Kia Ora Welcome to Waiopehu College! We are excited to present our future-focused curriculum brochure for 2021, which will give you and other students in Years 9 and 10 more choice in the courses that you study during your first two years at college. This planner is for you and your family to read and discuss. We are sure you will find plenty of exciting new courses to choose from. Please take some time to study it carefully and then follow the step by step instructions so that we can start putting your personalised timetable together. In this planner we will learn a bit about you, your interests, talents and passions as well as those areas you might want to develop further. Every one of our courses contains the key skills and knowledge that you will need to flourish in the junior school so that you are prepared for success in NCEA and your future. For those students working at high academic levels, our courses are designed to enable you to tackle NCEA assessments early if appropriate. Our Goal Our goal is to nurture and grow you through a curriculum that inspires and engages, to make sure you leave college empowered to make a difference personally, socially and in your chosen future pathways. Junior course structure Look above to the ‘Inspire’ arrow, our courses are grouped in to these three main strands: Community and Society These courses will help you learn more about our local community or New Zealand as a whole, or will develop skills to help you grow into a more confident, active citizen. Critical Thinking These courses will challenge you to use all sorts of information to form opinions, judgments, conclusions, and so on. You will learn how to think in different ways. Creativity and Innovation These courses will give you opportunities to develop your problem- solving skills or express your creativity in a whole range of different ways. Your timetable - Courses Your courses are highlighted in the purple blocks. The year is divided into two semesters which are about 18 weeks long. You will study five courses in each semester. That’s ten courses each year - a total of twenty different courses in the junior school! It is important that you gain skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare for NCEA. To achieve this, you will have a personal meeting with one of our leadership team to ensure your course selections are best for you. Your timetable – Electives and more Everyone will study Hauora, Literacy and Numeracy, and a range of Modules which will be compulsory for all. In addition, you will be able to choose from a wide range of Electives with which you will begin four mornings each week. These will be presented to you in a separate booklet which will circulated by 23 October 2020 with full details of the selection process. Every junior student will study a Module subject once a week. How do I choose my courses? There are many courses to choose from. To help you find what’s best for you, follow these steps. Step 1 Read the course list Read through all the course descriptions. This will take a while! You could do it with a friend or someone in your whānau. Use a ‘traffic light system’ to narrow down your courses - write in the columns below with the course title or code. Step 2 Shortlist your courses Once this is done, sort your green and orange courses into the ‘SHORTLIST’ table below. This will help you make sure that you have a broad variety across the learning areas. As a general rule of thumb, you should try and select at least two courses from each learning area. Step 3 Final course selection Name: Making sure you have a balance of learning areas, write your first 10 choices into the table below. Just write the course code - it’s in capital letters next to the course name. You need to ensure you study a broad range of courses from a variety of learning areas as it is important to gain the necessary skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare yourself for NCEA. Once you have chosen your top 10, please choose three more in order of priority (numbers 11-13) that could be backups. These may be needed if some courses clash, or if your chosen course has only a few students taking it, which may lead us to not being able to provide a teacher. The Arts Courses A Rebel With a Cause (Graffiti/Art Painting) - REBELART Learning Area: The Arts – Visual Art Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course From paintings on cave walls to marks left by ancient Greeks, we begin to look at Graffiti Description Art through the ages. New York city, the big Apple, this is where Graffiti Art boomed. Take a look at the different art styles of Banksy, Keith Haring, and Jean Dubuffet. Be inspired by the Hip Hop culture of New York. Find your voice through the political protests of this time; Picasso and World War II, the Black Panther Party, Human Rights, and present practice Graffiti Art/Protest Art - what do you want to say? Follow Description your own passions and interests. Look at places, people and taonga (precious things) that are important to you and have shaped your identity. You will develop research skills and practical skills in Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Printmaking. Art Beat is designed to be as inclusive as possible for all students. (For all levels of experience - beginners to advanced) Art Work of Oceania (Painting/Printmaking/Sculpture) - OCEANART Learning Area: The Arts – Visual Art Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course Voyage the Pacific; through the Islands of Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Kiribati, and more. Description Journey with artists such as Fatu Feu’u, John Pule, Lisa Reihana, and Michael Tuffery to create amazing art works. We will step back in time and look at artifacts such as coins and beads for trading, precious tapa cloth, and ceremonial head pieces. How does art influence society, or how do different cultures influence art? On the shores of Aotearoa, New Zealand we will create Kowhaiwhai (Māori patterns), and weave harakeke (flax). Electronic Art (Design/Sculpture) - ELECART Learning Area: The Arts – Visual Art Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course Come and explore the FUTURE of Art! - This class works with a range of electronic Description equipment including LEDs, electronic paint, motors, micro bits, scratch and arduinos to create multi-dimensional ART works! Lessons include information on art-history, art-making, design principles, electrical engineering and computer programming. The course ends with a student inquiry - where students propose a final piece of electronic artwork they would like to create. This course offers a lot of fun and five junior badges. (Caters for all levels of experience - beginners to advanced) The Lightbox (Design/Photography/Animation) - LIGHTBOX Learning Area: The Arts – Visual Art Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course Do you want to learn to take photographs and edit them in Photoshop like a pro? Create Description your own amazing animations using AfterEffects. Design your own calendar, book and so much more using Adobe Illustrator! (For all levels of experience - beginners to advanced) The Science of Art (Photography/Painting/Sculpture/Printmaking) - SCIART Learning Area: The Arts – Visual Art Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course Let’s explore the relationship between Art and Science! In this class we’ll be digging below Description the surface of creativity to explore the make-up of artistic materials, how our eyes work and how our brains interpret pattern, colour, shape, light etc. Lessons will include how to create our own paint, glue, paper, natural dyes, clay and other chemical reactions. We will also be engaging in experiments to discover why art causes such strong emotions. Each week you will have a lesson on your chosen instrument with a specialist music teacher. You will also learn the basic skills of music including theory, aural and composition using GarageBand. Advanced Junior Music - ADVMUSIC Learning Area: The Arts – Performing Arts Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course This course is focuses on learning, practising and performing music on a chosen Description instrument. Selecting this course means that you can already play an instrument. Each week you will have a lesson on your chosen instrument with a specialist music teacher. You will also be expected to perform in groups throughout the course. Other elements of the course will involve: developing confidence for the stage, practice techniques, composition, research and some elements of music theory and aural. Depending on your skill level NCEA Level 1 credits are available. Monumental Momentum - MONMOM Learning Area: The Arts – Performing Arts Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course You will learn the fundamental skills of hip hop dancing and create hip hop sets of your Description own. You will also have the opportunity to test out your skills in a practical hip hop dance exam. You will have the opportunity to work with the junior and senior hip hop crews to create dance sets that can be taken to competition and performed publicly at events. Course Description Term 1 - Begin learning Hip Hop exercises from the Dance NZ Made Hip Hop syllabus. - Gain an understanding of the origins of the Hip Hop movement. - Begin to explore your ability to create dance and choreograph Hip Hop dances. Term 2 - Polish our performances of the Dance NZ Made Hip Hop exercises ready for assessment. - Present a research project showing your understanding of the origins of Hip Hop Dance. - Choreograph a dance to perform in the end of Term 2 Dance presentation show. Junior Musical Theatre - JUNTHEA Learning Area: The Arts – Performing Arts Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course This course will introduce you to all aspects of Musical Theatre. You will learn and develop Description skills in stage acting, group singing and group dance. You also will have the opportunity to gain experience in a lead role too, if you wish. Contemporary Dance - CONDANCE Learning Area: The Arts – Performing Arts Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course You will learn the fundamental skills of contemporary dancing and create contemporary Description dances of your own. You will also have the opportunity to test out your skills in a practical contemporary dance exam. You will have the opportunity to work with the Junior and Senior contemporary dance group to create dances that can be taken to competition and performed publicly at events. Course Description Term 1 - Begin learning Contemporary exercises from the Dance NZ Made Contemporary syllabus. - Gain an understanding of the origins of Contemporary Dance. - Begin to explore your ability to create dance and choreograph dances. Term 2 - Polish our performances of the Dance NZ Made Contemporary exercises ready for assessment. - Present a research project showing your understanding of the origins of Contemporary Dance. - Choreograph a dance to perform in the end of Term 2 Dance presentation show. aDvANCE - ADVDANCE Learning Area: The Arts – Performing Arts Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course aDvANCE will allow those dancers who already have a strong dance background push their Description understanding of dance further. In aDvANCE dancers will begin to expand their repertoire of dance styles and genres and strengthen their understanding of the dance elements and choreographic devices to help them clearly communicate their ideas through their choreography. Within aDvANCE we will also have the opportunity to participate in and complete NCEA Level 1 dance assessments. Course Description Term 1 - Strengthen understanding of commercial dance styles and technique and begin expanding our understanding of various dance styles and their influence on commercial dance. - Gain an understanding of the origins of various dance styles. - Begin to strengthen your ability to create dance and choreograph dance performances. Term 2 - Polish our performances of various dance styles ready for assessment. - Present a research project showing your understanding of the origins of a selected dance style. - Choreograph a dance to perform at the end of Term 2 Dance presentation show. English Courses A New Take - NEWTAKE Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course In this English course we will explore traditional myths, legends and fairy tales. Through this Description we will examine the messages that these convey, question how relevant these are to our world today and how we can expose new audiences to the cultural relevance of our traditional tales. You will apply this to creating your own modern adaptation for a new generation. This will be done through creating their own film concept and script. You may apply this to the production of a trailer for a planned ‘film’ of your own as an extension of your learning. Extension learning may also extend to comparing traditional Classic tales, like Shakespeare's plays, to their modern adaptations. It's a Mad World - MADWORLD Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course In this English course, you will explore the development of and motivations behind the Description actions of ‘bad guys’ in a range of texts, and why texts have ‘bad guys’ (what purpose they serve). This will include an investigation into these characters - firstly looking at ones that we are more familiar with from texts we have encountered before through to challenging you to explore the stereotypes of ‘bad guys’, and also looking at some of the most famous bad guy characters. You will apply this to ultimately create your own villain and place them in a narrative. You may also apply this through exploring the villains in Classic Literature, such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Bronte, as an extension of your learning. Life’s a Game - LIFEGAME Learning Area: English Strand: Community and Society Course In this English course, you will explore different types of games and look at the meaning Description and purpose of their creation. You will apply this to looking at why creators choose to use certain techniques and how they work together. You will also look at how teenagers as an audience respond to the texts. A range of games will be explored. You may apply this learning through contacting New Zealand game developers to explore the real life opportunities of game design and production as an extension of your learning. This extension may also include game play to explore the concepts you are learning about. Lights, Camera, Action - LICAMACT Learning Area: English Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course In this English course, students will learn the skills to become NZ’s next award winning Description director. You will firstly unpack how different visual texts (short films, feature films & TV shows) are created, the techniques directors use and how they manipulate us through these. You will also learn effective narrative structure and how to storyboard. You may apply this to the production of a trailer for a planned ‘film’ of your own as an extension of your learning. More Than Words - MOREWORD Learning Area: English Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course In this English course, we will explore the power of creative writing as an expression of Description identity and ideas. This will start by seeking inspiration from established and emerging writers. You will then apply this to your own writing. This could involve accompanying artwork to support your words. By the end of the course, students will have their own collection of works. You may apply this through the entry into National Writing competitions as an extension of your learning. On a High Note - HIGHNOTE Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course In this English course, you will explore the power of music and the way in which lyrics are Description created. You will apply this to understanding how music impacts lives from a cultural/societal perspective (e.g. songs that tell a political story e.g. Parihaka by Tim Finn and Herbs). You will also apply your learning to the development of your own song lyrics. You may apply this to entering National Song Lyric competitions and/or recording your lyrics as an extension of your learning. Sell it to Me - SELLTOME Learning Area: English Strand: Creativity and Innovation Course In this English course, you will explore the world of marketing and the creation of products Description for sale. We will go on to look at teenagers as the target audience to design a product for. After completing market research, you will complete a design which may include the making of a replica, or drawings and explanations of the finished product. You will then produce their own marketing campaign, which may include packaging, point of sale advertising, posters, television and online advertisements. You may also apply this to ‘pitch’ your product in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ or 'Shark Tank' situation as an extension of your learning. Survival of the Fittest - SURVFIT Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course In this English course, you will explore what it will take to survive and adapt when the world Description that they live in suddenly changes because of a catastrophic event. This could include apocalyptic events such as environmental or man-made disasters, a pandemic, a zombie plague. You will explore a range of apocalyptic / post -apocalyptic literature . You will study and analyse films, short written texts and a novel, and will develop your thinking and writing skills. You will collaborate with other students to develop a script, storyboard and film trailer/short film. You may also apply this through collaborating with other students on an inquiry into possible end of world scenarios and present your findings on possible plausible scenarios of what could end the world and how could people survive this, as an extension of your learning. The Meaning of Life - MEANLIFE Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course In this English course, you will explore the idea of identity - who you are, and why you are Description that way. You will learn how your identity is based on shared ‘identity stories’ that have been around for hundreds or thousands of years. You will learn some universal stories that we all believe in without even realising it - and learn how they make us who we are. These include 'the circle of life', the story of money, and right vs wrong. You will reflect on how these stories actually influence what you think and believe - your values. Finally, we will look at the relationship between identity stories and how they affect our happiness. You will apply this to images and writing about your own identity, to figure out who you actually are! You may also apply this through being challenged with reading more complex texts as an extension of your learning. Junior ESOL - JUNESOL Learning Area: English Strand: Critical Thinking Course This course is for students who are speakers of other languages. It will support you with Description your other subjects, through learning in the ESOL classroom and/or in having support within your other classes. By doing this you will learn the English language skills that will help you work independently and prepare you for the senior school. Language Courses Let’s go to Japan! - LETGOJAP Learning Area: Languages - Japanese Strand: Community and Society Course "Let’s go to Japan!" is a course that prepares students for a three week trip to Japan. The Description course concentrates on giving the students the ability to comfortably navigate themselves around Japan; shopping, ordering their own food, using public transport and so on. The course will also allow students to communicate with their Japanese host family in a meaningful way. Integrated into the course will be teaching around Japanese culture to allow them to begin to understand the mindset of Japanese people and their society. No previous language experience necessary - just the desire to be exposed to a vibrant and exciting culture! The focus is on learning through fun. The course uses games and interactive activities like taiko drumming, drawing anime and dance to promote the understanding of all things Japanese. There is also a focus on independent self-motivated learning through interactive computer programmes. Let’s go to Japan 2! – LEGOJAP2 Learning Area: Languages - Japanese Strand: Community and Society Course This course further develops the learning that was started in Year 9. The course focuses on Description the language skills that enable students to communicate in Japan with their host family as well as to confidently navigate their way while in Japan; eating, sight-seeing and using public transport. In addition the course gives them the language skills to confidently undertake the Level 1 NCEA examination in 2021.
