BILL KEMP Engrosser’s Script About bill @brotherbill55 | facebook.com/billkemp | www.billscalligraphy.com Bill Kemp is a lettering artist, but has been told by his mentor, Mr. William Lilly, that he is an Engrosser. Bill has been practicing his craft for over 40 years (don’t wish to sound too old). Pointed pen is his true love, but also does broad-edge lettering, too. Engrosser’s Script is a script that has really been his main focus for many years. Bill has studied with instructors including the late Mr. Dick Jackson, the late Ms. Gwen Weaver, Master Penman Mr. Mike Kecseg and his mentor Senior Master Penman Mr. William Lilly over the course of his career. The main path of his studies has been with Mr. Lilly for the past 18 years, and he completed his Certificate of Merit in Engrosser’s Script with Mr. Lilly in November 2015. He served as the President of IAMPETH from 2012- INSTRUCTOR BIOS & CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 2013, has taught at many of the IAMPETH conferences, taught around the country, and teaches at Castle in the Air in Berkeley, California, 3 to 4 times a year for the past 18 years (except in 2020 where we all have learned to use Zoom as a teaching vehicle and stay at home to teach). He also runs his small calligraphy business in Albuquerque, New Mexico where his clients keep him busy and he gets paid to practice. Engrosser’s Script - All skill levels This class is for both beginners and students who wish to refresh themselves with the basics. Known as both Roundhand and/ or Engrossing Script, this will be a class to provide the basics and true fundaments of this beautiful script. Learning how to manipulate the pointed pen to make the down strokes thick and hairline upward strokes is the focus of this grateful script. Using the Zanerian Manual and the teachings of my mentor Senior Master Penman Mr. William Lilly, we will focus on the material referenced in the manual and what I have learned from Mr. Lilly as we learn to write this script. The morning will focus on the basic strokes for the lower case to learn those letters. The afternoon will shift to the capital letters and combining them with the lower case letters for appropriate spacing. Class supplies I would suggest an oblique pen holder or some may wish to use a straight pen holder; suggest a Nikko G nib or Gillott 1068A (experienced individuals can use their favorite nib); McCaffery’s ink (any color) or your favorite ink used with the pointed pen (other suggested inks would be Palace Moon, Sumi, Walnut Ink or Old World Ink); since there will be a limited amount of guide sheets in your handouts, an alternative paper would be the grid-square paper (5 squares per inch) pads from Rhodia or Clairefontaine tablets (which is excellent paper for the pointed pen). All of the supplies here could be used in other classes. 14
BOB HURFORD Fun With Split Nib About Bob Bob Hurford is Editor of the IAMPETH Penman’s Journal and IAMPETH Historian. He has been a calligrapher and graphic artist for more than 40 years with proficiency in a variety of alphabets and the art of offhand flourishing. He has spent an equal amount of time in the graphic arts and printing industries. Though proficient with the computer, particularly Photoshop and InDesign, he also remembers the days before computers when cut-and-paste was the order of the day. Bob is a penmanship historian having lectured on the History of American Penmanship and Illuminated Manuscripts and has demonstrated handwriting to many groups throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. INSTRUCTOR BIOS & CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Fun with split nib – intermediate A split nib is handled exactly as one would handle a broad-edged pen. The split nib, sometimes called a scroll pen, creates outline alphabets. With the split nib, a letter becomes a contour drawing with only lines on the outside while the center has nothing in it. Not yet, anyway. The fun part of an outline letter is what you can do around the letter and inside the letter. The only limitation is your imagination. Fun, interesting alphabets are possible with the split nib as are a myriad of other ideas. You will learn the cornering technique that can add some interesting flourishes to any letter. The alphabet below is just a small sample of what we will cover. Class supplies We will be using the Mitchell Scroll Writer #10 and #60. These pens are both two millimeters in width, producing two lines. The #10 has the thick side on the right, the #60 has the thick side on the left. Your choice. We will also use the 3.8mm Parallel Pen Scroll (green cap) with the split nib. All of these pens are available from John Neal Books and Paper & Ink Arts. Guide sheets will be supplied for all pens. PAPER: Bring paper through which guidelines may be seen. Canson Marker Layout is a good choice. INK: Mitchell Scroll Writers are standard dip pens so bring appropriate inks in any color you like. If you plan to use the Scroll Parallel Pen, you will likely need four cartridges in your favorite color. PENCILS: We will only spend a few minutes on the double pencil. (The day will be packed!) If you want to try the double pencil, bring two sharpened pencils and two or three rubber bands to bind them. 15

A former Lettering Artist for Hallmark Cards, Michael served as former President Ronald Reagan’s calligrapher after his presidency, and for two years was the calligrapher for the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the founder of the Spencerian Monument for American Handwriting and the Spencerian Saga Workshop Program of which he served as Director for 26 years. A former President of IAMPETH, Michael founded our Association’s Master Penman Program of which he was Director for 15 years, and is widely respected for his abilities as a Master Penman and INSTRUCTOR BIOS & CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Instructor. An inductee into IAMPETH’s Book of Honor, Michael remains active in the Lettering Arts field and his penmanship can be found in personal and institutional collections around the world. He is the author of several books on American penmanship, now considered as classics in the genre. He is currently working on his latest book, Sull’s Manual for Pointed Pen Flourishing, and his Ornamental Penmanship Correspondence Course. ADVANCED ORNAMENTAL PENMANSHIP - Advanced The goals of acquiring an advanced level of skill in Ornamental Penmanship include gaining a thorough knowledge of standard and alternate letterforms for both Lowercase and Capitals, plus the magic ingredients of mastering the manipulation of Curvature and Negative Space. Knowing these elements - Curvature and Negative Space, opens up endless possibilities for the penmanship artist. The ability to spontaneously envision directional paths of curvature, plus being able to overlap, intersect, parallel, and spiral curves, as well as determining balance in a composition, create degrees of contrast and add a sense of emotion throughout a written text. These skills enable the artist to basically go anywhere on a sheet of paper and turn a type-written text into a most expressive example of visual language. These are the hallmarks of superior ability in the realm of Ornamental Penmanship. Our class will focus on the fundamental techniques to understand and manipulate Curvature, both with letterforms and flourishing. I will explain and demonstrate how to achieve the spiraling of letters that I refer to as “Super Twisters”, the methods to artistically flourish letterforms, and how to create the complex patterns for what I call “Masterpiece Flourishing”. These are all related by the concepts of Curvature and Negative Space. I will also explain the techniques of creating Spencerian Monograms; these, too, are related as mentioned above. There will be a class project. Please Note: this is an Advanced Level Class; participants must already posses a competent degree of skill in pointed pen lettering; either Spencerian, Copperplate, or Engrosser’s Script. Class supplies Oblique penholder with at least one extra point. Your favorite ink for pointed pen writing. #2 pencil, or mechanical pencil. Plastic or vinyl eraser. 2 colored pencils (a different color in each pencil). Graph/grid paper; prefer either 1/4” or1/8” grid. Lined paper for practice, such as lined Rhodia, Clairefontaine, or 24lb. quality inkjet or laser paper on which you have lined with your computer. 23

He specializes in Spencerian Script and is known worldwide for his ornate signature designs. He has studied both independently and under some of the very best penmen, including IAMPETH Master Penmen Michael Sull, Harvest Crittenden, and Jake Weidmann. In addition to his penmanship practice, Michael has pioneered the technique of debossing and hand foiling calligraphic designs onto leather items. He is passionate about teaching and sharing his love for the process of learning. INSTRUCTOR BIOS & CLASS DESCRIPTIONS THE ART OF MOVEMENT WRITING – ALL SKILL LEVELS Traditionally, Spencerian Script & Ornamental Penmanship were written using rapid motions. This style of movement writing was how they managed to create the unbelievably beautiful specimens we now study. In this class we will start from square one and train our muscles to flow graciously from form to form driven by the larger muscles of our upper arm and back, rather than using our fingers to draw out the letters. When combined with a rhythmic flow, this will give our writing a beautiful and uniform appearance. From there we will go further and explore accent flourishes, designed with our movement in mind to best add character and an artistic flare to our writing. Having an understanding of Spencerian or Ornamental Penmanship will help greatly in this class. The learning curve is steep, but since we start from the basics, this class can be suitable for any level (though challenging for beginners). Students will be taught to execute Spencerian & Ornamental Penmanship using new muscles and movements. Topics will cover use of muscles, forearm and whole arm movement, rhythm, line integrity, oval symmetry, and accent flourishing. Class supplies Oblique pen holder; flexible nib of choice (i.e. Leonardt Principal EF, Gillott 303) [NOTE: Nikko G and the like will not be flexible enough for this class]; ink of choice (something smooth flowing like walnut or iron gall -- Mike uses walnut most of the time); blank paper of choice (i.e. Rhodia pad, or similar); paperclips to hold guide sheets. 24
