REPORT ON COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES BETWEEN THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE BREMEN (SOAB), HOCHSCHULE BREMEN (HSB), GERMANY AND THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE (FOA), UNIVERSITY OF KHARTOUM (UOFK), SUDAN University of Khartoum
This report summarizes the whole story of collaboration bet- ween the School of Architec- ture Bremen (SoAB), Hochschule Bremen (HSB), Germany and the Faculty of Architecture (FoA), University of Khartoum (UofK), Sudan. It is an attempt to give a panoramic highlight of the miles- tone activities and events that have helped in fostering the relati- on between the two institutions sin- ce its establishment in 2010. These activities represent the backbone in the success of the cooperation and collaboration between the two universities. The increasing interest of both institutions in flouris- hing this mutual relation opens the prospects and sets the horizon for its growth and continuity for years and hopefully for decades. This interest is believed to be present at the institutional level as well as the individual level of all participants at both universities. I am proud of being involved in both institutions, and in fact, I feel myself part of both. Akram Elkhalifa Bremen, August 2017 1

SoAB STUDY TRIP SEPTEMBER 2013 In September 2013, the SoAB organized an academic stu- dy trip to Dubai and Sudan as part of a module delivered at SoAB about building with clay. The SoAB approached the FoA exploring the possibilities of colla- boration within the scope of the trip and its objectives. The FoA responded immediately by showing its readiness to pro- vide whatever might contribute to the success of the field trip . Consequently, extensive commu- nications took place to formulate a program proposal which was subject to discussion and revi- sion by both sides. The visit took place during the period from 20th to 29th September 2013. The visiting team from SoAB compo- sed of 5 academic staff mem- bers and 14 students. The acade- mic staff included Prof. Clemens Bonnen (Head of SoAB), Prof. Dr. Martin Speth, Dipl.-Ing. Gehadel- din Adam, Dipl.-Ing. Frank Ass- mann, and Mrs. Sabrina Winckler. 5

A design competition was organized during the winter semester 2016/17 involving the students joining the two modules of “Building with Clay”, namely MA. 5.1/5.3 and BA 2.2. The ultimate objective of this competition was to develop design ideas for the stage house that should be built out of clay as the main building material. A couple of meetings and work- shops with the project stake- holders were held aiming at communicating all the project needs to the students to help them formulating their ideas. 19
A jury involving different parties and individuals active in and/ or showing interest in the project was formed to take responsibility of evaluating the final output of the students’ groups. The jury included: 1 - Prof. Akram Elkhalifa SOAB/UoK 2 - Fr. Annemarie Czichon Osamtsleiterin Neustadt 3 - Prof. Clemens Bonnen SOAB – Chairperson 4 - Hr. Christian Schilling SUBV 5 - Fr. 16-19.11.2016: SEIZE THE EARTH - BUILD WITH CLAY SYMPOSIUM The SoAB is enthusiastic about providing and sharing knowled- ge about clay as a building- material through design projects and research activi- ties. Therefore, a symposium was organized during the period from 16-19 November 2016 as part of the Winter Semester 2016/17 activities aiming at widening the pool of knowledge and experience sharing in the field of building with clay along with the objective of raising aware- ness about the potentials of clay. The workshop served as a prepa- ratory framework to familiarise the students with the basic conside- rations, methods, and techniques of building with clay as well as the necessary tools and equipment. It also aimed at exposing the students to some international experiences and advancements in the field of earth architecture worldwide. The outcome was reflected on the project of LFP through the realization of some 25

“demo components”. Prof. Dr. Elkhalifa, jointly with Prof. Speth, were responsible for the organization of this event. Pioneers in the field of earth architecture from Germany and internationally were invi- ted to present their knowledge, experience, research and best practice, namely: Prof. Rowland Keable, Dipl.-Ing. Tom Leiermann, and Ms. Jasmine Alia Blaschek. In the beginning of this workshop, Prof. Bonnen and Prof. Speth high- lighted the efforts been made at SoAB to introduce modules focu- sing on building with clay. At the time of the workshop, a group of 40 students from the FoA accom- panied by Dr. Ahmed Abdallah were visiting the SoAB. The visiting group participated in the work- shop and enriched the discussion through reviewing the practice of building with clay in Sudan. The workshop program also involved a visit to Lucie Flecht- mann Platz along with an exhi- bition that demonstrated the output of the modules “Building with Clay” and the design ideas for LFP competition. 27
13-15.01.2017: PRACTICAL WORKSHOP II - PREFABRICATED COLUMNS As part of the Winter Semester 2016/17, this workshop was orga- nized to further demonstrate the potentials of clay and provide the students with the opportuni- ty to explore and practice some of the techniques of building with clay. Each group of students de- veloped a design idea for small elements that could be built in 3 days. The winning idea was a prefabricated clay column and a portable stand; the workshop focused on the production of the prefabricated units while the er- ection was made in the following workshop. The students were ex- posed to the experience of pre- paring the formwork and the se- tup of the production area when working with clay, and most inte- restingly, experiencing the joy of ramming. 28

28 -30.04.2017: PRACTICAL WORK- SHOP III – ERECTION OF PREFABRI- CATED COLUMNS During the first part of the Sum- mer Semester 2017, a workshop was organized to erect the prefa- bricated units, produced during the former semester, to form clay columns in the room AB 516 in the Neustadt Campus. The students worked collectively in the setup of the room prior to the construc- tion commencement. The whole group erected two columns of clay in the designated space to demonstrate the elegance of the material and its potentials. 30

16-19.06.2017: PRACTICAL WORK- SHOP IV – CLAY ELEMENTS FOR LFP This closing workshop took place as part of the Summer Semester 2017 aiming at producing clay elements to be erected in LFP. A couple of design ideas were developed, however, a clay bench was the one that was selected for further design ela- boration, and consequently realization. The end product is believed to fit good within the con- text in harmony with the overall elements in the open space of the project and in line with its concept. 32
