We would like to welcome you all to the Melbourne2020 IGLA Championships. We are incredibly proud to join the annual tradition of welcoming our aquatic LGBTIQ friends and allies to compete, meet and share our love of aquatic sports. IGLA represents an almost unbroken line of aquatics meetings since 1987 and we are proud to continue this lineage. At Melbourne2020 we believe that active participation in sport brings with it a benefit to our mental health and wellbeing. By sharing our sporting activity together we also remind ourselves of the diversity of our communities and strength that comes when we come together. The Melbourne2020 committee wish you the best of times here in Melbourne and we encourage you to make the most of this shared experience and we look forward to seeing you all in Utah for IGLA 2021, hosted by the amazing Queer Utah Aquatics Club. MELBOURNE2020 COMMITTEE “After an exciting year hosting IGLA 2019, World Pride and Stonewall 50th, Team New York Aquatics is thrilled to have such a strong presence at Melbourne 2020! We are excited to represent our city and community as we carry on this global tradition. For some, this will mark their 22nd IGLA, while others will be experiencing it for the very first time. Our swimmers, water polo players, and synchronized swimmers are humbled to compete with our fellow proud athletes in this year’s championship. We look forward to this week of competing and connecting around the one thing we all love most: The water.” TEAM NEW YORK AQUATICS 1
On behalf of the Andrews Labor Government, welcome to Victoria – sporting and events capital of Australia and proud host of the Melbourne 2020 International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) Championships. Victoria is home to some of the biggest sporting events in the world. In recent weeks the Australian Open dazzled at Melbourne Park and next month the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix will draw tens of thousands of motorsport fans to Albert Park. Over the next six days, more than 600 competitors from across the world will be out to do their nations proud in swimming, synchronised swimming, diving and water polo. The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre will be the main theatre of competition while Port Phillip Bay will host the open-water swimming, based at Williamstown Life Saving Club. The IGLA Championships are an annual event and once every four years they coincide with the Gay Games, a key feature of the LGBTQI sporting calendar with previous hosts cities including Miami, Edmonton, Stockholm, Vancouver and in 2018, Paris. Here in Victoria, equality is not negotiable. We want to help the LGBTQI community celebrate its diversity and events like this are important in helping to achieve that goal. When you’re not at the championships, I encourage you to seek out some of Melbourne’s many treasures. Whether it be the famous laneways that host some of the world’s best food experiences, our amazing museums and galleries or a bayside adventure, there’s something for everyone in Melbourne. Outside Melbourne lies an array of attractions in regional Victoria. I strongly recommend taking a trip to the regions, especially those areas that have been affected by the summer’s bushfires and which need our support to recover. Wherever you go in Victoria, you’re sure to find something to delight in. Best of luck to all the competitors and to spectators and supporters, I trust that you will have a fantastic time at the Melbourne 2020 IGLA Championships. MELBOURNE SPORTS AND AQUATICS CENTRE MAP 11
Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia and summer in Melbourne is jam-packed with local and international sporting events. Tennis fever hits Melbourne in January with the Australian Open and the City revs up in March for the Australian Formula one Grand Prix. Melbourne2020 IGLA Championships will be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre which is right next to the Grand Prix track! Summer in Melbourne also means cricket season. The MCG and Marvel stadium are routinely packed out for national and international cricket matches. Women's Australian Rules football has recently taken Australia by storm with the AFLW season kicking off through February and March. Melbourne is a foodie and bar-fly's paradise. Literally hundreds of amazing restaurants and bars can be found in and around the city. The best places are always tucked away in a laneway or on a rooftop. Did we mention coffee? Melburnians are known globally as aficionados of a good brew. There is awesome shopping in the Melbourne CBD and along Chapel Street in Prahran and more art galleries than you can pointy a stick at. St Kilda, Melbourne's trendy beachside suburb, is a big tourist hub, so make sure you put that on your list. Melbourne is known for is awesome tram network. You can literally get anywhere on a tram in Melbourne, and in the CBD they're free. They're also a great way to see the city and its surrounds. Download the PTV app for easy journey planning. During summer, Melbourne is a great city to visit and it has been voted for several years consecutively the most liveable city in the world. No joke! It is considered the cultural and sport capital of Australia for its diversity in population, food festivals sport events and green areas. Recognised as a very safe city both during day and night, the tram and train network offers extensive coverage until late night and all night around during the week end. Even if our social events are held around the two main “gay areas” Fitzroy and South Yarra, Melbourne is a very progressive city and a recent vote revealed that 84% of the population voted in favour of gay marriage. Feel free to PDA your friends and loved ones. In Melbourne, there isn’t a unique “place to live” as different areas offer unique lifestyle with lots of pros and little cons. Melbourne 2020 is going to be held at MSAC, in South Melbourne and locations within the 20-30 minutes walking radius are perfect, allowing you to enjoying the city while walking and maybe grabbing a coffee on the way. Apart from South Melbourne, Southbank, Albert Park or Middle Park are areas ideal to find accommodation in. Other areas such as South Yarra, Prahan, Windsor, the CBD and St. Kilda are a little more far out and allow transport time of 20-30 minutes by train, tram, car or horse carriage. 12
MELBOURNE CENTRAL YHA Located in the CBD, and is part of the YHA chain where you can get reduced price if you become a member. It has a no.12 tram stop just few steps away going directly to MSAC, where the tournament is held. Located close to Flinders Street station which allows you a quick access to other trams and trains around the city. MARKET TAVERN HOSTEL This hostel is just 15 minutes’ walk from MSAC or just one block away from the no.12 tram stop, making this hostel the closest to the pool. If you decide to stay at this place, I suggest you to car/uber/taxi for going out and party in the main “gay areas” of Fitzroy or South Yarra. MELBOURNE HOSTEL Located more south than the other 2 suggestions, this hostel is closer to the bay and St. Kilda beach. You can reach MSAC in 25-30 minutes walking through the beautiful Albert Park or conveniently catch the nearby no.96 tram line to MSAC. Other hostels can be found easily using www.hostelworld.com We scored an extra good price for serviced apartments around Melbourne with Quest. Check this link to find out the prices questapartments.com.au We recommend you check the distance from MSAC on goggle maps before booking! COPPERSMITH HOTEL You can’t get better location than this. It’s just 5 minutes’ walk from MSAC. Every other hotel located in South Melbourne will be a great choice as nearby the pool. CROWN HOTEL This high-end luxury hotel is located on the Yarra water front and nearby no.12 tram line although they have their own taxi service. Lush! For other hotels we recommend using www.booking.com or www.trivago.com to compare prices and locations. Shared house accommodations are widely used in Melbourne and you can find your perfect match between location, price and a week end crush. 13
Melbourne is a fantastic city for getting around, yet it is still not perfect. Once you get to the Tullamarine airport you have the option of getting a cab/uber for a price of ~$50AUD to the city or catch the Skybus for $19.75AUD ($36.50AUD return). This service is 24/7 and buses are very frequent from Tullamarine to Southern Cross Station, in the CBD of Melbourne. Once at Southern Cross you can choose to hop on a tram/ train or get a cab to your hotel. Melbourne has one of the biggest tram network in the world that can bring you pretty much everywhere, with the appropriate amount of time, within the metro area. If you are lucky enough, you can enjoy your ride with some characteristic and very passionate tram drivers that will entertain you with songs, jokes or a touristic tour. To get on the tram, train or bus, you need to have a Myki transport Card with pre-loaded currency. Although a great point of discussion, you cannot purchase or recharge Myki cards on public transport but all 7/11 shops, train stations and some tram stops have the ability to do so with cash or card. While a single 2hours ride on any transport costs $4.40AUD, the daily pass is $8.80AUD and a weekly pass is $44AUD. Recently Myki is also available through Android phones NFC payment system (sorry Apple!) and you can pre-arrange payments and card online www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/mobile-myki/ Tickets inspectors are savage and merciless on public transport. Be sure you touch on every time you hop on a tram or train… though you do need to touch off at train stations. Be sure you have the PTV app and Tram Tracker app on your smart phone while in Melbourne. PTV app can calculate accurately your itinerary from A to B with public transport. Although tram frequency can vary at different times of the day, Tram Tracker instead can tell you when the next upcoming trams are expected. If public transports aren’t your thing, the most popular share driving apps are Uber, Didi or Ola. If you feel nostalgic, you can also hail to the taxis passing by but you might have to wait a while. For this reason, the local network of taxi has an app as well 13CABS and organise trips in advance. 14
If you wish to purchases a local mobile plan to save on mobile data and calls, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are the biggest providers each with a solution for your needs. You can find stores on Bourke Street in the CBD. 15
