RESPONSE TO COVID-19 SITUATION – APRIL 2020 Reaction to • Develop ‘Freedom at Home’ creative learning resource packs for families impacts of • Decision to cancel or ‘adjust’ festival early May 2020 COVID-19 on DIGITAL/ONLINE AND BROADCAST PROGRAMME Freedom • Partnership with BBC Humberside fundamental Festival 2020 • • Short turnaround digital commissions with a focus on local voices Maintaining International collaborative projects as a live • • Projects ‘pivot’ to online and digital form Commission 12 new projects/artworks – 8 with local artists public event • Local partnerships such as BTO, Arts Dev and Hull Truck hugely valuable • The team rapidly learns a lot about different ways of working remotely, our partnership with the BBC reaps great benefits • Team develops skills for producing online content thanks to support from BBC experts and local collaborators NOVA Studios • Maintain national and international presence within program • The first (and we hope last) ‘Freedom Festival at Home’ Programme goes live on the 3rd September 2020 – Content is available for 7 days from launch to retain a ‘sense of festival’

PR and Press Coverage ‘Freedom at Home 2020’ • Successful first year media partnership with BBC - extensive air time and media coverage. • Featured in the Metro newspaper’s Thursday What’s on page as top recommended event • Article in The Stage by Lyn Gardner (The city is a safe haven for artists – we must not write its obituary) where she describes Freedom Festival as a “boundary-busting event.” • Post-festival feature in The Telegraph - A postcard from Hull, why culture will prevail over the rule of six • Shortlisted as finalist in two Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards (Arts and Culture Award and Tourism Event Award) • Successful development and launch of new Freedom Festival app - with widespread media coverage in business press • Widespread positive headlines in Hull Daily Mail Why robots are busy drawing people’s faces and Every event beamed into homes across the world. Alongside other local websites and blogs such The Hull Story, Hull is This, The Hull Hub, On Magazine (Yorkshire) and The Yorkshire Times. • Generous coverage on both BBC Look North and ITV Calendar over the Festival weekend.

ACTUAL FUNDING AND INCOME LOSSES IN 2020 • Loss of sponsorship, commercial, ticketed and partnerships - £ 74000 CANCELLATION FEES AND OTHER LIABILITIES • Total cancellation cost in 20/21 financial year = £ 49443.80 • Close down of Trusts and Foundation funding schemes in 2020 Led to temporary suspension of ongoing program development Financial MITIGATION OF FINANCIAL IMPACT Impacts of • Maintaining staff structure using the flexibility of furloughing scheme • Deferring some program to 2021 as postponements not cancellations • Office relocation to minimize costs of office space and meeting rooms COVID-19 in • Current lockdown means everyone back to working from home unless on critical site visits for 2021 project planning 2020 STRATEGY FOR FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY • Presenting ‘one-off’ projects to stay visible and maintain sponsor and partners • Continuing to produce ‘from home’ creative learning resources • Working on feasibility for a new winter/spring event • Applied for ACE project grants – Not eligible for CRF funding • Continue using furlough scheme • Applying for permit-free status for international artists • Developing new national networks • Adjusting fund-raising strategy

• Year long project engaging 730 local ‘Watchers’ THE HULL VIGIL • Engaging 30-40 ‘Companions’ • UK premiere May 2021 until • Cross sector collaboration with ESTEEM group and Hull College • Reframes Freedom Festival presence as an all-year artistic programme and arts organization May 2022 • Maintains a public presence allowing organisation to attract new partners and supporters
• ‘Extended 16 day festival model utilising COVID safe venues and manageable outdoor locations FREEDOM • Programme which can be experienced by small numbers and individuals – social distancing FESTIVAL • Retain budget option on last weekend to add more 2021 music and performances if situation changes ‘MODELLING’ • Increase in neighbourhood projects • Planning cut off deadline late March • Continue feasibility of new event in March 2022
