Term 3 Week 8 - Tuesday, 31st August 2021 Issue 25 Prep Bluey Excursion – Columboola Outdoor Education Centre Last week our Prep students had the chance to go to Columboola EEC and hunt for Bluey the blue tongue lizard. For many of us this was our first ride on a big bus which was very exciting. When we arrived at Columboola we were greeted by Robyn who began our fun filled adventure. We began by having a discussion about the environment and all of the animals we would find in the Columboola environment. After this we went to find Bluey, but when we got to the enclosure we discovered that he was missing! We came up with lots of different ways to find Bluey, then our adventure really started! As we began to look all around Columboola for Bluey we participated in different activities where we used our senses. We got to use our sense of smell, sight, hearing and feeling. As the day grew closer to a finish we were getting very worried that we hadn’t found Bluey until we decided to look in the very last spot for him. To all of our delight another Columboola teacher had found him. We were all very excited that we had found Bluey and just in time for a quick pat before boarding the bus back to school. We really enjoyed our visit to Columboola and we can’t wait to go back. Book Week Last week we celebrated Book Week. The theme for this year was ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. It was amazing to see both the students and staff engage in this exciting event with a focus on reading! Well done to all who participated. A very special thank you also to Chinchilla State High School staff and students for taking the time to visit and read to many of our students throughout Book Week. Your efforts were greatly appreciated. 2
From the Principal Thank you to all students and staff who made the effort to dress up for this year’s book week parade, as always, the number of students and the quality of costumes was amazing. In honour of the late Eric Carle, who passed away in May this year, our parade was led by a very large and Very Hungry Caterpillar – thank you to Ms White, Mr Dixon and Mr Kerr who joined me in making this costume a memorable one. Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week This week we celebrate our special Teacher Aides and thank them for all that they do. This is an opportunity for students to acknowledge our teacher aides and say thanks for the significant work they do in our classrooms every day. A simple “thank you”, card or offer to help is one-way students can do this. Student Resource Scheme (SRS) Approved for 2022 At the last P&C meeting a discussion was held around the implementation of the SRS this year including positives, negatives, inclusions, exclusions and costs. Over 92% of families participating in the scheme have paid in full and I thank you for meeting this obligation. A reminder that all outstanding payments for this year’s SRS are now overdue. The P&C voted overwhelmingly in favour of continuing the SRS into 2022. The total cost of the SRS in 2022 will be very similar to costs this year and those parents not participating in the scheme will be able to pay a levy for the Arts/Craft instead of providing these items. The details of the scheme will be provided shortly with a list of inclusions (books, stationery etc.) and exclusions (swimming, RI, performances, camps etc.). No School this Friday A reminder that this Friday, 3rd September, is a designated Staff Professional Development Day. This means that there is NO school for students. 2022 Leadership Nominations This week I handed out nomination forms for our 2022 Student Leadership process. Any Year 5 wishing to be a School, House or Music captain next year need to return the forms to the office by Friday, 10th September (next week). Successful nominees will be notified on Friday, 17th September (last day of Term 3) and speeches will occur in Term 4. Further details are contained on the nomination forms. Wellbeing Week Last week was Wellbeing Week. Week 7 of each term is our chance to promote wellbeing strategies to our staff, students and wider community. This term’s focus was on student’s toolbox strategies and healthy eating habits. Staff and students participated in a variety of activities on at lunch breaks for students to get involved in. Zones of Regulation Day At Chinchilla State School we take care of our emotional wellbeing by using the Zones of Regulation to help us. This means we learn about our feelings and use positive strategies to help us cope when we are feeling sad, nervous or angry. There are four Zones that teach us about our feelings. The Blue Zone is a rest area when we are feeling ‘blue’ or ‘down’. The Yellow Zone is a ‘slow down’ zone because we might be feeling over excited and nervous. The Red Zone is a ‘stop zone’ when we need a break because we are too upset to think clearly. The Green Zone is a ‘go zone’ ready to learn, play and get on with things. In week 6 Staff dressed up in Zones colours to promote this important skill. 4
Curriculum Corner with 6B Poetry in 6B This term in English 6B, like a swarm of bees charging toward a garden of flowers, have embraced their poetic side. We have explored figurative language, a variety of poetic devices and poetry forms. We have begun to use our understanding of poetic techniques to analyse poems and identify their mood and message. We are also in the process of developing a poetry anthology which we hope to share with various classes around the school. What are our poems about, you ask? DISASTERS! DISASTERS OF EVERY KIND! – from volcanic eruptions, Cyclones, and fires to COVID 19, car crashes and even missing the bus. Our English and Science units have been integrated. We learn about natural disasters in Science and practise our understanding by using our learned vocabulary in English! VOCABULARY! Another huge focus in 6B. We have come to understand that our choice of vocabulary can greatly influence our readers thoughts and emotions, so have endeavoured to use precise vocabulary to enhance our imagery within our poetry. Have a look at some of the wonderful work we have been producing! 5
PBL Update This week’s value lesson is: Responsibility – Be a Problem Solver. Chinchilla State School is committed to providing a safe, supportive and respectful learning environment for students and staff, where students learn. Each day, students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing. This week’s Value lesson teaches students to successfully be a problem solver. The capacity for effective problem solving is critical for resiliency. The capacity to deal effectively with adversity depends on a person having access to a range of flexible strategies for addressing conflict, seeking help, and dealing with unforeseen setbacks. The following steps are a useful guide to teaching your child about problem solving. Encourage your child to take part so that they can slowly learn to do it for themselves. Remember, it is best to begin when your child is feeling calm and relaxed. Start with an issue where you know they are likely to experience some success. If your child is very anxious or angry, help them to calm down first (e.g. having some quiet time, taking some deep breaths) or leave problem solving for another day or another issue when you know your child is ready to participate. Problem Solving Process: 1. Identify the problem 2. Generate solutions 3. Evaluate the possible solutions, decide on the best course of action, and put it into action 4. Evaluate the outcome. If the problem is not solved, repeat from step 2. Chinchilla State School’s P&C Association supports the PBL program in the school. Above photo - is this Week’s Value Champions 6
