Dear Friends, Today is a special day because of a special man. Mike Clegg touched so many lives with his love of life, devotion to family and friends, and of course…his passion for the Ronald McDonald House. Mike’s passion, and now his legacy, was born out of a challenging time in 1977 when his young son, Scotty, was battling leukemia. It was a time when this special man was quoted as saying “No family should go through this.” Scotty eventually beat leukemia, but Mike knew there were still plenty of families battling similar life- changing challenges. If he couldn’t spare them from going through it, he was going to do all he could to ease their burden on the journey. Think back to when you first met Mike Clegg. How long did it take for him to start talking about the House and the Pro-Am? Likely not long. Mike was never one to hold back and when it came to the House and the Pro-Am he did so with great conviction, no holds barred. From the first Pro-Am in 1980, Mike Clegg was front and center. He strove to make each event better than the last, and to let every Ronald McDonald House family know that they had a community to support them…they are not alone. As dark as the experience of Scotty’s leukemia was, Mike was the first to acknowledge that it fundamentally changed him. He discovered that living a fulfilled life comes from helping others along the way and growing deep relationships through sharing his passion. For the first 25 years, Mike chaired this Pro-Am. He refined his vision for it and remained involved up to his passing, earlier this year. He provided his candid feedback along the way, as only Mike could, and knew that if passion for the House was shared by many, the event would continue to flourish long into the future. Mike Clegg prepared us well. This is an exceptional day on the Northeastern Ohio golf calendar. It has been designed for you, Pros & CEOs alike, by a man with passion for the things that matter most. Please know that your participation today matters immensely to the families served by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio. The families, like Mike’s so long ago, are being helped along the path that no one should go through. Today we play for these families and extend our heartfelt thanks to all involved for ensuring Mike’s dream continues. We are grateful to our group of Professionals for joining us again this year and we share our excitement and congratulations with Dicky and Jason, in particular. Their victories in recent weeks would have brought enormous pride and joy to our Founder, as they do to us all. We can’t help but smile at the thought of Mike looking down on us today as we continue to carry out his vision and passion. On behalf of the 2021 Pro-Am Committee, play well and enjoy this day. C. Since meeting Mike, I have always looked up to him - not just because he was about a foot taller than I, but because he was truly a giant among men...He had a special place in his heart for children enduring life-threatening illnesses and for their families; he championed their causes and recruited many to follow his example. We who are part of the Ronald McDonald House family will remember him as an indomitable force for good and a visionary to whom many of our organizational successes, including Pro-Am and Red Treehouse, can be attributed.” Ron Kahn and Mike Clegg at the 2004 Tools for Today and Tomorrow Conference, which later evolved into the – Ron Kahn Red Treehouse program and website.
