PEDRO’S BULL$HIT: Well, whoever my Tmx Partner is, I just don’t seem to be able to get past 2nd Place. For our night Tournament at Lake Pleasant, I brought a guest (Troy) who will join the Club as a Boater later this year [Editor: Excellent news, Mark!]. To start with, I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to fish, due to the Monsoons. But I prepped all day by keeping an eye on the Radar and it showed that we should be able to get it in. So, after our 5 pm Pre-Launch Meeting, all 5 (yes, FIVE!) boats got in the water and started fishing, with one eye on the Weather. Me and Troy decided to stay close to the Southside and fish some Islands, which produced very well. I caught our biggest fish (2.85 lb) with a Deep Diving Crankbait on my 3rd Cast. Troy was using a Dropshot, which got our other two weigh- in fish. We also caught several smaller ones. At about 10:30 pm, I got a call from Chris “I’m Full of BS” Smith, saying he had spoken with Tournament Director “Mad Dog” Dan Wolters, who said we were going to do the weigh-in at 11 pm, because the Lightning to the North was getting too close. No sooner did we get to the Ramp than the Skies opened up. Sorry, Terry, not sure anyone took any pictures. It was coming down really good during the weigh-in and I think everyone just wanted to get out of there. [Editor: Such wimps: if you watched the Olympics, photographers kept shooting through downpours. It’s all about commitment! Or, could the difference possibly be due to the huge fees Page 1 of 10
Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. July 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 2 of 10 those folks get for each photo published? Personally, my camera is more waterproof than I am. And the photos I take are crappy, regardless of the weather conditions.] Congrats to Scott “I’m Just Happy to Be Fishing PBM Again” Brown and Chris “I’m Full of BS” Smith for finishing in 1st Place. Not sure how everyone else faired, but you couldn’t ask for a better July night to fish, except for the Rain that came in late. Hell, I’ll take 5.5 hours of fishing anytime. Pedro has spoken his Bull$hit. See everyone at Canyon next Month. [Editor: Everyone? Lol! Reality Alert: I think it would be fabulous to have at least 10 boats for that one but three to five seems much more likely. It seems that we are not much of a night fishing club.] Tight Lines. Thanks for reading Pedro’s Bull$hit, the gift that, much like Montezuma’s Revenge, keeps on giving. [Editor: Capitalization courtesy of Random House.] MISC INFORMATION Updated 2021 Members List. The list has been updated for July and redistributed to all 2021 members. PBM Will Meet Again, on August 16, at 1800! The in-person meeting will be at Key Impact Sales, 2328 W Royal Palm Rd, Ste 1, Phoenix, AZ 85021. This is Curtis DeLaGrange’s office, near I-17 and Northern, east of the Freeway, north of Northern and west of 23rd Ave. Curtis’ company generously provides bottled water and snacks. For those who missed the June meeting, President Figueroa has added a new twist to these meetings. It’s a free “Door Prize” raffle of donated items. In the first one, fishing lures donated by BOD members dominated. I don’t know what happened in the July meeting. Only four people, all BOD members, attended that meeting. I was not among them and I don’t know whether a Door Prize raffle was held (it would have been weird for BOD members to win their own donated prizes). Anyway, to donate something for the next meeting, contact Mr. Figueroa. To win something, show up and get a free ticket at the door! CV/COVID-19 Protocols are Evolving. Please check the Centers for Disease Control or maybe a Ouija Board for current protocols about Safe Distancing and wearing masks. They change too often, and at too many levels of government, for me to summarize the local situation here. The Delta Variant and even newer variants are causing changes in safety measures, but FULL VACCINATION is still the best protective measure. Regardless, at PBM events, members and guests are STILL ASKED to wear masks if they approach within 6 feet of anyone. This shows concern and respect for people who are concerned about CV/COVID-19 transmission. Some people are much more susceptible to infection than others are. For example, you might consider yourself “immune” but immunity- suppressed people and Old Folks, like the Editor, might not be, even if they are well vaccinated. 2021 Membership Dues ($50.00) must be paid electronically, via Zelle or Venmo. Download the current Membership Form from our website, complete all fields and send it to PBM Secretary Link. Send your Zelle or Venmo dues payment to PBM Treasurer Link. Please note that Venmo recently announced that soon it will start assessing a small fee for some transactions. Which ones, you ask? I have read the news releases but I’m still not sure. Anyway, you might want to check into it before using Venmo. Draw TMX entries must be completed by Noon on Friday, 8 (eight) days prior to the Tmx. 1. Step 1: By that deadline, every angler who wants to fish the Canyon Lake tmx MUST notify Acting Draw Tmx Director (Mark Figueroa, 480.387.1348; Pedro 2024 Email Link) AND give him ALL the basic information required of all entrants (see below). This step is required for PBM to comply with its insurance coverage. 2. Step 2: Pay your Entry Fees electronically, via Zelle or Venmo, to PBM Treasurer Link. $50 for your basic entry and $5 (or more) for each of the two cumulative Side-Pots. Both Side-Pots are voluntary and cumulative. If you choose to play, you must pay for any entries you have missed. If you are only entering one Side-Pot, tell Curtis which one it is or you might be entered in a third Side-Pot, which helps fund his family vacations. When you notify Mark that you are entering, you MUST ALSO tell him: 1. Whether you are entering as a Boater or as a Nonboater. 2. If you are declaring someone as your co-angler, who it is and how to contact them. FileName PBM Newsletter.202107.Final.docx

You have read and understand the PBM Draw Tmx Rules and will adhere to them and to any additional guidance provided in the mandatory Pre-Launch, lake-side meeting. 4. You understand that fees paid for participating in this tournament shall be forfeited to PBM as provided for in the Draw Tmx Rules and shall not be refunded or applied to a future event. 5. You meet all applicable PBM standards for boat and vehicle insurance. 6. You shall HOLD HARMLESS (i.e. you waive and release) PBM and its tournament officials from any and all claims of injury and/or damage that you incur or cause in connection with participation in this tournament, including travel to or from, prefishing, launching and competing in the event, including any and all claims of negligence. Guests must submit the Draw Tournament Entry Form that is downloadable from the website! Note: If you pay your entry fee to Curtis but don’t notify Mark, you will not be eligible to fish the tmx, but your entry fee will be refunded! Conversely, if you notify Mark that you are entering but you fail to pay Curtis, you will not be eligible to fish the tmx. Don’t be left on shore! PBM Will Fish Again, at Night! Our next Draw Tournament is August 21, at Canyon Lake, from 1900 to Midnight. See our website’s Meetings and Tournaments Page for a Facts Sheet and Maps for details about the event. We will launch from the Jojoba Ramp. Overnight camping MIGHT be available at the Canyon Lake Marina. Or, overnighters could trespass camp in the Jojoba or the Laguna parking lot and hope the USFS Rangers are asleep. BE CAREFUL! August 21 is late summer. Hopefully, the FAT Lady has not yet sung the Monsoon’s swan song. If drought-stricken Arizona is lucky, it will be your companion Canyon. As the Arizona Game and Fish Department has reminded Arizona boaters, summer storms break the oppressive heat but can be deadly for boaters and others. Canyon has a lot of places for boats to hide on the lake, or up-river, but it can still get very “interesting.” If you opt to hide along a wall, PLEASE be aware of the possibility of rockfalls. I have SEEN several big ones myself on Canyon; 3 of them dropped lethal boulders within a rod’s length of my boat. So, pay attention to what’s overhead and to the latest local wind, rain and lightning forecasts. Remember: graphite fishing rods also make great lightning rods. If you feel the buzz of electricity, it might be a warning that Lucifer won that fiddling contest, is headed your way to collect and you need to IMMEDIATELY drop your rod and seek cover! For another peek at the 2021 Tournaments Schedule, visit the PBM website. Please be aware that some BOD members have discussed club participation in this summer’s Night Tournaments and at least a few intend to recommend significant changes in the 2022 summer schedule. Stay tuned for further developments. Better yet, come to the August 15 club meeting and express your opinions, so the BOD is better informed for its August 18 discussion. Anglers pay double- occupancy Lodge costs (all inclusive food and drink!) and make their own flight reservations. Contact Terry for details. Seats are limited; first come, first served. • Win a Fishing Rod: PBM needs more Boaters! So, in January, PBM Sponsor ES Advisement, LLC, offered a NEW OR LIGHTLY USED bass rod to the member who brings in more new Boaters than anyone else this year. The contest runs through October. Terry Johnson is tracking all new Boaters and who brought them into the club. In November, Terry will announce the winner! Craig Rafferty remains in the lead, with many members tied for last. FISH TALES is an opportunity for members to share knowledge and opinions on fishing, tackle and boat-related topics. Articles have covered boats and rigging suggestions, trailer repairs, electronics and their proper set-up, tackle best suited to Arizona waters, favorite and/or successful presentations, etc. FISH TALES can also provide details or testimonials about a PBM Sponsor. Articles may be submitted to PBM Secretary Link any time. PBM Drive to Gain New Boaters: No progress to report. Assuming normal attrition from now through October, eventually, we will not be able to pair every Nonboater in the Draw unless we recruit more Boaters, enough to fully support our club goal of fishing 25-30 boats in each Draw Tournament. A LATE SUBMISSION FROM CHRIS “I’M FULL OF BS” SMITH FOR THE ROOSEVELT TOURNAMENT IN MAY 2021: First off, I must get these reports done sooner. [Editor: Agreed, Chris, but your reports are better off late than never. They are always interesting to read and often informative. Plus, you usually provide a photo.] FileName PBM Newsletter.202107.Final.docx
Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. July 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 5 of 10 Excited to fish the lake for the first time. Hitch a ride with Matt Morris and off we go. We are staying at a place that makes Motel 6 look like the Ritz. However, we have nice soft beds, not cots, and a warm shower when we wake up the next morning. After checking in to the flea bag, we head out for dinner. We stop at a pizza spot and the waitress says it will be a few minutes – they are busy. I count about 12 tables and only three are occupied, a new definition of busy. Food was good. We go out to the camp site to shoot the breeze and get the low down for the next day. I introduce myself to Bill and we chat about the awesome day he had pre-fishing. Great, now I will not sleep anticipating a wide-open day tomorrow and visions of smoking all the Roland Martin wannabes. Again, Devil Dan makes this old man get up way too early for the pre-meeting, but the shower was a great way to start day. Think I need to join MLF to get a later start. We launch the boat and off we go. We miss getting out in front of the other tournaments and there is a line of boats where we wanted to start. No problem, it is a big lake. Bill catches a nice one and then a huge slab crappie, about 2 to 3 pounds, the size of a dinner plate. We fill the box quickly and now it is culling time. We are sweating like pigs fishing and all the sudden we hear a loud roar. Looking south towards the Salt River we see a cloud of dust and about four to five kayakers looking around like “what happened.” A large part of the cliff came tumbling down into the water. Luckily it missed every yakker. About that time, we decide to take a boat trip to cool off. We hit up a spot and picked a few there. Weird fishing right next to cows. Worried one might decide to bite my crawdad lure. “Would that count as a goon fish?” The rest of the day was devoted to Bill catching larger fish and just about every one of mine getting culled. Great!!! We have a heavier bag. We tried lots of lures and different spots. With about an hour to go we went to the other side of the lake and hit up a cove with some inside points and no wind. Bill ties on a Dobyns jig and puts on a trailer. While tying on the jig and during his first cast Bill complains about the fish not hitting a jig and he does not understand why. It is about a 20 second diatribe. He puts the reel in gear and BAM, game on. I laugh, “guess you have to complain to get a jig fish.” No more than 10 minutes later another point BAM!!! Yep, again. Sweet two larger fish and another cull. At some point during the day I ask Bill where he bought his new boat. The boat is in immaculate shape. Much to my surprise Bill says he bought it used. The story is great. He sees the boat on-line, loads the family in the car and off they go to Oklahoma. Rides awesome and extremely comfortable to fish out of. The ride to the ramp was sweet. The Okie Special gets up on plane and just smokes over the wind chop. Enjoyable riding with a Captain who really knows how to handle a boat for a smooooooth ride. If you get the chance to fish with Bill, jump on it, I had a great day. A Sad Reminder: for AZ anglers, the only valid question re: skin cancer isn’t “If?” – but “When?” 2. Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. July 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 6 of 10 NEXT UP: FISHING CANYON LAKE; NIGHT DRAW TOURNAMENT, AUGUST 21 The August 21 PBM Draw Tournament at Canyon Lake will launch at the Jojoba Ramp. Overnight camping is available at the Canyon Lake Marina. Overnight camping in the parking lots at the Jojoba or Laguna ramp is subject to ticketing by USFS Rangers. Canyon Lake is a quality rather than quantity lake. Friends of mine who have been fishing it this summer have found it very challenging. In previous years, fishing there has often picked up in late August and through September. Whether that will hold true this year remains to be seen. More information on fishing Canyon Lake is available on the PBM website, by downloading the Facts Sheet for this tournament or by reading an article in the Chatterbait section. DRAW TOURNAMENT: LAKE PLEASANT, JULY 24 (NIGHT TMX) RESULTS Logistics: Launch at Pleasant Harbor Marina North Ramp. No information provided on Pre-Launch Meeting, Starting or Ending Time, weather conditions, etc. Facts Sheet and Maps on PBM website. Five boats entered this tournament. To get that many, President Figueroa had to make personal recruiting calls to many more members and bring his own Guest Nonboater. Chris Smith: Woke up on Saturday and checked the temperature. High 80s, FANTASTIC!!! Can’t wait to fish my favorite lake. No sleeping on a cot, no Burros looking at me in the middle of the night, sleeping in my own bed. Coordinate the ride out to Pleasant with my partner extraordinaire, Scott Brown. Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. July 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 7 of 10 My tackle is ready, and Scott pulls up out front. We load the boat and chat on the way out about a bunch of stuff. Scott is in the process of tricking out his truck. Lots of moving parts. He tells me to ignore the beeping sounds, he is working on figuring out what they are. Fair enough. We get to the lake and the last one to roll in is the Tournament Director. Short speech and off we go. We dump the Death Star in the water and when I get down to the dock, I let Scott know there is a beeping sound and I tried everything but could not figure it out. Scott says, “Don’t worry, it will stop.” While idling out Scott lets me know about props, jack plate, etc., with the goal of being able to go 85 MPH. We get to the 5 MPH buoys and I grab on to every protruding item, hoping/praying to stay in the boat. After about a 2 second ride across the lake we start fishing the hot spot that Scott caught lots of fish at last week. I am freaking stoked!!! We hit the steep banks for nada, hit a few points for more nada. Next, we start video game fishing (dropshotting). Scott was metering lots of fish deep, so we drop on them, again for nada. About now the wind is blowing pretty good, and both of us hate fishing in the wind. We decide to shoot to the other side of the lake and find a cove to get out of the wind. We roll into a sweet looking cove with steep rock cliffs. Jig fishing time!!! Scott picks up a nice one, Carolina rigging. I nail a big fish pitching a jig to a ledge on a vertical rock wall. I quickly get another nice one fishing the same spot. Three in the well in less than 15 minutes. Must have been feeding time. No action after that. It’s now dark and, due to the overcast, moonlight is not going to happen. We decide to go North up the river to fish a big fish spot. The closer we get the darker the sky and it ain’t looking good. We decide to “get outta Dodge” and go somewhere else. Off to the South end of the lake to fish an island. We roll up and Scott nails a nice one, dropshotting. We cull one and improve our bag weight. We spend the next few hours fishing around the island for zip. Scott has this awesome green light setup he made which makes fishing at night a pleasure. A ton of small baitfish are in the lights. Gizzard Shad, Stripers and bass are tearing through the schools feeding. Sometimes the fish launch themselves out of water eating the baitfish. We throw everything but the kitchen sink for nada. Fun to watch, frustrating to not catch. About now we are seeing lightning and hearing thunder. I call Tournament Director Dan and am ready to beg to weigh in early, Dan says “Yes, 11:00.” Cool, begging not required. We pull into the launch ramp area and it starts to rain. I stay with the boat while Scott gets the truck. Remember the beeping sound, it was the lights I left on. Truck would not start. Think I might have passed Terry on the FUBAR of the year award. [Editor: Chris, I would be honored to finish 2nd to you!] I am, rightfully so, soaked head to toe now. Kudos to Dan “The Man” Wolters for jumping the truck. We have the best tournament director in the world!!! Why is Pleasant my favorite lake? I have been on the winning team each time we fished there. I am 2 for 2 at Pleasant. A FEW OBSERVATIONS AFTER OUR SECOND NIGHT TOURNAMENT As noted elsewhere, the 2021 Summer Nights Tournaments were an experimental first for PBM. Participation has been light, to say the least. A few BOD members have discussed this and are questioning whether these events are worth continuing. They intend to discuss the situation more formally in August and consider a variety of potential changes, up to and including dropping Night Tournaments and/or dropping Summer tournaments from AOY points awards. Stay tuned for further developments. Better yet, come to the August club meeting and voice your opinion. FileName PBM Newsletter.202107.Final.docx
Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. July 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 8 of 10 PBM AOY STANDINGS Caution: the standings below MIGHT NOT BE ACCURATE. Tournament Director Dan Wolters says he has not been tracking AOY points for club meeting attendance (5 points per meeting). I think this version includes meeting points for some folks but not necessarily for everyone. Please contact Dan if you think your total is wrong. If I get a revised version from Dan, I will replace this one on the website. Also, in regard to AOY points, some BOD members question whether anglers should be restricted to Boater or Nonboater status, depending on how they began the year. For example, Mark Figueroa has fished as a Boater in every tournament this year, yet he is considered a Nonboater because that is what he declared in November 2020, when he renewed his membership for 2021. Well, Mark says that in November he did not anticipate buying a boat. But he got a new job and a pay raise at GoDaddy! (congrats again, Mark!), so he test-drove a borrowed Triton in our January and February tournaments. He loved it, so he bought the boat in March and has fished from it as a Boater in every tournament since then. Most anglers think that being a Boater has advantages that Nonboaters do not have, such as control over where to fish and when to move. Clearly, Mark’s points this year suggest that might be true even for him. [LOL!] Because this issue is NOT addressed by the By-Laws or the Draw Tmx Rules, in August the BOD will discuss it, as well as how and by whom non-tournament AOY points are awarded and tracked. Stay tuned for news about that discussion. Also, the club meeting on August 16 would be a good opportunity to make your thoughts known.
