 2021 VIRTUAL MICHIGAN ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Remembrance IN - Michigan UMC
Gathering together is sacred…perhaps we
know that now more than ever after this
extended time apart due to COVID 19. Life
itself is sacred, and the lives of individuals
we know and love are precious and sacred
as well. Each year at Annual Conference, as
we hear that great Wesley hymn, “And Are
We Yet Alive?” we are reminded that we have
lost some who are dear to our fellowship
and gathering. Indeed, it is a holy moment in
worship when we name them, and then claim
them to be eternally with God.

For the lives of those we name in these pages,
we give God thanks. Their ministries made
a difference. Their loving ways blessed our
days. They taught us about Jesus with their
words and their actions. How grateful we
are to God for their presence among us, and
for the promise of their presence in God’s
eternity now.

Well done, good and faithful servants!

For your very lives we say, “Thanks be to God!”

JOANNE SLUYTER PARSHALL KLINE
Born July 24, 1929. Served: Williamsburg; Traverse City: Central.
Died December 25, 2019.
Joanne will long be remembered for her grounded, insightful sermons,
illustrated with real-life stories. She celebrated others by sending over 1000
birthday cards per year, each with a personalized inspirational message written
in beautiful penmanship. She thrived on fun and silliness. Joanne loved dogs and
babies. When it became clear that her five children were enough, Joanne took
in foster babies, nurturing them until their adoptions became finalized. In her
1990 Christmas letter to her children she wrote, “I am grateful for the great gift
each of you are to me … I wish for each of you the satisfaction that comes from
the knowledge that you have ‘really lived’ rather than that you simply spent a
certain number of years on this earth or that you accumulated a certain amount
of material wealth or education or ‘success’ or attractiveness or personality. As I
grow older, I think that God cares very little about these kinds of achievements.”
Joanne was a beautiful gift.

jobs, working for Citizens Bank in Flint, Montrose Orchards, and as secretary for the
Flushing Community Schools. She later was called into the ministry of The United
Methodist Church. When not working, Kay enjoyed spending time at the Otisville
Senior Center, working with the Forgotten Man Missionaries and collecting John

Pistons and Lions. She also enjoyed watching University of Michigan football.
Most important in her life was spending time with her children and spoiling
                         her grandchildren.

                         MICHAEL E. LONG
                         Born May 17, 1955. Served: 1984 Clare; Served: 1984 Rosebush, Clare; 1990

Location; 2018 Retired; 2020 Twin Lake. Died January 7, 2021.
Mike’s heart was to be a helper: the hands and feet of Jesus to a world that was
hurting around him. His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
and self-control were emulated in his life of service. Mike loved the Lord and sharing
the Word. He had a God-given talent for music and enjoyed sharing this talent from
singing to leading choirs to playing guitar, drums, and piano to leading the praise
team. He also had a talent for computers, electronics, mechanics, and woodworking.
Another of Mike’s passions was his family. He was proud of his children and adored
all 20 of his grandchildren. Any time there were soccer games, cheerleading,
performances at school, birthdays, holiday dinners, he would be there, but the
camping trips were his favorite. He is greatly missed by his wife, family and so many
here on Earth, but we know he is celebrating in his new eternal home.

Retired; 2007 Azalia, London; 2009 Retired. Died December 10, 2020.
After teaching Young 5s and 1st grade for 27 years, our mom Ruth McCully
became a licensed Local Pastor. Her lifelong dedication to serving Jesus and
spreading the Gospel was evident in every aspect of her life. Pastor Ruth, as
she was called, also became known as the Frog Lady and loved to share her
acronym, Fully Rely On God, while giving frog pencils, stickers, ceramic figurines
or various sizes of stuffed frogs to people she would meet so they would always
have the reminder to put their faith in God. We miss her and grieve with so many
others who lost their loved ones to the pandemic, as we did with Ruth. Our
mom touched the lives of many and will forever be missed by her family, friends
and former parishioners.

NANCY GAIL POWERS

Newton; 2012 Perry/Shaftsburg; 2020 Retired. Died September 27, 2020.
Nancy loved her family, her God, her faith, and loved learning. Throughout her
life she served as a camp counselor, mother, friend, educational aide, swim
instructor, and as a pastor in The United Methodist Church. She lived what she
believed and God used that to help others in their spiritual walk with Christ. I feel
incredibly blessed to have shared thirty-one years of marriage with her and will
miss her smiles and kind spirit. Lovingly, husband Paul

DAVID P. RAHN
Born October 10, 1946. Served: 1978 Monroe: St Paul’s; 1980 Halsey, Holly: Mt.
Bethel; 1987 Genesee, Thetford Center; 1988 Honorable Location; 1999 West
Forest, Arbela; 2000 Fostoria, West Deerfield; 2007 Retired. Died July 17, 2020.
Dave was born in Elgin, IL, the son of missionaries Robert Rahn and Janet
Stansell Rahn. In Japan, he attended Canadian Academy, where he formed
lifelong friendships. Dave was six when the family arrived, and quickly took an
interest in Japanese language and culture. Dave’s experiences bridging cultures
and surviving a serious illness, combined with his observant character, shaped
a lifetime of wry and generous observation and care that would interconnect
in ministry, and hospice social work, and mental health counseling. While
pursuing his Ph.D. in Japanese History at the University of Michigan, Dave met
Nan Sawyer in 1971 at the Wesley Foundation. Dave was quiet and diligent in his
studies (“in the books” as Nan explains), while Nan was athletic and outgoing.
The two fell in love, marrying June 30, 1973. His calm and reassuring presence
and his wonderful wit combined in a unique and purposeful spark that is simply
beyond description.

She leaves a legacy that embodies the importance of volunteering, the
significance of teaching and the importance of valuing a child’s perspective. She
                         will be missed by many.

                         PAUL K. SCHEIBNER
                         Born July 28, 1928. Served: 1959 Girard; 1961 School; 1962 Concord; 1965
                         Martin-Shelbyville; 1970 Dansville-Vantown; 1974 East Lansing Chapel Hill-
Gunnisonville; 1978 Leave of Absence. 1993 Retired. Died December 10, 2020.
Paul was born in Detroit. During the Korean War he was stationed in Okinawa
where he participated in mission work. This led to his career in the ministry.
Upon return from the Army, he enrolled at Albion College then continued to Iliff
School of Theology. Returning to Michigan, he served five parishes. He took a
leave of absence midcareer, eventually working for Oldsmobile while maintaining
his pastoral credentials although never resuming a full-time post. It was his basic
nature to want to help, to make all he encountered happy and understood. He
would recognize a need and set forth to address it. Mission work and youth
programs were central to his ministry. Paul had a warm smile and a genuine
curiosity about everyone he met. He truly loved life, his God, his family, and
service to others. He embraced and held close all the experiences and emotions
and beauty the world could offer.

Following graduation from high school and service in the U.S. Navy, Bill obtained
a pilot’s license, farmed, and worked at G.M. Truck and Coach in Pontiac. In 1950
he married Norma Rose Henderson. After accepting Jesus Christ as their personal
savior at a 1953 Billy Graham Crusade followed by a series of “Spiritual Renewal”
services at their home church, Bill felt a call to preach. During his pastoral ministry,
he served on the boards of Ordained Ministry, Evangelism, Missions, and many
others. From 1969-1983, Bill was the Civil Air Patrol Chaplain, combining his love of
flying with his love of God. Norma and Bill made many journeys to the Holy Land as
hosts for Educational Opportunities tours. He was a woodworker and rock collector,
but above all a husband, father, and grandfather who loved family gatherings at their
farm, annual trips to the Experimental Aircraft Association show in Oshkosh, and
serving with the people of God.

painting business. While there he felt a call to Christian ministry, and upon graduation
from Michigan State University and Union Theological Seminary, he was ordained
in the West Michigan Conference. In all his appointments he provided a level of
advanced leadership in administration, a deep transformative faith rooted in justice
and outreach, and a sharp mind and powerful delivery in his pulpit preaching. He was
a leader’s leader, helping others, laity and clergy, to hone their God-breathed gifts
and graces for the betterment of God’s kingdom. He also enjoyed riding his beloved
Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, following sports teams, the comings and goings of
his sons and their families, and fishing throughout the Great Lakes. He was blessed
with wit, humor, a quick smile, and a creative and curious nature. He never stopped
reading and learning because that meant he could continue teaching and leading.

Michigan Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He inspired and
encouraged many people for the Lord in the churches that he faithfully served.
One of his great gifts was his voice – a deep and resonant bass often featured
in his church choirs and as a soloist. On his retirement in 1991, close friend Rev.
Al Bamsey highlighted aspects of his character that he admired: steadiness,
calmness, a man of principle, great companion, humility, and one who is never
loath to tell a story!

Bellaire: Community; 1991 Mulliken, Sebewa Center; 1993 Retired. Died January
                         30, 2021.
Gordon was born in Baltimore, raised in Chicago, and ended up in San Diego
after four years in the U.S. Navy. An unusual conversion experience while in the
Navy led him to the Methodist chaplain on board ship and to his baptism at sea.
He enrolled at California Western University on Point Loma and attended First
Methodist Church in San Diego. In 1955 Gordon met Nancy Comstock, a Grand
Rapids girl who had gone to San Diego to teach. They were married that same
year. From Cal Western he went on to Garrett Biblical Institute. Being in ministry
provided opportunities and challenges with wonderful people in all the churches.
One of the challenges occurred in 1977: the Bear Lake church burned to the
ground, but unique ways to raise funds were found and and the debt on the new
building was paid off in remarkable time. Gordon enjoyed the fellowship with
other clergy and appreciated being able to serve his Lord through The United
                         Methodist Church.

Creek, MI, counseling drug addicts and alcoholics. He served as the Methodist
delegate to the Michigan Council of Churches and to Western Michigan
University’s Ecumenical Institute. Rev. Steele was a member of the Society
of Biblical Literature and Exegesis. He was blessed to travel twice to the Holy
Land and received the Order of St. Luke vows while there in 1990. He loved to
sing, was a member of the Saint Luke’s Choristers, and had most of the United
Methodist hymnal memorized. He will be dearly missed for his love of life, music
and his family. He will forever be remembered for preaching the word of God,
sharing his love of God, and teaching about faith and Christianity. His love and
support for others will forever be his legacy.

whenever needed, caring for the unhoused, and embracing diversity, equality,
and inclusion as modeled in the life and teachings of Jesus. He was honored to
serve his community, and he did so with grace and humility. He is remembered
through the many lives he touched and the life experiences he shared, including

peace, justice, wit and joy. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Albion
College and his Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological
Seminary, and later served on the board of trustees of each institution. Upon
the completion of his 1969 book Faith Under Fire, Don was awarded a Doctor

the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies where he spent 15 winters. Don was
blessed by his 65-year marriage to his late wife Kathleen; in the final chapters
of his life he found new love and joy with Sara Ellison. As his daughter, son
and son-in-law are all United Methodist pastors, Don would often say, “Ministry
doesn’t run in our family, it fairly gallops.”

telling jokes, tinkering with cars, boating, camping, and spending time with
family. His sense of humor and love of people never failed and was present until
the end. Throughout his life his faith in Jesus never wavered along with his belief
that this was but a temporary home and a much better one had been prepared
for him with his Father in heaven.

to see the movie “Around the World in 80 Days.” That first date was appropriate –
while he loved his life in the church, he also possessed a desire to see the United
States and the world. He traveled to most of the states, driving everywhere with his

Doris was born in Abilene, KS. She and her family lived through the challenges of
the Great Depression and the Second World War. She married Norman Crotser on
December 23, 1953. They shared nearly 25 years of marriage prior to his death
in 1978. Doris had a long and storied career as both an early elementary school
teacher and daycare owner and remained in touch with many of the children she
taught throughout her life. Doris loved to read and was a life-long learner. She
also had a mischievous side and she was not afraid to play pranks on her children
and grandchildren. Her family will remember her for her humor as well as for her
                          fundamental decency.

                          BARBARA R. CRUMM
                          Spouse of Rev. Donald Crumm
                          Born February 12, 1925
                          Died December 1, 2020
Barbara was born in the family’s farm home in Howe, IN. She was proud of the
fact that she descended from one of the Midwest’s oldest Methodist families. One
of her maternal ancestors was the first female Methodist missionary to India. She
met her future husband, Donald Crumm, at a young adult gathering at Adrian
College. Barbara graduated suma cum laude; Donald also was a brilliant student
and a World War II Navy veteran. After Donald’s ordination, Barbara was an active
partner in ministry with him, serving congregations in New Jersey and Michigan.
In retirement, they moved to Goodrich and served Brent Creek and Northwest
Venice. Because of family ties to Kentucky, she became involved in supporting
Red Bird Mission, which was appropriate because the cardinal was her personal
avatar; as such, she collected dozens of artful renditions of cardinals..

pride and joy was Sycamore Creek United Methodist Church, which he helped
found with Barb. He would arrive early on Sunday mornings to help set up the
equipment for two services, childcare, and Sunday school. And he dearly loved
Pastor Barb. He was by her side every day and willing to do anything to support
the church, a servant at heart. Bob could make your day with a hug or a simple

               “For All the Saints”
                    #711 (UMHymnal)

1) For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever bless’d.
                 Alleluia, alleluia!
 4) Oh, bless’d communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine,
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
                 Alleluia, alleluia!
