Pet Gazette Spring/Summer 2021 A word from the CTSPCA Advocate Despite Donny thinking the manager’s desk at the shelter belongs to him, we are pleased to welcome Sarah Zaccardi to the CTSPCA family as the new Shelter Manager! Sarah has a strong background in operations management, having run her own Starbucks and opening a flagship store on the Vegas strip. Sarah joins us as we begin to see a light at the end of this Covid‐19 tunnel. Donny The pandemic has been profound in many ways. For some, it’s been isolating. For others, it’s been an opportunity to explore how to connect with others. For the shelter, it’s given us a chance to find unique ways to stay engaged and focused on our mission of rescuing cats and dogs and placing them with their Forever Family. Even though the shelter has been closed to the general public this past year, we have continued to pull animals from other shelters where they faced euthanasia and helped them find their forever homes through our adoption program. The “appointments only” option has allowed potential adopters the chance to spend quality time with a shelter dog or get a lot more detailed information about a shelter cat than what might usually happen when we have several people onsite at the same time. Though limited and modified from our regular program, volunteers have continued to spend valuable socialization time with the animals. While we have been successful with these approaches, we are excited to once again open back up to the public in the relatively near future. During this time, we’ve also made a lot of progress with our plans to build a new facility. While we’re not quite there yet, we are getting closer every month! And we continue our efforts to expand our network of short‐ term and long‐term fosters. We are very thankful to the fosters who came to our rescue when we had several unexpected puppies needing a temporary home because they were all too young to be at the shelter. There are so many amazing things going on at the Central Texas SPCA, but we need more help. Whether it’s adding your special talents or skills to one of our committees, signing up to be a foster or just spreading the word about the shelter, we hope 2021 sees more people get involved with this amazing organization. Please reach out to us to discover how YOU can make a difference today! info@CentralTexasSPCA.org Thank you for being part of our special community! Pets Needing Special Homes From socially anxious and behaviorally challenged dogs coming from a hoard of 80 in Burnet County, to an abandoned dog nursing Gavin & five puppies, we have had several hurdles this Spring. Gabriel Gavin and Gabriel are two Chihuahua/Terrier mix dogs who are struggling to learn to trust people after having lived their previous life in an over‐crowded hoarding environment with minimal care and little to no human interaction. Since being with us, they’ve made progress, but it has been and will be a very slow process to build trust. They would do better in a dedicated foster home that can continue providing the love, care and patience they need to break free of their past trauma. Annie is a beautiful German Shepherd that we found in one of our pens one morning, along with her five puppies. After‐hours on a Friday night, someone actually climbed over our 6’ fence with Annie and her puppies and placed them in one of our outside kennels, along with a note that she had been found behind a dumpster in an apartment complex, scrounging for whatever she could find to eat. Annie was extremely emaciated, had an injury on one of her teats and was struggling to feed her pups who were around 6 to 8‐weeks of age. Annie After confirming the pups did not have parvo, we were able to place them in foster homes and turn our attention to caring for Annie. We recently learned that Annie is less than 1‐year old, which means she most likely got pregnant when she went into heat the very first time. She was also diagnosed with a heart murmur which will require treatment and possible surgery. This medical care could potentially cost around $5,000. As a result of her heart condition, she cannot be spayed. Because she is unable to be spayed, she will require a home where she will not come into contact with any unaltered male dogs, nor will she be able to go off‐leash at dog parks. We would love to find a home for sweet Annie through adoption or our Forever Foster program where she can undergo this life‐saving treatment and potential surgery and recuperate in a stress‐free environment. Madelyn lost her home when her former human moved out of state and left her behind. Madelyn used to be a feral cat. She slowly learned to trust others and lived in a house with another cat. We suspect she would get along with other kitties, especially if they don’t bug her too much. When she first came to the shelter, she was very scared most of the time. Now that she’s in a foster home, she’s doing well. Madelyn even had an at‐home vet visit recently and did well with the vet she’d never met before. While she is currently in long‐term foster, we are desperately seeking a Forever Foster or, better yet, an adopter to give this beautiful girl a final forever home! Madelyn YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY! Whether by making a monetary gift to the shelter, applying to adopt or foster one of these special needs pets or just spreading the word about their unique situation, we appreciate your support! 3
Foster Program Did you know that the CTSPCA has three types of fostering? The first is Short‐Term Foster which is when we need to place an animal in a foster home for a few days to several weeks. This is most commonly needed when we have a litter of kittens or puppies who are too young to safely be in the shelter. The second is Long‐Term Foster which is usually needed when we have an animal that is undergoing treatment for a condition like heartworms and requires a quiet environment in which to rest/recuperate for two to six months. The last is Forever Foster which is when we place an animal with a family/individual who is willing and able to provide the ideal home environment for that animal for the rest of its life, but where the CTSPCA continues to cover the cost of expenses related to that animal’s care (food, medicine, vet visits, etc…). Animals who qualify for Forever Foster are those with very little chance of adoption through our regular placement program. This may be as a result of the animal’s personality or a condition requiring some sort of ongoing treatment. This form of life‐time fostering allows us to safely place that animal in a loving home which then allows us to rescue more animals. Meet Destiny! She was adopted as a cute, fluffy puppy and returned 4 years later when the dynamics of her family changed and created too much stress on her. Even though it takes time to earn her trust, once Destiny knows you won’t break her heart, she will shower you with constant affection. All she really wants is to be loved unconditionally and hangout while you read a book or watch t.v. She considers herself to be an awesome lap dog. While she is slightly fearful of men, she does have a few guy friends around the shelter. And while she has gotten along with some dogs, Destiny would do best in a home without other pets or children. She is available for adoption or Forever Foster. Destiny 4
Shout Outs! The CTSPCA staff is beyond dedicated! During the arctic winter storm in February, several of our employees were unable to safely drive to the shelter due to road conditions. So what did they do? They WALKED to and from the shelter to make sure the animals were taken care of during that horrible weather. Immense thanks to David, Heidi and Kassidy! Ellie Our foster network sure came in handy this spring! After intaking 10 dogs from a hoarding situation, we arrived the very next day to find one of those Dodge dogs giving birth to two puppies. Luckily, our dog caretaker, Faith, was able to foster the momma We would also like to thank dog (Darla) and the two newborn EVERYONE who so generously puppies (Charlie and Chico) provided us with clean water which was also right at the start while the shelter’s plumbing was of the winter storm. A few weeks broken as a result of the storm. It later when Faith found Annie and took almost 4 weeks before water her puppies at the shelter, was restored but the community caretaker Haley and a few of our support helped us make it other fosters came to the rescue through!
