Active city development through
private initiative
ISG: A syndicate and its project
Established on the 10th of July 2017 by the Street’s
Property Owners, the ISG (Real Estate Location Syndicate
Poststrasse/Alte Freiheit) set the goal of upgrading the
street Alter Freiheit/Poststrasse/Kerstenplatz and to
develop an attractive innercity zone. Location marketing,
planning and realization of an improved image and Poststrasse
management of this zone are included in the Plan.
All measures are planned to be completed by 2023,
which is when the legal timeframe of the ISG expires.

The development of the street is being carried out in
close collaboration with the City of Wuppertal. The idea
is to considerably increase the value and attractiveness
of the area for the owners, inhabitants, users and
visitors by working together and developing successful
concepts.

Revitalising a very popular street
In the 90’s a rethink began. Large investments such
as several Shopping Centres helped Elberfeld position
itself as the city centre of Wuppertal. Other major
investments to the city include the university, the Von
der Heydt-Museum, the Green Zoo of Wuppertal and
the Historic Town Hall, an internationally acclaimed
Concert Hall.

The renovation of the front court of the Railway Station
to the “City Plaza”, with access to the innercity clearly
indicates the city’s desire to upgrade Elberfeld and make
the streets Alte Freiheit-Poststrasse-Kerstenplatz the

The future Masterplan
Alte Freiheit, Poststrasse and Kerstenplatz already
enjoy the highest footfall figures in Wuppertal. And
even today this lively shopping street has up to 1.1
million visitors per month (Status December 2019).
These streets will undergo an attractive redesign
aligning with the innercity concept of creating
a positive customer journey and a high quality
experience.

The future Masterplan
Apart from new paving throughout (which will be
realized by the city of Wuppertal), the ISG will be
realising certain measures including new street
furniture; an impressive light design and a concept
for improving the facades, which will serve as a
recommendation and guideline for the owners/
landlords. In addition, the safety and cleanliness of the
street will be greatly improved by a dedicated Facilities
Management Company.

The overall goal is to convert Poststrasse into a lively
meeting place. This will create a real improvement for
the locals and the visitors. Retailers, business people,
offices and practises will enjoy the environment of
