4 1. INTRODUCTION The Australian brush tailed possum was introduced into New Zealand in 1837 to establish a fur trade. It is estimated that there are around 30 million possums in New Zealand. Possums are a major problem in New Zealand as they decimate our native bush and forests – they eat around 11,000 tonnes of leaves, berries and fruit every night. In some areas they have destroyed canopies of pohutukawa, rata, totara, titoki, kowhai and kohekohe. They also put our agricultural sector at risk by being a disease host and transmitter in the spread of bovine tuberculosis to cattle and deer. Possums are omnivores and as well as eating a wide range of leaves and berries; eat birds‟ eggs, chicks and insects. Their voracious appetite threatens the survival of many of our native plants, birds and insects. The possum has no natural enemies, allowing it to live unchallenged. Males are known to live to 9 years of age, females – 12 years. Healthy female possums can produce 2 offspring a season with autumn being the peak time for births. A good food supply means healthy breeding. Possums are marsupials – the young spend the first part of their life in their mothers pouch, feeding on milk and depend on their mothers for 5-8 months before weaning. They are also nocturnal; they feed at night and sleep in nests or dens during the day. They are reluctant to leave their dens in heavy rain, feeding only between showers and confining their movements to sheltered positions. These sheltered positions can be found inside walls or roofs of houses and hay sheds, in hollow logs and trees, clumps of flax, gorse and bracken, under tree roots or other dark, dry places. Although possums are tree dwellers they can move across open country at a reasonable speed. Male possums have a home range of about 1.9ha and females 1.3ha. They will follow the same track night after night to reach good feeding grounds sometimes producing a distinctive flattened pathway through grass or undergrowth, otherwise known as a „possum pad‟, which can be followed back to their den. Possum control methods can include shooting, trapping, poisoning, fumigation and exclusion fencing. Prevention Possums like living in warm, dry sheds and barns - if holes are blocked up possums can't make nests there. Protect trees by placing metal strips around the tree trunks about one metre from the ground. The metal strips need to be about half a metre wide. This will stop the possums from climbing up the tree to eat its leaves. Pest Management Services Ltd – Possum-Predator Fact Pack 2012
5 MAIN PREDATORS IN NEW ZEALAND Feral Cat The impact of feral cats on the environment is significant. Cats are not native to New Zealand; they were brought here by European settlers as pets and escaped into the wild. These feral cats reap havoc on native fauna; they are good hunters and prey upon native birds and lizards. They have been known to kill larger birds like kiwis and penguins. They can breed 2 to 4 times each year, averaging 4 kittens per litter, quickly re-occupying areas where there are food sources. Feral cats are usually solitary animals and have a large home range; they are widely distributed in low densities throughout New Zealand . Ferret The ferret is the largest of the mustelids in NZ, is usually between 48-56cm long including its tail and about the same size as a small cat. They are usually brown or black with creamy belly fur and a darker mask across the eyes. They produce between 4-8 kittens each year and move out into their own territory within 3 months of being born. They hunt mainly at night, are very good climbers (enabling the stealing of eggs and chicks from nests in trees) but prefer open areas and bush edges. They eat small animals such as rabbits, rodents, lizards and frogs. The ferret is one of the few predators able to kill adult kiwi. It can also kill little blue penguins. Also known as fitch or polecat. Stoat The most common of the 3 introduced mustelids, they are found almost anywhere in NZ. More common in forests, they are able to cover huge distances. The stoat grows between 34-40cm long, including its tail, is very thin and about half the size of a rabbit. It has a chestnut-brown coat, which turns white in winter, a light-coloured belly and a bushy black- tipped tail. It is an extremely fierce fighter, killing its prey with a sharp bite behind the ear. Stoats will kill more than they need for food, they will also attack prey much larger than themselves. Young stoats are adults at 2 months and female kittens can be mated while still in the nest. It is estimated that stoats kill an average of 40 North Island brown kiwi chicks a day – a total of 15,000 a year and 60% of the chicks born each year. Weasels The weasel is the smallest of the mustelids and not as common, growing to 20-25cm long and weighing from 80-150gm. Its colouring is very like the stoat but with a more red-brown coat and a shorter tail. Although small, it will attack prey much larger than itself and has had an impact on native birds and lizards, especially the skink. They kill most of their prey underground and are usually found where there are plenty of mice. They are found in low numbers in most habitat types. 6 2. BAITS 12PP01, 12PP02, 12PP03: PINDONE PELLETS - 2kg, 10kg and 25kg For the control of Possums and Rats Pindone is a first generation anticoagulant cereal bait. It does not pose the same risks of secondary poisoning and bait residuals that second generation anticoagulants do. The pellets contain the active ingredient Pindone (0.5g/kg) and are dyed green to New Zealand standard specifications to afford protection to birds. Pindone is a slow acting anticoagulant that needs to be consumed over several days to be effective. The toxin reduces the clotting power of the blood causing internal hemorrhage. Death occurs 4 to 11 days after bait consumption. While possums and rats may be active in the treated area for 4 to 5 days after first taking the poison, very few carcasses will be found as they usually go back to their nest or den sites to die. There is no risk of bait shyness as the pest will continue to feed until it has had a lethal dose – it does not associate the toxin or the slowing down of its bodily process with the consumption of the pellets. Pre feeding is not required as the pests are easily drawn to the bait for consumption making it a very cost effective way to control both possums and rats. Pindone has an effective antidote in Vitamin K¹ if risk of pets consuming bait occurs. Pindone is undetectable in sheep livers, fat or muscle three weeks after administration. Baits can therefore be used on residential and pastoral land such as around urban and semi urban areas: market gardens, plant nurseries and horticultural land, botanical gardens, parks and reserves, bush, river banks, farm buildings, houses and gardens - most areas of human habitation. Warning: * Always read the label before use and use as instructed. * Precautionary measures such as removing stock and keeping stock out from the treated area for a month should be followed. * Remove any remaining baits at completion of control. * Place warning notices around treated areas. **No licence is required in the use of Pindone Pellets for Rat or Possum control but the pellets must be used in bait stations. Registered pursuant to the ACVM Act 1997: No V4396. See www.nzfsa.govt.nz/acvm for registration conditions. Approved substance under the HSNO Act 1996: HSR001604. See www.ermanz.govt.nz for approval conditions. Recommended bait stations: As this product is required to be used in bait stations when targeting both possums and rats we recommend either the NOPESTS Multifeeder Bait Station (11RBS11) for ground baiting or the Kilmore Bait Station (13BS07) for tree baiting. Other models/types of bait stations are listed also. If targeting rats only, please refer to our Rodent Fact Pack for suitable bait stations. Our Rodent Fact Pack can be viewed on our website or if you would like a hard copy sent to you, please give us a call on 0800 111 466 or email us at sales@nopests.co.nz Recommended directions for use: Precautionary measures: remove all domestic stock from the area being treated and keep stock out of the area until the bait has been removed or has disintegrated. 7 Possums Locate possum sign. Possum sign can be identified by their droppings and by damage to the leaves or stems of trees or other plants. (The placement of the bait stations is important to the success of the operation) Bait stations should be placed along bush borders at intervals of 50 metres but at no more than 100 metre intervals. They should be sited in areas of possum sign - scratchings and droppings, den sites, preferred food sources and areas where possums have left a travel path. Ideally a suitable bait station will have the ability to hold up to 2 kgs of pellets. It is vital to put out enough bait for 2-3 days feeding to ensure all possums in the vicinity have fed well, then leave for 4-5 days. Repeat this application. If the bait is gone after the first night you have not put out enough pellets - redo. DO NOT LAY BAIT if heavy rain is expected within 24 hours. Check for further sign after 9-14 days and if possum sign is still seen repeat the two applications. This is called PULSE BAITING. 3. LURES 12PUClov1L: Clove 1 Litre 12PUASni1L: Aniseed 1 Litre 12PUAn250: Aniseed 250ml 12PULe250: Lemon 250ml 12PUCl250: Clove 250ml 12PUOr250: Orange 250ml 12PUEu250: Eucalyptus 250ml 12PUE250: Peanut 250ml 12PUBac1L: Bacon 1 Litre 12PUBac5L: Bacon 5 Litre Flavoured oil based lures are for attracting predators (eg possums) and are for use within bait stations such as 13BS02 KK Bait Station. Make your own lure by mixing the flavoured oil lure with flour and icing sugar to gain even better results. To prevent animals being caught by the nose or face in leg-hold traps – do not place lure directly onto the trap. 12Pu: Lured Paste (12PUAn: aniseed, 12PUBac; Bacon,12PUpcinn: cinnamon, 12PUclov: clove, 12PULe: Lemon, 12PUOr: Orange, 12PUEu: Eucalyptus) An almost glow-in-the-dark formulation that resists moisture; Wonder Lure paste is a specially blended pre-feed paste to accompany cyanide possum paste. It is desirable to undertake pre-feeding with lured paste at least twice prior to the application of cyanide paste. Available in 500gm tubes with cinnamon, clove and raspberry flavours. 4. 13 6A. TRAP COVERS PREDATOR: 14TR16: Fenn Trap Single Cover – Mk2 Heavy duty plastic stock proof cover designed to go over one set trap or for housing poison baits for targeting ferrets, stoats and weasels. It protects non target species by allowing only the target animals to access the baited set trap. They are designed to be strong enough to withstand many years of wear and tear, yet are light enough to be carried in stacks of up to 20. The narrow entrance tunnel at either end guides the mustelid over the centre of the trap, making it difficult to jump over the trap. The entrance hole can also be varied to restrict access. Traps that are suitable for use with this include the No Pest MK4 14TR37 and No Pest MK6 14TR38 Fenn trap, Victor #1 14TR10 Trap and the Victor Professional Rat Trap 19RT20. Measures: approx. 450mm L and 140mm internal width at entrance hole. Set your trap(s) along a wall or bank that acts as a „funnel‟ stearing the mustelids towards the trap cover - mustelids cannot resist tunnels. Trapping will be enhanced with the use of bait such as a cracked raw egg or fresh meat. Ensure you change bait regularly depending on the weather. Place the cover carefully over the trap(s) to ensure plenty of room for the trap jaws to close without hitting the walls of the cover and use No.8 wire pegs to pin the trap cover down and tie the chain to the cover. 14TR18: Fenn Trap Double Tunnel Similar to the single cover 14TR18 but designed to accommodate two traps. 19RT21: Corflute Tunnel A lightweight and durable tunnel designed for better safety and security from non target species. Once captured the rodent is kept from view/sight.
