SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27th, 2022 Pastor’s Corner The Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time “Being Christian is not easy but makes us happy: the path pointed out to us by the heavenly Father is that of ‘mercy’ and of ‘interior peace.’,” (Pope Francis, Morning Homily, September 13, 2018). Jesus the Teacher presents lessons as insightful today as they were when he taught his disciples two thousand years ago. In a few days we will begin the season of Lent, when we will be reminded of the lessons Jesus taught us as he anticipated his eventual death. But this weekend we hear Jesus during his ministry teaching everyday wisdom for ordinary times in our lives. As we transition from Ordinary Time to Lent, let us relearn the lessons that guide us at any time of the year. The practice of using aphorisms and proverbs to teach a collected wisdom to the world at large did not begin with witty memes and random tweets. This practice was used in wisdom literature, which began thousands of years ago. This weekend we are treated to some wonderful examples. Sirach writes some snappy lines about how what we say reveals our true self. Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ changed the meaning of death. Jesus teaches his disciples lessons that can be applied today to anyone’s life. May we find the wise words we hear today worthy of a retweet or two. Overview of Lent Lent runs from Ash Wednesday, March 2nd this year, up to the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 14th. With the Mass of the Lord’s Supper we begin the three day Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. The readings selected for Lent focus on unpacking key Lenten themes centered on the Paschal Mystery, Christ’s life, Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The six Sundays of Lent, including Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, have a definite structure with each Lectionary cycle highlighting a different aspect of the Paschal Mystery. The Gospel readings for the First and Second Sundays of Lent recount the temptations and the Transfiguration according to Luke. The temptations affirm Jesus’ humanity along with the perennial struggle that he must have experienced during his life and ministry. The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays stress the need for penance and conversion if the Paschal Mystery is ever to become a reality in the lives of disciples. Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion proclaims the Passion according to Luke, in which Jesus, the innocent one, willingly offers himself for others while forgiving his persecutors. We will once again celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the Monday nights of Lent from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the church with two exceptions. During our Lenten Mission from March 21st to March 23rd, we will celebrate Confession during the presentation on Tuesday, March 22nd, so no Confessions on Monday, March 21st. On Monday, April 11th, we will not have Confessions because the priests will be attending the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson. May we all enjoy a blessed and holy Lent! Peace, Fr. Paz, Padre David 6
