Telling the Rice Story – DRAFT Language Rice helps students reach their full potential: in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. This is what parents told us in a recent survey about Rice. They also said... The education is excellent. It's supported by a strong academic culture, shared common goal of college preparation, and teachers that help find student strengths. [This excellence is recognized by colleges across the country through admissions to prestigious schools and academic scholarships. Graduates are well prepared and ready for college.] Students get involved at Rice. Most play sports (80%), which gets most of the attention; but many students are involved in other activities, like music, drama, and scholars bowl. The vast majority (90%+) of students are involved in some activity outside the classroom. Parents like Rice's community/ family environment. Size is one factor, but also the sense of mission and enjoyment that is shared by all: students, teachers and staff. It's that sense of community that fosters a caring, safe environment, allowing students to grow and develop to reach their full potential. Service is an integral part of the experience: Freshman through Seniors. Students are required to give back to their communities, which may include hosting meals at the Salvation Army, teaching CCD classes, or volunteering at the Polar Express. One of the misconceptions is regarding tuition. Most parents of public school students think Rice costs $2,000 to $4,000 more than it does. And that does not consider 40% of students get some financial assistance that averages $2,500. In the survey, 97% of parents said they would recommend Rice to others. The 3%? They too recommend Rice, but suggest first learning whether it's a good fit for the family: will Rice help their student reach full potential? The admissions staff at Rice can help answer that question for you. They sponsor an Open House, parent breakfasts, information on the website, Shadow Days (where prospective students spend a day at the school) - as well as one-on-one meetings. 11
