29th July 2021 Principal’s Report Welcome back everyone! After yet another challenging lockdown it is so great to have children back at school from yesterday. They were clearly missing their friends and teachers and it was fantastic to see the smiles on their faces and how they re-engaged with their peers. We really do appreciate your support, understanding and patience throughout all transitioning periods, not just this latest lockdown. The sad reality is this last lockdown may not be the last we see before the year is out. Whatever transpires, please be assured that we will continue to do everything within our means to support our students’ learning and wellbeing, and to support our community. We always evaluate our remote learning program after each lockdown and discuss ways that we can improve on previous experiences, and we welcome your feedback to help us in this endeavour. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, whether it’s to provide feedback, to seek support, to offer support or any other matter you wish to discuss that will assist all of us during this pandemic. Please continue to monitor all Compass notifications to keep abreast of all of the latest communications from the school and/or the Department of Education. School Council Last Tuesday, School Council met and approved and endorsed the school’s Graduation, Junior School Council, Property, Student Sponsorship and Uniform policies. All policies can be accessed on our website. We also approved and endorsed the GWSPS Snow Trip excursion coming up later on in the term. Child Safety Glen Waverley South Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. This will be the primary focus of our care and decision-making. GWSPS has a commitment to zero tolerance of child abuse. We support and respect all children as well as our staff and volunteers. GWSPS is committed to providing a child safe environment where children and young people feel safe, and their voices are heard when decisions are made that affect their lives. We are committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability. We want all children at this school to be safe, happy and empowered. Every person involved in GWSPS has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role he/she plays individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and young people is at the forefront of all they do and every decision they make. We have legal and moral obligations, which we follow rigorously, to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety. GWSPS’s Child Safety Policies can be viewed on our school website. Parents can access important information regarding Child Safety via the following link. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/safety/Pages/child-protection.aspx Glen Waverley South Primary School ABN: 49 140 012 401 Whites Lane, Glen Waverley, 3150 Tel: 03 9560 6371 / Fax: 03 9561 5448 Email: glen.waverley.south.ps@education.vic.gov.au Principal: Mr Con Vellios Web: www.gwsps.vic.edu.au / Facebook: www.facebook.com/GWSPS Assistant Principal: Miss Clare Read
Principal’s Report (continued) Foundation 100 Days of School Tomorrow will mark the 100th day of school for our Foundation students. Students will participate in a variety of activities based around the number ‘100’. Thank you to Miss Vaudeau and Miss O’Connor for organising the activities on this special occasion! We congratulate all of our wonderful Foundation students and acknowledge the efforts of our amazing Foundation staff who have supported and nurtured our students throughout this early part of their schooling life, literally setting up a solid foundation for their ongoing learning and wellbeing. Student Of The Week Awards Students nominated in week 1 for a Student of the Week award will receive their certificates at assembly this Friday 30th July at 2.40pm. All parents and guardians are invited to join via WebEx. Please use the following link to watch: https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/cakar.filiz.f Alternatively, enter the meeting room number: 575 797 249 Capital Works Project at GWSPS Having completed the first phase of our Asset Management Plan (AMP1) last week we finalised the selection process of appointing an architect. I am delighted to announce that SIBLING Architecture are the successful tenderers for the design of our new/upgraded school. SIBLING boast many years’ experience in Education Design. One of the things that impressed me most about their presentation was their innovation and vision. Following their appointment, we are effectively commencing the second phase of the Asset Management Plan (AMP2). A Project Control Group (PCG) consisting of a Project Officer from the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), representatives from the school, and representatives from the region, will now be formed and work closely with the architect who will act as an advisor to this group. I will continue to update you on the various stages of the project as we work our way through this very exciting time for our school community. Planned Maintenance Program Fund You may recall that during our Facilities Evaluation in 2018 and in the subsequent Condition Assessment Report, there were priority 1 and priority 2 defects that were identified. We did receive funding last year and did complete most, if not all, of the priority 1 and 2 listed defects. Some with funded money, and some with school money. At the time of the evaluation, there were a few specialist assessments which were yet to be assessed, namely roofing and windows. We have since had the roof and windows inspected and on the 23rd June this year, I was notified that $45,000 has been allocated to our school to address these specialist assessed defects. Great news! Education State Principals’ Conference Miss Read and I will be attending the Education State Principals’ Conference next Tuesday 3rd August. This is the first of 2 sessions, which will both be virtual. The second session is scheduled for September 2nd. Some of the speakers will include Professor John Hattie - Laureate Professor, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, whose presentation will focus on what we have learnt in education and how can we apply our new learning; and Dr Ben Palmer – CEO GENOS, will present on leading, empowering and thriving with emotional intelligence. These are but 2 of the many speakers and presentations we are looking forward to participating in and learning from. Messages From Our School Council President Thank You On behalf of the School Council and School Community, I would like to thank all the staff of GWSPS, for their ongoing commitment to the teaching, learning, and development goals of our students and children. It is important to acknowledge the ongoing dedication and commitment of the staff during this 5th lockdown in Victoria which has led to another episode of remote teaching and learning. This is a time of change and new experiences for both staff and students and it can be a challenging time for all of us. The school community thanks the staff for their resilience, ability to flex their working environments, juggle their own family commitments and support our students." Principal’s Day Friday 6th August 2021 is Principals' Day. Principals’ Day, initiated and supported by the Victorian Principals Association (VPA), is an opportunity to recognise the valuable work performed by the Principal and Assistant Principal of our school. On behalf of the staff and community of GWSPS, I would like to thank our Principal, Con Vellios, and Assistant Principal, Clare Read for their tireless work and dedication to our school. With their positive and enthusiastic leadership, they guide the staff and students to ensure our school is a vibrant and stimulating place of learning. Throughout their working day, Con and Clare meet with teachers, support staff, students, parents, and volunteers. They spend time discussing concerns, lesson plans, assisting with goal development, and overseeing the school's development. This year, due to the COVID Pandemic, the leadership and support Clare and Con are providing to GWSPS is no exception. There is so much new learning for everyone and new ways to guide and mentor staff. We are very fortunate at GWSPS that our children and staff have such dedicated and caring role models to lead our school. Thank you for your guidance and leadership and ongoing commitment to GWSPS. Parent Action Required Camps Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) To support schools through COVID-19 restrictions, the Department has extended the deadline for schools to submit Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) applications to Friday 13 August. The CSEF helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. Families with a valid means-tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, as well as temporary foster parents, are eligible to apply. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families. The means-tested concession cards must be valid on either: • the first day of Term 1 (Wednesday 27 January 2021) • the first day of Term 2 (Monday 19 April 2021) • the first day of Term 3 (Monday 12 July 2021). CSEF application forms are available at the office. Please note that a signed copy of your Concession Card must be attached to your form when lodging at the office. Student Absences Parents are reminded that student absences should be recorded on Compass, using the “Add Attendance note” tab on the front page of the Parent Compass account, or via the Attendance tab in the student profile section. These Notes can be done in advance of appointments or on the day of illness, as well as after a notification of absence. If a student is arriving late or leaving early, students should be reminded to check in or out from the school office. This is vital for the school to maintain its duty of care in knowing students are onsite or not, particularly in case of emergency, as well as attendance data reporting for the Department of Education and Training. Updating Parent and Student Details This week all students Levels F-5 will have brought home Student Enrolment Information Forms. Please read these forms and verify that we have accurate details for you and your child. Important details, which may affect school funding, are occupational changes (eg. change of occupation or employment status) which may have occurred since your child commenced at GWSPS. If there has been a change in parent/guardian details such as addresses, phone numbers, contact email, or emergency contacts, please make the amendments on the forms, sign and return to the school office so we can update our enrolment system. Please return forms signed even if there are no changes, so that we know that our data is correct. Glen Waverley South Primary School Page 7 of 14 ABN 49 140 012 401 29th July 2021

Japanese Word of the Week The Japanese Captains introduce the ‘Word of the Week’ to all students at assembly every Friday. Children are encouraged to use the word/phrase as much as possible during the following week. Each week students who have proved they can use the ‘Word of the Week’ to either the Japanese captains or Manzaki Sensei will go into the draw to win house points. By asking your child to tell you the ‘Word of the Week’ each week, you not only encourage him/her to use Japanese language at home, but you also have the opportunity to learn parts of the language too! ‘Word of the Week’ this week: げんき!(ge n ki !) which means, ‘I’m fine’, ‘I’m happy’ or ‘I feel energetic!’. If you say げんき? (ge n ki ?) with intonations going up towards to the end of the word, this means asking someone, ‘Are you feeling well?’, ‘How are you?’ I hope lots of children feel げんき through the week!
