THANK YOU! We hope this issue of Canadian Sailings finds our readers and advertisers all well and safe during these challenging times. We are all in this together and to- gether we will succeed in overcoming COVID-19. On behalf of the Grunt Club and Canadian Sailings Magazine, we want to thank our loyal readers and advertisers for their participation in this special issue “A Tribute to the Grunt Club”. As a result of the pandemic, it has been a difficult year for the Grunt Club ne- cessitating the cancellation of many events including the annual dinner held for over 80 years every December in Montreal. All of these events are important fund raisers to help finance the Grunt Club’s Good works: donations to Mariners’ House of Montreal, Montreal Children’s Hospital, Hôpital Sainte- Justine and bursaries given annually to the Institut maritime du Québec. This issue is all about the Grunt Club, who they are, how and why they were founded and their mission. We hope you will enjoy reading it. All of the advertisers in this issue are indirectly giving their financial support by advertising in this issue. Canadian Sailings will be donating a percentage of all the advertising dollars back to the Grunt Club to assist with their Good Works. A special thanks to the Grunt Club’s Archivist, Stephen Wray, a Grunt Club Past President, for his invaluable assistance in sourcing the historical pho- tographs and sharing his knowledge of the history of the club with us. Wishing everyone a safe Holiday Season and a better new year in 2021. Canadian Sailings will be back in the new year with a “Tribute to the Toronto Marine Club, as well as our first regular issue of the year in February. We’re looking forward to having all of you back as readers and advertisers. Joyce Hammock, Publisher 8 Canadian Sailings • December 7, 2020

An Interview with Grunt Club President Jeffrey Fisher By Brian Dunn I It was a slam dunk that current Grunt Club president Jeffrey Fisher became a club member about 15 years ago. After all, his father was a past president and he got to know the club through its various activities, including its annual picnic and golf tournament. The Grunt Club’s primary objective is to promote the maritime industry in general and the best interests of the Port of Montreal in par- ticular, through the spirit of fellowship among those associated with the maritime community. “The club represents a fun atmosphere and it’s a good way to meet new people,” explained Mr. Fisher who is also President and CEO of Trans- modal Marketing, a company started by his father in 1980 that buys and sells new and used shipping containers that are mostly modified for stor- age. “I’ve made some good friends at the club. In fact, I met one of my best friends, Jason Tock, at the club, who is also the club’s first vice-president.” December 7, 2020 • Canadian Sailings 13

An Interview with 1st Vice-President Jason Tock By Brian Dunn J Jason Tock is 1st Vice-President of the Grunt Club. He joined in 2008 at the urging of current club President Jeffrey Fisher. “I was going to the annual dinner anyway, so he con- vinced me to become a member,” recalled Mr. Tock who is Senior Management Procurement at Hapag-Lloyd Canada. He was scheduled to take over as Grunt Club president from Mr. Fisher last April, but due to COVID-19, will be handed the reins in April, 2021. “I like the camaraderie and it’s a chance to meet people within your own industry that I never would have met otherwise.” While he enjoys the camaraderie, Mr. Tock would like to see a few tweaks made to make the club even more enjoyable. “The club has been around for a long time and some events are getting long in the tooth. The annual dinner, for example is a sit- down event for about 1,000 people and there is a lot of pomp and Legal Advice Enabling You to Arrive Safely in Port At Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, we possess long-standing experience in maritime law. An Interview with Past President Theodore Blaize By Brian Dunn T Theodore Blaize fondly remembers being hoodwinked into joining the Grunt Club in 1979, but he didn’t mind. “A group of us were at the Baldaquin restaurant in Old Montreal where a lot of people in the shipping industry congregated to chat and enjoy each other’s company,” re- called Mr. Blaize who wears two hats. In addition to being Vice-President Operations, Conterm, a division of Kenmont Terminals, he is also Hon- orary Counsel for Granada in Montreal, his home country. “I met Steve Fisher at Baldaquin (past president of the club and fa- ther of current president Jeffrey Fisher) and he told met to sign a docu- ment he put in front of me and asked for $20. I asked why and he told me not to worry and to just sign the document which I did and suddenly I was a member of the Grunt Club. I have no regrets. I moved here in 1977 and hardly knew anyone and the Grunt Club became part of my family and still is.” December 7, 2020 • Canadian Sailings 21

An Interview with Theresa Cardinal, First Female President By Brian Dunn A As the first female president of the Grunt Club in 2010, Theresa Cardinal offers a different perspective of the inner workings of the storied institution. Interestingly enough, her thoughts and ideas of how to change things to attract new members, don’t waver much from the norm, except in one case - the annual dinner which some would like to see tweaked and become less formal. “I actually enjoy the annual dinner the way it is. All the other events are casual, so it’s nice to dress up. I think it also enhances the club’s repu- tation. I admit there is some repetition in the speeches, but overall, it’s a nice change from other events.” Ms. Cardinal joined the club around 2000 after she was approached to chair the curling event, when she wasn’t actually a member, so she joined. She became a director in 2003. And like other directors, Ms. Cardinal has pretty much chaired all club events and each director “moves up the latter” PROTOS SHIPPING LIMITED HEAD OFFICE TORONTO MONTREAL HALIFAX VANCOUVER TEL: (416) 621-4381 TEL: (514) 866-7799 TEL: (902) 421-1211 TEL: 1 (866) 446-4441 ESTABLISHED & OPERATING INTERNATIONALLY SINCE 1951 CHARTERING prochart@protos.ca TRANSPORTATION LOGISTICS protoslogistics@protos.ca LINER AGENCY sales@protos.ca VESSEL HUSBANDRY protops@protos.ca FIRST IN SERVICE & EFFICIENCY www.protos.ca December 7, 2020 • Canadian Sailings 25
until they eventually become president. “I was glad to have had the experience of the dif- ferent positions and you have to trust each board to do what’s best for the club.” While the club is still male dominated, it has be- come less so and having female members makes it eas- ier to attract other female members, according to Ms. Cardinal. “But I don’t necessarily feel we need to have more female board members. We just need the best candidates. The members always make me feel like one of the guys and I’ve developed some great friendships over the years.” The club has to continue to evolve and the board is always looking for different events to attract new members, while still maintaining tradition. “There was a time when being a member of a club was a way to net- work, but with the advent of social media, it has become less important, making it harder to attract new mem- bers,” she added. The history of The Grunt Club dates back to the early 1930’s when a small number of marine-oriented men de- cided to form a nautical organization primarily to foster the spirit of good fellowship throughout the industry in the Port of Montreal. The name of the Club was al- legedly derived from the grunts and groans which bel- lowed out from the group in response to the suggestions offered by each in attendance. The late Barney Bolan was elected the first President and from those humble beginnings The Grunt Club has grown to over 350 members – all associated in some way with water transportation and who can meet in an atmosphere of friendship and congeniality. The Club held its first general meeting at the Queen’s Hotel on February 2nd, 1934.Those present at that meeting voted unanimously to incorporate The Club under the laws of the Province of Quebec and to secure the necessary charter – the appropriate action being taken by a commit- tee consisting of members who had arranged the group’s early functions. Since that time The Grunt Club has become exceedingly well known to most people concerned with shipping. An ever pop- ular Annual Dinner is held each December at which approximately 1,350 members and Barney Bolan friends attend from all parts of Canada, the United States and even overseas. During the year The Club organizes golf tournaments, a picnic, a children’s Christmas party, a curling bonspiel and a Mariners’ House of Montreal Benefit Luncheon. The Club regularly donates to Mariners’ Queen’s Hotel House of Montreal, Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and Hôpital Sainte-Justine. As well, three bursaries per year are given to L’ Institut maritime du Québec à Rimouski. December 7, 2020 • Canadian Sailings 27

64 Glorious Years Grunt Club Past President, Stewart Cummings (left) with 1995 President Joe Dawson at the 2018 Grunt Club Annual Dinner. Mr. Cummings first attended the annual dinner in 1955 at the Mount Royal Hotel then later at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and more recently at the present venue in the Hilton Bonaventure hotel. Mr. Cummings has accumulated many wonderful memories of Grunt Club activities over the years and commends the Grunt Club for its continuing financial support for deserving recipients, particularly The Mariners’ House of Montreal of which Mr. Cummings is also a Past President. 40 Canadian Sailings • December 7, 2020
The Grunt Club’s support of various institutions is well known. This support has generally been in the form of annual donations and this year is no exception. Our long-standing relationship with the Mariners’ House, who is our largest recipient, to date, has received funds well in excess of $390,000 from the club. For the past 23 years, we are proud and fortunate enough to be able to donate funds, in the form of annual bursaries, to the Institut maritime du Québec à Rimouski. Additionally, with the continuous support of our membership at the various events throughout the year, we have been able to add both of the children’s hospitals to our list of beneficiaries. The Montreal Children’s Hospital and l’Hôpital Sainte-Justine have both received donations in upwards of $20,000 each over the past nine to ten years. The Board of Directors of the Grunt Club is pleased to assist these selected recipients in this noble fashion and will continue to do so with the response from our generous members. The Grunt Club’s Good Works. 2 or 3 pages de‐ pending on how many historic photos we can get of Grunt Presidents presenting cheques to whomever. We should begin with the page from the Grunt entitled “The 1976 Grunt Club Do‐ nates” . Lets retitle this page to “The Grunt Club’s Good Works”. I will ask Jeffrey to update the numbers. We should use the logos of the organizations receiving the donations, but in a more creative fashion than just putting them on the bottom of the page, as in the Grunt. 2013 2018 2011 2013 42 Canadian Sailings • December 7, 2020
