his careful work is accomplished. https://www.BeardedBikeDoc.com/ Mardi Gras Pizza Fondo Ride Guide 60
