Part Nine Emir ates Air L ine Lift off with TfL’s Craft Club Soar above London’s skyline with our latest edition of TfL’s Craft Club in partnership with Emirates Air Line. We’ve had some inspiring artistic moments while taking to the air on London’s only cable car which crosses the River Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks. We hope this pack inspires you to open that craft box or pencil case, grab a sheet of paper and get creative. In this edition, we explore observational techniques, drawing natural and synthetic materials and then using these skills to draw scenes and settings such as the shore and skyline views that can be seen from the cable car. And if you’re handy with a pair of scissors, you can build your own model of the Emirates Air Line too! Happy crafting and as always please do share your creations with us.
Building up your sketch book It’s good practice to draw in your sketch book daily; this ensures you are building your creative and observational skills. Here is a little exercise to keep those skills fresh. Draw a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock, this can be in their natural state like a stone, piece of wood, or manufactured items like a wooden spoon, fork, coffee pot or glass of water. You could draw a scene where you can find all of these materials. We’ve chosen this one of the Emirates Air Line in North Greenwich.
A view of the shore While visiting the Emirates Air Line draw a picture from the shore of the Thames, include as much detail as possible. If this is not possible, draw the shore of the Thames from the Emirates Air Line picture on page two. Colour in the picture to identify the different materials. • Water = dark blue • Wood = brown • Metal = black • Plastic = orange • Glass = light blue • Rock = grey You could use a variety of materials like pencil, marker, or pen. These are great for getting detail into your sketch as they have fine nibs for drawing thin lines. You can build up your colours by cross-hatching your lines, applying light or heavy pressure to your pen will give you a lighter or darker colour, or use block colour with your markers or colour pencils so you can’t see any of the page below.
