WELCOME FROM THE SLSA PRESIDENT It is with great pleasure I welcome you to the 2018 Coolangatta Gold. Over 800 competitors will be taking part in the ultimate endurance challenges, in what is a record year for Coolangatta Gold. These competitors hail from across Australia, and around the world, each, like you, carries the determination to put their endurance to the test in the ultimate challenge. I would also like to congratulate almost 250 junior athletes taking part in the Youth Challenge. I am looking forward to seeing the skills you have learned as lifesavers in a competitive space as our future generation of Surf Sport athletes. The Coolangatta Gold is renowned as the most gruelling endurance race in surf sport, requiring incredible mental and physical strength to conquer the multi-disciplinary course. I’m excited to welcome back our champions along with an incredible line up of elite athletes in what will surely be a contest for the record books. On behalf of SLSA, I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the success of this event, in particular, our volunteer officials who have worked so hard to make this weekend a success. I look forward to what will be an outstanding weekend of competition and wish all competitors the very best of luck. Graham Ford AM President, Surf Life Saving Australia 3
WELCOME FROM THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND MAJOR EVENTS Welcome to the 18th Coolangatta Gold, held here on the beautiful Gold Coast. Affectionately known as the ‘Cooly Gold’, this event has grown to become one of Australia’s most iconic and challenging surf sporting events. Each year it draws thousands of participants and spectators thanks to the wide range of surf lifesaving disciplines it offers, including surf ski, beach running, ocean swimming and board paddling. The 2018 event will be just as gruelling yet rewarding as past years, and will once again allow competitors to strive for their personal best while taking in some spectacular scenery from Coolangatta through to Broadbeach. The Coolangatta Gold is one of many blockbuster events to feature on the It’s Live! in Queensland calendar following the hugely successful Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support the event via Tourism and Events Queensland. If you’re visiting the Gold Coast I encourage you to explore more of the memorable visitor experiences on offer, including our world-class dining, charming hinterland towns and picturesque national parks. The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events 4
W E L C O M E M E S S AG E F R O M T H E C I T Y O F G O L D C OA S T M AYO R Welcome to this year’s Coolangatta Gold! As Australia’s premier coastal city, the Gold Coast is proud to host the Surf Life Saving movement’s most famous and iconic race. Open to all proficient surf lifesavers, as well as members of the public, the Coolangatta Gold is not only one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports, but it is also one of the most rewarding. Whether it’s the Long or Short Course, or even the Youth Challenge, one thing is for sure – the admirable efforts of this year’s competitors will be some of the best to date. Watching on and seeing the likes of Grant Kenny, Guy Leech, Shannon Eckstein, Ali Day and Elizabeth Pluimers – to name just a few – undertaking the gruelling tests of physical endurance and mental strength is truly inspiring to see. In fact, this event highlights once again the importance of surf safety, a message that we all work hard to convey to both local residents and visitors. The Coolangatta Gold is one of the highlights of the endurance sports calendar with the race making use of an entirely natural environment and giving spectators magnificent views from all beaches and headlands. While you’re enjoying this year’s event, make sure you also take the time to make the most of the rest of what the Gold Coast has to offer. Whether it’s the city’s vibrant mix of shopping, accommodation, theme parks, restaurants or entertainment there is never a shortage of things to do. On behalf of the City, I wish all those who are competing in the Coolangatta Gold a safe and successful competition. Go for gold! Tom Tate Mayor 5
