Issues of the world, meet your match. Gold Award Spotlight Mia S. created a self-care/suicide prevention club at her high school and coordinated an “Out of the Darkness” suicide awareness 5k walk. Her mission was to bring awareness to suicide prevention and facilitate authentic conversations around mental health. Her team also created a mental health resource guide specifically for people in the Portland metropolitan area to find local, national and online resources. The guide also contained specific resources for Black, Indigenous, and people of color and LGBTQ+ folks. Mia was awarded the 2021 Luella and George Shaver Family Scholarship—a local award just for Gold Award Girl Scouts—for $5,000! Silver Award Spotlight Silver Award Girl Scouts Keira and Ava of Troop 12811 noticed a local senior center’s library had suffered water damage and that the library had lost all but a handful of books. The girls felt that it was important for seniors to have access to books onsite—especially during the COVID pandemic. With the community’s help, they rebuilt the library with bookcases and desks, and supplied more than 1,700 books in like-new condition. They also plan to gather with the residents there once it’s safe. Bronze Award Spotlight Troop 40343—Aditi, Tara, Zoe, Chloe, Magnolia, Natalie, Nicole, Sunny, Kate, Shivani, April and Sofia— noticed that there was a need for more signage at dangerous parts of a road where kids often crossed. They petitioned the City of Lake Oswego and the City of Portland to install crosswalk and pedestrian signs, an amazing safety solution!
