What are some disadvantages of staying in homestay Every Home is Different • Living in a homestay, you must respect the rules and expectations set by your hosts. This can include a curfew, rules about guests, checking-in, etc. • Each home has been selected for you individually. Sometimes this type of environment isn’t ideal for some students • Each Homestay is different; some families are large and some are small. • Meals might not be something you are used to or something you dislike • Homes in the downtown area may be smaller than homes further from the school. • Homestay family might treat it like a business • Your Homestay is not a hotel; it is someone’s home. Please show them respect. • Lack of privacy = Sometimes, there can be privacy issues when the host or his family members do not know where to draw the line.

Food – Meal Plans • Your host will provide you with breakfast, lunches to take to school and dinner. • In North America breakfast is the smallest meal of the day. Possible breakfast choices are: Cereal, Muffin, toast, eggs, etc. Lunch is usually something quick like sandwiches, fruit and a drink and dinner tends to be the biggest meal of the day. Food – Meal Plans • It is very common and normal for students to make their own breakfast and lunches. Your host will make you a dinner daily. • Food between meal times is considered a snack. If a host family is enjoying a snack together, then they will include you. If you would like other snacks, you must purchase them yourself. • If you come home late for dinner, then your host will leave food that you can heat up for you in the fridge. (you must inform the host in advance) • You should phone your hosts by 5:00 pm to tell them It is important to tell your if you are going to be late or missing dinner. host the foods that you like and the foods that you don’t like. Curfew • Every home has different rules but for the most part, 9 pm during the week and 10 pm for the weekend. • For some reason, if you are going to be late, please make sure to speak to your host family in advance and explain why. Houseguests • If you wish to invite a guest to visit your Homestay, your host must give you permission a few days in advance. • Guests are not permitted to sleep overnight in Homestay without permission from the host and permission from the school.
Yes No Your Bedroom • We ask that students and host families respect each other’s privacy, and DO NOT go into each No other’s bedrooms without permission. • Students should keep their rooms clean and tidy and empty the garbage at least once a week. • Please DO NOT eat or store food in your bedroom as this may attract insects and cause a bad smell. • You can use the common areas in the house.
Washroom • Try to keep it under 15 minutes for other students and family members. • Please dry the floor so that others will not slip. • Keep sink area clean after every use Housekeeping • We encourage students to help with meal time chores (clearing the table, putting your dishes away) • You are NOT expected to do any housework (vacuuming, mopping, etc.). • You are also NOT expected to do any babysitting.
Laundry • Please make sure that you fully understand how to use the machines. Some hosts will show you how it works or some hosts will do it for you. • It is normal for students to do their laundry once a week. • You should only do laundry if you can do a full basket. Internet • Internet access is included in your Homestay Fee. • You must provide your own laptop, you will NOT be allowed to use your host family’s computer. • You can search websites. However, you can NOT download music or movies – in Canada we are charged extra fees for downloading.
Telephone • You are allowed to use the telephone in your host’s home when calling within the Toronto area. • Try to keep your conversation to under 20 minutes long. • If you are going to have an extra long phone call you should discuss it with your host. • If you are a person who is going to use the phone a lot you may want to buy a cell phone or calling card. Smoking • Your friends and family should NOT phone you on the host’s • For health, hygiene and fire safety phone after 10:00 p.m. or before 08:00 a.m. reasons, smoking is not permitted in Homestays. You must smoke outdoors only. • You should also ask where you can smoke outside of the house and only smoke in the designated area.

Refund Policy Moving Homestays • For the initial three-month period is not refundable.
