Graham asked members to stand for a moments silence to remember Barry and his contribution to Orchids (please see our Vale in Orchid News written by Phil Spence and Chris Dalrymple) Visitors - We welcome Dennys Angove, President of Kur ring gai O/S (and his wife Jannine) who will educate us a little later on the Orchids of Iceland. Apologies – Chris Dalrymple, Peter Anderson, John and Marie Bartlett, Jan Robinson, Cary Polis, Graeme and Craig Scott-Harden, John Allen, Phyl Murn, Warleiti Jap. Confirmation of Minutes The minutes of the meeting held on 28th October 2019 were confirmed as a true account of that meeting. Moved for acceptance by Veronica Clowes and seconded by Bernadette Williams - accepted unanimously. Matters Arising Shortage of Committee members - Again raising the issue of our shortage of committee members; and urging those present to think about donating a little of their time. Discontinuance of Poly cups – A reminder that at the October meeting we announced the discontinuance of poly cups at our meetings from January 2020…..SO Tonight we have free reusable cups for our members. Please collect from Toni and have your name crossed off our list. Don’t break it because we can’t replace it if you do. General Business Insurance renewal time: Graham reminded those present that it’s time for societies who take Public Liability insurance from OSNSW to organize whoever is responsible for providing society numbers to Veronica, and preparing for payment when requested. Supper changes: To bring us in line with other societies, we now encourage members to bring along a plate of something yummy to share for supper. From next meeting in February we will provide Tea and coffee and cool drinks and our members will bring the eats. Recent Fires in NSW: Many different funds are available for people to contribute to bushfire victims, and people have probably already been generous, however we are now becoming aware of a number of orchid growers in our Orchid Societies across the State that have been seriously affected. Rod Thomas, President Milton Ulladulla OS lost everything. Gary Hodder loss 24 of his 36 Award winning Limousin cattle (a lifetime's work) and said he will be ~$100,000 out of pocket after his insurance pays up. I am aware that many societies are taking up collections for the fire victims and I encourage members to do what they can in respect of the various fund raising opportunities RAS Easter Show – 3rd April to 14th April 2020: The OSNSW will this year operate an information cart at the show. This cart is designed to promote orchid growing generally and to help and encourage interested members of the public by providing advice and information about localities of orchid societies and their meeting times etc. The Orchid cart will be manned for the 2 orchid sessions 7th and 8th April and 13th and 14th April 2020. On these 2 days we will need 6 volunteers for each day…8am – 12 noon, 12 noon to 4pm, 4pm to 8pm or when pavilion closes. I would encourage those members who intend to exhibit to consider filling the afternoon shift roster positions when they are required to collect their plants after pavilion closes on that day. In turn, Judges and Stewards on duty at each of these orchid sessions will fill roster vacancies for morning sessions. Veronica has a roster up here at the table and is seeking volunteers to fill positions on ‘the cart’ Orchids Out West - 15th to 17th May 2020. Orchid News February 2020 Vale Barry Collins Words by Chris Dailrymple and Phil Spence Photos By Noelene Collins, Bill Dobson and Phil and Yvonne Spence Kevin Barry Collins OAM. Known to all as Barry, 15 May 1934 – 11 January 2020. He went to school and college at Newington Boys’ College Stanmore. Barry remained very active with Newington until he became unwell. He was a footballer and played Rugby Union for Newington in his early years. Noelene and Elva, Barry’s sisters, and his mother and father became deeply involved with the war home effort, hosting many outings and functions for the troops on leave in Australia that also included fund raising for food packs and other items for the Prisoners of War. Noelene and Barry became also involved with The Royal Australian Horticultural Society becoming judges. Barry judged at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for 37 years. Noelene and Barry became legends in the tennis world and united many players of the eastern suburbs making them a strong force. His involvement with basketball is again a legend story as he was one of the key persons to unite the game and take it to where it has gone today. He was also deeply involved with Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. If that was not enough; Barry became a major worker with the Coogee Diggers RSL club. He was also a Justice of Peace and served in this public role for many years. As you can see, Barry was involved with so many different fields and lived his life to the fullest, but he was not just a member but a hard working member. Barry’s love of orchids started early and took him all over the world. Within the eastern suburbs club, he was a stalwart who kept it going in the lean years and he did turn this club around to an active and vibrant group. He was on the executive and president of this club for many years. Barry went on to become president of the Orchid Society of NSW. He was a foundation member of the Australian Native Orchid Society and served on ANOS council for many years. He also was President of the Warringah ANOS group. The achievement of which he was notably proud was the establishment of the Mingara Orchid club to which he gave great support and guidance. Without Barry this club would not exist today, he was the inaugural president and filled that role for many years. This club has become one of the most successful clubs in Australia, holding a major show annually as well as its many regular events. He was at every event, helping wherever needed and always more than willing to share his deep knowledge and passion of his love of orchids. He encouraged the new growers at all the clubs that he attended their meetings and offered sound guidance if you ever had a problem he would steer you in the right direction. At all of these clubs he was a steward at their public exhibitions and shows. He represented Australia at many World Orchid Conferences and participated in setting up displays for Australia. In his early years he benched many orchids and won the yearly point score, notably at OSNSW. In 1968 he was on the committee for the World Orchid Conference held in the Domain Sydney, one of the most successful events ever held in Australia. Barry was awarded many honours including OAM. With Barry’s passion for orchids and his propensity for work, he was honoured with life membership of OSNSW, ESOS, Warringah ANOS and Mingara OS. Barry’s love of plants extended past orchids; he was heavily involved with the world of orchid stamps and orchid club badges and had one of the largest collections of badges in Australia. Barry had a special gift of taking a club or an organization to another level. He has left this world a better place. Barry remained active even throughout his illness, often driving long distances to attend meetings, talking to and encouraging members and embracing new endeavours for the clubs. He has been a great friend to many, including us, and he will be truly missed. And he was an excellent Santa Claus. 5
