OSHER MONDAY continued U.S. in the 1970’s The Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. #OSHR 6000 001 Time: 1 – 3 p.m. Dates: Mondays, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25, Mar. 4 (6 weeks) This course will examine the decade of the 1970s in the U. S. and will suggest answers to some of the key questions about that period. Why did the Vietnam Class Size: 35 participants War end with U. S. withdrawal? Inside the USSR and Russia – Ch. 2 Instructor: Hal Smith taught history for 40 years at the University of Houston- #OSHR 6020 001 Victoria, the University of Montana, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City and was made a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain for his Chapter 1 was presented in 2017-18. Trained by the CIA and DIA, he has extensive personal experience as a Cold War human intelligence collector and all-source analyst. Using art and architectural examples from a wide range of time periods and numerous regions of the world, we will discover how cultural context differentiates artworks that are otherwise similar in content, and how art historical context and content can reveal a connectedness of peoples around the globe. Themes will include: Nature and the Land, Portraiture and Self-Portraiture, Gender and Family Stories, Social Commentaries, Sacred Spaces, and The Process of Art Making. Instructor: Margeret Sharkoffmadrid is a part-time history faculty member at Front Range Community College and a consultant for the College Board’s national AP art history program. This course will not focus on the detailed history or politics, but will instead introduce the humanities—the philosophy, religion, art, and music—of a region that too often is only considered in terms of conflict. It will introduce the cultural and technological firsts of the Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Persian empires, as well as the achievements of the Umayyad, Abbasid, Moor, Seljuk Turk, and Ottoman Turk empires up to WWII. We’ll examine bias; the use of anonymous sources; the difference between opinion pieces and news articles; the dismal decline of local media; libel law; and how the media (and Trump) could improve.
