Kia Ora
Welcome to Waiopehu College!
We are excited to present our future-focused curriculum brochure for 2021, which will give you and other
students in Years 9 and 10 more choice in the courses that you study during your first two years at college.
This planner is for you and your family to read and discuss. We are sure you will find plenty of exciting new
courses to choose from. Please take some time to study it carefully and then follow the step by step
instructions so that we can start putting your personalised timetable together.
In this planner we will learn a bit about you, your interests, talents and passions as well as those areas you
might want to develop further. Every one of our courses contains the key skills and knowledge that you will
need to flourish in the junior school so that you are prepared for success in NCEA and your future. For those
students working at high academic levels, our courses are designed to enable you to tackle NCEA
assessments early if appropriate.

Our Goal
Our goal is to nurture
and grow you through a
curriculum that inspires
and engages, to make
sure you leave college
empowered to make a
difference personally,
socially and in your
chosen future pathways.

Junior course structure
Look above to the ‘Inspire’ arrow, our courses are grouped in to these three main strands:

Community and Society These courses will help you learn more about our local community or
New Zealand as a whole, or will develop skills to help you grow into a
                                      more confident, active citizen.

Critical Thinking These courses will challenge you to use all sorts of information to form
opinions, judgments, conclusions, and so on. You will learn how to think
                                      in different ways.

Creativity and Innovation These courses will give you opportunities to develop your problem-
solving skills or express your creativity in a whole range of different
                                      ways.

There are courses from each of the following learning areas that make up the New Zealand Curriculum:

The year is divided into two semesters which are about 18 weeks long. You will study five courses in each
semester. That’s ten courses each year - a total of twenty different courses in the junior school!
It is important that you gain skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare for NCEA. To
achieve this, you will have a personal meeting with one of our leadership team to ensure your course
selections are best for you.

Your timetable – Electives and more

Everyone will study Hauora, Literacy and Numeracy, and a range of Modules which will be compulsory for all.
In addition, you will be able to choose from a wide range of Electives with which you will begin four mornings
each week. These will be presented to you in a separate booklet which will circulated by 23 October 2020
with full details of the selection process.
Every junior student will study a Module subject once a week. Topics include Health, Taha Māori, Careers,
Active Movement, Nutrition and Financial Literacy.

How do I choose my courses?
There are many courses to choose from.
To help you find what’s best for you, follow these steps.

Step 1 Read the course list
Read through all the course descriptions. This will take a while! You could do it with a friend or someone in
your whānau. Use a ‘traffic light system’ to narrow down your courses - write in the columns below with the
course title or code.

GREEN = Courses you would absolutely love to do
ORANGE = Courses that you might like to do
RED = Courses you don’t want to do

                GREEN ORANGE RED

Step 2 Shortlist your courses
Once this is done, sort your green and orange courses into the ‘SHORTLIST’ table below. This will help you
make sure that you have a broad variety across the learning areas. As a general rule of thumb, you should try
and select at least two courses from each learning area. Please put one code in each box.

Step 3 Final course selection
Name:
Making sure you have a balance of learning areas, write your first 10 choices into the table below. Just write
the course code - it’s in capital letters next to the course name.
You need to ensure you study a broad range of courses from a variety of learning areas as it is important to
gain the necessary skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare yourself for NCEA.
Once you have chosen your top 10, please choose three more in order of priority (numbers 11-13) that could
be backups. These may be needed if some courses clash, or if your chosen course has only a few students
taking it, which may lead us to not being able to provide a teacher.
The first row is an example to show you!
