• Chile is the longest narrow country in the world? It stretches 2,650 miles
from north to south on the Pacific coast but its average width is only 110
miles.
• the Juan Fernández islands in the South Pacific are part of Chile? The
main island in this group is called Robinson Crusoe Island because the
real Crusoe, a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk was stranded
there in 1704. Daniel Defoe modeled his hero after Selkirk, but set his
novel in the Caribbean. Have you heard of Robinson Crusoe?
• in Patagonia, in Southern Chile, scientists have found the remains of a
giant ground sloth? When standing, it was 10 feet tall! It had the body of
a rhinoceros, three-inch long claws and a bulging head.
• Chile was ruled by General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, a military dictator
from 1973 to 1989? It is now a democracy again.
• Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda received the Nobel prize for Literature in

• one of the many names for Guyana is “Land of the Six Peoples”. This
refers to the main ethnic groups of the population – East Indian, African,
Chinese, Portuguese, British and Amerindian. All of these groups except
one were brought to Guyana because of sugar. Do you know which
group is the exception?

examples of Creole? Creole is a language that develops when people

communicate.
