A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Fellow Citizens: This summer program guide is packed full of activities for children, adults, families and seniors. We hope you enjoy looking through it and picking out your favorite ones and be sure to register early because some of them will fill up quickly. There are two big special events coming up over the next few months. The 15th Annual Smith River Fest will be taking place on Saturday, August 19 at the Smith River Sports Complex. There will be a lot of activities for all ages including; mud run, boat race, magic show, live music, food trucks, vendors, free river tubing, petting zoo, free river shuttles, bounce houses, rock climbing wall and more. The 3rd Annual Henry County Fair will take place on September 20 – 23 at Martinsville Speedway. There will be exciting rides, delicious fair food, fun prize games, petting zoo, ground shows and concerts! Thank you for your interest in Henry County Parks & Recreation, and have fun! Classes Camps ROCKET BUILDING ART CAMP Build and launch your very own rocket in Jack Dalton Park. Space will be limited to 10 participants and class is for ages 9 and up. Children will participate in still life drawings, paintings, cartoons, abstract paintings and other forms of art. Pre-registration is required, camp is limited Date/Time July 25th • 9:30 am-12:00 pm to 20 participants. Camp will focus on creativity and expression through art Location: Jack Dalton Park Picnic Shelter and help young artists gain confidence in their art skills. Cost: $15.00 Date/Time: July 18th – 20th • 10:00 am – 12:00 pm KID’S GEOCACHING DAY Location: Henry County Recreation Center Geocaching is a fun outdoor adventure that gets kids out walking and exploring Cost: $35.00 county parks. Hiking applies to the search for “caches” left in the parks. Space is limited to 8 participants and is for ages 8 and up. EXPLORE CAMP Date/Time: June 27th • 9:00 am-12:00 pm Camp is designed to enjoy yourself and learning what you can do outside without Location: Henry County Administration Building being on a playing surface. Hiking, Fishing, Geocaching and a Water Gun battle Cost: $10.00 will all be involved in this outdoor camp. Participants will hike, fish, geocache and participate in a water day. Max 10 participants. CANOE DAY This is an introductory session for anyone wanting to find out what a flatwater Date/Time: June 6th – 9th • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm paddle is like. All trails are considered moderate in difficulty and campers will visit Fieldale Trails, Gravely Park Trails TIE DYE DAY and Doe Run Park Trails. Come out and learn a few patterns to create your own Tie Dye shirt. Participants will need to bring their own white T-shirts and can dye more than Date/Time: July 26th - 28th • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm one shirt. Cost: $ 20.00 Date/Time June 28th /10:00 am – 11:00 am Location: Jack Dalton Shelter GOLF CAMP Cost: $10.00 Camp and instruction will be designed for the golfer who is looking to learn the basics of the golf swing. Never tried golf? No problem. Camp will offer an KIDS IN THE KITCHEN hour of instruction for anyone who has never touched a club. We will explore ways for kids to make smart and easy meals on their own, everything from planning the meal down to washing the dishes. Class will be Date/Time: June 23rd & July 21st • 9:00 am - 10:30 am limited to 10 participants and for kids ages 8-12 years old. Cost: $15.00 per class Date/Time: July 5th - 7th • 10:00 am – 11:30 am MARTINSVILLE MUSTANGS BASEBALL CAMP Location: Henry County Recreation Center Cost: $35.00 Learn the basics of the game from some of the best college players in the country. Drills are designed to help every aspect of the game. INTRO TO ARCHERY Introduction to Archery is a hands-on two hour class that will provide basic Date/Time: June 26th - 29th (5-8 years old) knowledge of archery including archery equipment, shooting, and safety. Class July 24th - 27th (9-13 years old) is limited to 8 participants. Location: Hooker Field Cost: $125.00 Date/Time: July 17th • 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Cost: Jack Dalton Park $10.00 BASKETBALL CAMP Basketball camp will give your basketball player the chance to work on some OUTDOOR SCAVENGER HUNT fundamentals of the game. Our Outdoor Scavenger hunt will take us from park to park as we search for clues that will lead us to our next location. Date/Time: TBD • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Henry County Recreation Center Date/Time: June 20th • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Cost: $25.00 Location: Various Parks (Bus leaves from Administration Building) Cost: $10.00 TENNIS CAMP Camp will focus on fundamentals while implementing fun drills and games KIDS FISHING DAY intended to peak a player's interest and motivation. Tennis is a great lifetime Come join us as we offer a beginners course to a sport that can be enjoyed for an entire lifetime. Participants will learn the very basics of fishing from baiting sport to introduce your kids to. a hook to casting on their own. Pre-registration is required and space is limited to 10 participants. Dates/Time: June 12th-14th • 9:00 am - 11:30 am Location: Collinsville Jaycee Park Tennis Courts Date/Time: June 16th • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Cost: $50.00 Location: Riverview Park (Bus leaves from Administration Building) Cost: Free FOOTBALL CAMP Football Camp will give your player the chance to work on some football skills. CREEK CRAWL Explore the shallows of a local creek and find out what type of creatures live Dates/Time: June 19th-21st • 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm @ Magna Vista High School in the sand, mud and under rocks! Learn about the importance of macro invertebrates and their amazing life cycle. Be sure to wear boots or shoes you July 24th & 25th • 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm @ Bassett High School don’t mind getting wet and muddy. This program is great for all ages. Guided by an elite 4-H tech STEM team, they will have fun, advance Cost: $10.00 their skills, fast with Scratch Coding, java and join a community of 500,000 aspiring innovators. Ages 8-12 years old. CHILDREN’S CRAFT CLASS Participants will decorate summer themed crafts. Space is limited to 10 children. The BRSOC is HELGRAMITE HUSTLE 5K MUD RUN ideal for anyone looking to have an outgoing and active Ready to Hustle? In this muddy 5k you will navigate a series of mud pits, lifestyle. Time/Date: May 20th, June 17th, July 15th, August 19th 3:00 p.m - 7:00 pm Location: Downtown Bassett Cost: FREE GARDEN TO GO The Garden to Go program will give someone a chance to grow a personal size garden. Each kit will include tomato seeds, squash seeds, cucumber seeds and watermelon seeds. Each kit will also include a bucket and some dirt so everyone can get started right away. Time/Date: Available now Location: HCPR Office Cost: $20.00 Family Activities SMITH RIVER FEST - AUGUST 19TH Run, paddle and bike your way to fun at Smith River Fest! Held annually along the Smith River in Henry County, Virginia, this event is truly a celebration of all things associated with the Smith River and our great outdoors. Ride the river, browse vendors and challenge yourself in the Helgramite Hustle 5K Mud Run. The Smith River is 45 miles of scenic beauty flowing through our community from the base of Philpott Dam in Bassett, Virginia down to Eden, North Carolina where it meets the Dan River. Alongside the river and throughout Martinsville & Henry County are nearly 20 miles of shared-use trails that make up the Smith River Trail System. Paddlers will love the variety that the Smith River offers from calm floats to class I/II rapids. 50+ Club HENRY COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION PROGRAM... SENIOR SUMMER BOWLING LEAGUE Connecting Seniors through Fellowship, Fitness & Fun! The Senior Summer Bowling League is open to all adults age 50 and above.
