JAMES William Jay Gaynor, the Man Who Bought Clinton Haven Smith’s House and Farm in St. James in 1905 by Bradley Harris, Smithtown Historian I have been writing about the great estates that once existed in St. James. My last article on this subject dealt with Clinton Haven Smith, the man who owned the house and farm in St. James that was originally built by Joe L. G. Smith in 1845. Clinton Smith and his wife spent summers in the house until the summer of 1897 when Clinton Smith’s Na- tional Guard unit was activated and sent to Cuba to fight in the Spanish American War.
