INTRO TO THE COTSWOLD WAY HEINEKEN Race to the Tower is a double marathon along the stunning Cotswold Way through quaint traditional villages and medieval burial grounds, finishing at the magnificent Broadway Tower, where you will survey an expanse of a 62 mile radius and as many as 16 counties. Total climbing: 2220 metres of climbing (7284ft) Total route length: 52.3 miles The start of the route is in a field 248 metres above sea level. If any illusions of the route being formed of rolling hills have not been shattered by the journey up to the start line, the view at the 1 mile mark should do the trick! What goes up must come down and up and down and up and down! There is a combination of gentle and sharp steep ascents – The first of the steep ascents begin at the 14 mile point where you will climb unrelentingly up Crickley Hill (268 metres). The highest point is Cleeve hill at 317 metres which thankfully is a more of a gradual climb which is rewarded with spectacular views. The final climb of the race is up to the finish line at Broadway Tower. The climb is a close second in the ‘ascents gallery’, but it will feel like the longest given that you will have covered nearly 50 miles before reaching this point! Starting from the village of Broadway, the tower stands on the summit at 313 metres. The climb is just over 2 miles in length and while the tower can INTRO TO THE COTSWALD WAY be seen from a distance as you approach the village, it drops out of view when the serious climbing starts and only reappears once the last ridge is breached. The route from the start follows a combination of track through ancient forest, footpaths across fields, minor roads through typical postcard Cotswold villages and narrow single track leading to summits where the views are breathtaking! The surface is a mix of earth, grass and exposed rock and roots. Where not exposed, clay soil is the covering. When the weather is dry the trail is easy- going and hard underfoot, however, in wet conditions be prepared for slippery 2 clay surfaces.

These times are in place to ensure as a participant, you get all the support that you need along the route, that you get into the Basecamp in time to eat if you are staying overnight, and to allow Event Control to safely monitor and manage all participants along the route. It is essential that you take note of these timings as if you do not reach a Pit Stop by the cut off time, we reserve the right to remove you from the event for your safety and the safety of other participants. DRINKS Don’t forget your cup... At Threshold we know the stars of our events are the landscapes that we pass through. We also know that these places are under more environmental pressure than ever before and we have a responsibility to protect them for the next generation. That is why we are making a pledge for our Threshold events to be totally free of single use plastic cups and cutlery from 2018 onwards – a small step on the way to reducing our environmental footprint. On the route, you need to have a bottle or a ‘reservoir’ on your back to keep hydrated. Water is available at each pit stop to refill, and we also offer undiluted squash and hot drinks at certain points along the route (along with Flat Coke for the runners). It is up to you what you top up with at the pit stops - some people stick to water, some add squash to their bottles or add their own electrolyte tabs or powders. This year, if you want to take on any of the additional drinks offered at the pit stops, and don’t want to have them in your bottle/ reservoir you will need to bring your own receptacle and carry it between stops. No disposable cups will be provided. If you forget your receptacle, or something happens to it during the event, we will have a limited supply that you will be able to purchase. •W ater and squash will be provided at all Pit Stops for you to refill water bottles or hydration packs. • H ot drinks will be provided at Pit Stops 2,3,4,5,6 and 7 • F lat coke will be provided to runners only at Pit Stops 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 DRINKS 6
