Cape Cod National Seashore and Outer Cape Towns Join Forces to Promote Ocean Safety Awareness Standard Safety Precautions Be Shark Smart. Currently, there is no single alternative or suite of alternatives that can 100% guarantee the safety of individuals who choose to the enter the water.
that can 100% guarantee the safety of individuals who choose to the enter the water. Look for products developed by the Regional Shark Working Group to increase public awareness and safety, including beach signage, brochures, purple shark flags, the Sharktivity app, and a “shark smart” video. Stay away from seals and schools of fish, as they attract sharks. Use the Sharktivity app to track and report shark sightings Know the location of the emergency call box and Stop the Bleed kits at your beach. Ocean Safety Basics Never turn your back to the ocean. Never swim alone. Swim, kayak, paddle, and surf in groups. Avoid murky and low visibility water. Lifeguards are on duty mid-June through mid-September. Stay close to the shore where rescuers could reach you if needed. Ocean water temperature averages between 60-70 degrees throughout the summer. Be alert for rip currents, shore break, and strong undertows. If caught in a rip current: Remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly. Don't fight the current. Swim out of the current in a direction parallel to the shoreline. When out of the current, swim towards the shore. If you cannot swim out of the current, float or calmly tread water. If you cannot reach the shore, draw attention to yourself - wave your arms & yell for help. If you see someone in trouble - get help from a lifeguard. If there is no lifeguard on duty, call 911. Beach Safety Basics Wear sun protection. Glass containers are not allowed on national seashore beaches. Rafts, rubber tubes, masks, and snorkels are not allowed on lifeguarded beaches. Sand collapses easily. Undercut cliffs can collapse at any time without warning. Deep holes can lead to burial and suffocation. Do not climb slopes and dunes or dig holes deeper than knee level of the smallest person in your group. Cape Cod National Seashore to Host Bike Safety Events on July 30 and August 6 2021 marks the tenth year that Cape Cod National Seashore’s Bike Safety Committee has hosted bike safety events to provide awareness and reduce the occurrence and severity of bike accidents at the national seashore. This year’s “Bike Safety at the Seashore” events are slated for July 30 at Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown and August 6 at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Both events will run from 10 am to noon. "Every year we medevac cyclists with serious head injuries to Boston hospitals,” said Superintendent Brian Carlstrom. “We need to get the word out about how to bike safely on Cape Cod. We're partnering with towns on the Outer Cape to sponsor events that encourage safe practices and teach young people and parents that it’s cool to wear a helmet, and it's the law." Both events are free and open to the public. They feature helmet fittings, fun activities for kids, bicycle safety checks, and educational displays. Prizes for participation, such as helmets and bike accessories may be available while supplies last. Educational topics will include how to fit a helmet properly, preparing for a ride with an ABC bicycle quick check, the consequences of a bicycle crash, and interesting facts about bicycle safety at the seashore. The event also promotes the fitness benefits of bicycling, and there will

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AWSC
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AWSC We look forward to welcoming you to Provincetown in May 2022! Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) Awarded Grant For New Provincetown Center The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s plans to create a new Shark Center in Provincetown received a major funding boost this week. AWSC has been awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism through a new program to support the state’s tourism industry and cultural facilities. The grant is being funded by Destination Development Capital as part of a post-pandemic economic recovery plan. AWSC will receive $77,550 to be used for upgrades and renovations to create a new Shark Center at the nonprofit’s location at 16 MacMillan Wharf in Provincetown. The new center is scheduled to open in May 2022. “We are thrilled to be a recipient of this grant and be recognized as an important educational and cultural destination,” said AWSC CEO and cofounder Cynthia Wigren. “The work we do researching great whites and educating the public is more critical now than ever before. This funding will allow us to improve our facility and expand our impact with Cape visitors and the local community alike.” AWSC is one of 34 tourist destinations across the state that will be the first to benefit from these new DDC Grants in the upcoming year. A total of $2 million in capital grants were announced by the Baker-Polito Administration to provide funding for projects that expand, construct, restore or renovate Massachusetts tourism attractions. Since 2013, AWSC has worked in collaboration with shark science experts, community partners, public and government officials, researchers, donors, friends and followers to augment scientific research, improve factors that affect public safety, and educate both the local and broader community to inspire a greater understanding of white sharks and conservation of the species. AWSC operates a Shark Center in Chatham where visitors can learn more about white sharks.

The works will include the return of festival favorites, Sokeo Ros, with his inspiring fusion of Hip-hop and the legacy of Cambodian dance, and a special return engagement of tap dance artists, Orlando Hernandez. Thanks to a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts, Hernandez will present a world premiere with live music by saxophonist Leland Baker. Critically acclaimed dancer from the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Eran Bugge, will perform a solo choreographed specifically for the Festival and, for the first time, The Provincetown Dance Festival will present Chyrstyn Kentroy and Paulo Arrais from the Boston Ballet, who will present two contemporary ballet works. The Hartford based Scapegoat Garden returns with a new work conceived by the dramatic dance innovator Deborah Goffe, and from Seattle, comes a rising star of the contemporary dance work, Jade Curtis Solomon-Solo Magic. Intense, inspiring and provocative, Curtis Solomon performed at the festival several years ago and was a huge audience favorite. Another audience favorite, the Portland Ballet, returns with a contemporary ballet duet. The Provincetown Dance Festival continues its collaboration with co-producers, Adam Miller and The Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill for over 15 years. Castle Hill’s Executive Artistic Director Cherie Mittenthal states “ After years of hard work and planning, I am so proud and excited to see such a beautiful new performance venue become a part of Castle Hill’s family. Outer Cape audiences can now expect many great performing experiences in an ideal outdoor setting.”

The virtual, multi-platform, live stream opening can be viewed, earlier, from 6:15 to 6:30 pm: https://www.facebook.com/bowersockartgalleryprovincetown Bowersock Gallery will explore the modern still life with a dazzling array of 'takes' on inanimate objects. Subject: insentient bits and bobs, is largely an expression of both hyper and traditional realism where artists reflect upon the standard-bearer flower still, more often than not via arranged objects. Some reference the traditional, while others choose the decidedly contemporary. "The popularity of still life never wanes," Curator and Founder Steve Bowersock says. "If seventeen years in the gallery has taught us anything, it's that 'insentient bits and bobs' please. And literally, 'still life' is just that: still...life...as in a pause. Whether humorous, political, or narrative, these works highlight a beautiful and commanding calm which gives us just the perfect respite time to - breathe. It's not only a display of wonderfully placed objects to be viewed, but as well, for us to stop...look...be soothed...and enjoy"! Featured, are the paintings of Julie Beck, Natalie Featherston, Noriko Fox, Sydney Bella Sparrow, and Brittany Haynes. Subject: insentient bits and bobs also includes David Random's mixed media sculpture, where "found objects" are repurposed, turned on their heads, assembled and transformed into something entirely new - sometimes a recognizable item, other times a creation completely abstract. In addition to the themed center room, the gallery features two other rooms representing Bowersock's scores of talented artists, exhibited salon style. Cape Cod National Seashore Free Concerts!
