PHOTO E.T. BECKER As a women-helmed technology education development company Waypoint Ventures is pleased to support Sound Experience, especially Girls at the Helm. It's more important than ever that girls have mentors to show them the ropes to reach success. We thank the women who serve as role models in leadership while working with participants. And, we look forward to GATH graduate resumes at Waypoint someday soon. 2
From the Executive Director Thirty years! It began as an idea that “people will protect what they learn to love” modeled after legendary folk singer and activist Pete Seeger’s Hudson River Sloop Clearwater program. Idealists with a vision for a better world, like Sound Experience founder Morley Horder, took the helm of Adventuress in 1989 and began changing perceptions – and the course of many lives. Over the past three decades, an estimated 30,000 children and teens have sailed aboard Adventuress on powerful day and overnight programs, directly engaging with this extraordinary body of water that sustains us and countless other species. While onboard, under the grandeur of Adventuress’ gaff-rigged sails, young people experience wind and waves, the power of nature and the critical role we all play in the future of our waterways and oceans. They experience what it means to be a shipmate. And they learn to love the Salish Sea. The next 30 years begins today with Puget Sound’s environmental tall ship fresh off a decade-long restoration effort. No amount of thanks will be enough to all who made this happen. This beloved 1913 National Historic Landmark sailing ship – one of only two still in active operation on the West Coast – is now fully restored thanks to the extraordinary commitment of this community. Adventuress is ready for the next generation of shipmates. Partnership has always been important to serving youth, such as the hundreds of dedicated teachers who have brought their classes aboard Adventuress. Partnership will be more important than ever in the years to come to ensure Adventuress’ programs remain relevant. These include the new Everett at Sea initiative (see pgs 4-5) and Washington State Skills Center programs for high school students where students get credit to learn maritime skills. Throughout the region, our team is fostering deeply impactful partnerships with schools, agencies, ports and others committed to educating our youth. This is the future of Sound Experience. Thank you for joining us tonight and thank you for giving generously to ensure that powerful Adventuress programs continue to change young lives and our region for the better. Catherine Collins 3
Everett at Sea is Launched! Adventuress, Sound Experience and a team of enthusiastic partners continue to make a difference in the lives of young people in communities throughout the Puget Sound region This year marked the first community-wide effort to reach young people growing up in the Casino Road neighborhood of Everett with powerful shipboard programs that are relevant to their lives. This densely populated community is marked by high-density, multi-family apartment buildings and lies in the shadow of Boeing. It is home to passionate individuals and families working tirelessly for safe spaces for their children, and to create healthy life choices and experiences for their teenagers. In August, Adventuress cast off from the Port of Everett on a multi-day voyage with teens from the Casino Road community, Everett police officers and other community leaders. While sailing together, teens and adults worked in watches to sail the ship, learned about the Salish Sea and experienced a community of respect while aboard. Most important, they became shipmates with the idea that relationships built “at sea” will strengthen community connections at home. Already, we are hearing positive ripples from our partners. Thank you to the City of Everett, WA State Agencies, Mayor Cassie Franklin, ChildStrive, YMCA of Snohomish County, the Port of Everett and the Everett Police Department. With restoration now complete, Sound Experience’s staff and leadership are working to create programs like Everett at Sea across the region – where an Adventuress experience is more relevant than ever. Your support at the Party for Adventuress will help to grow this program and ears of Soun Y others like it in 2020. 30 d Celebrating Ex perience 1989-2019 4

Gordon Sims Gordon "Bucko Billy" Sims has been a beloved part of the Adventuress family since 1991, rising to the position of Captain from 2002 to 2005, and returning as Captain in 2015. He is an experienced and talented mariner and thoughtful educator with values deeply grounded in his love for the natural world. Thank you, Gordon, for all your wisdom, excellence and dedication to empowering youth to be good shipmates, mariners, and stewards of the marine environment! Chris “Zeal” Chimenti Captain Zeal is one of two operating captains, joining full-time in 2018. He's worked on board as Bosun, 2nd Mate, Engineer, Chief Mate and as relief captain in 2017. "I live and breathe boats and I call the Salish Sea my home, and this passion manifests itself in striving to be a better leader, teacher and mariner," says Zeal. When ashore, he's found gracing many wooden boat projects with his carpentry, rigging and sail making skills, and will be working as a shipwright this winter on the final deck phase of Adventuress’ restoration. Thank you, Zeal, for your leadership, passion for teaching and commitment to building a strong team! Rachael Slattery Rachael Slattery first joined Adventuress in 2008 as a volunteer Educator/Deckhand, but due to her extensive maritime experience, rose quickly to the positions of Chief Mate and then Captain in 2015. Rachael travels to the Puget Sound region from her farm in Rhode Island to lead our Girls at the Helm trips, and is proof that Adventuress’ community of passionate sailors knows no boundaries. Thank you, Rachael, for your commitment to our girls and all youth, and for growing the next generation of passionate environmental stewards –whether on land or on the sea. 19
