OCTOBER 2021- MEMBER NEWS On an acreage where Everett Thomas and his friends held Sunday rodeos, ATV riders will be allowed to challenge their ability across soap weed roughened prairies, and through pine dotted canyons. Hunters can test their skills against mule and whitetail deer, antelope, bison, Merriam turkeys, varmints, upland birds, and fishing adventures. Elk hunters will be taken to areas in the Hat creek, and Ash creek units where the elk population has exploded in the past few years, and the trophy animals are abundant. While the last rays of a gorgeous sunset slip beneath the prairie grasses a real home cooked meal will be waiting. In the evenings Ed and Melvin Oldaker, may be willing to share a few stories and some adult refreshments. The old Thomas Ranch now owned by Everett's neighbors and friends, Ed Robbin Oldaker, will provide a once in a lifetime experience that can be duplicated year after year. The gold days of Autumn are upon us. For those of us that enjoy the outdoors and seek the best days to be afield or on the water, everyday from today through the first of December is the best day to be alive and outdoors. The birds are flying, the waterfowl is migrating, the deer season rut is intensifying, and fish are aggressively feeding, making the time invested outdoors the best of the season. Some of us lay our head on the pillow thinking of the upcoming holidays. For me, every night is the same – dream about pheasants cackling and big bucks rutting as I toss and turn trying to figure out which stand to sit or which field to run with my trusted GSP Maggie. All of us have our honey holes and family traditions. Now is the time to enjoy them and make memories for future generations. While we frolic in the fields and dance on the water, be mindful of the danger that lurks in the shadows – the anti-hunter. Their quest to shut down our industry is never ending. We must be mindful of that and share our experiences outdoors in a positive and engaging way. The propaganda and poison spilled by anti-hunters can be quickly squelched with sportsman like behavior, clean kills and photographs, stories of companionship. Passion, conservation and education will overcome any vicious misrepresentation from our adversaries. As the guns of autumn fill our game bags, remember to leave the forest and fields cleaner than when you arrived. Respect the game and the chase that you enjoy. www.sciflint.org
Take a new person, young or old with you and let them share in the wonder of what nature has to offer. The thrill of the kill is the least of our desires. It is the ability to match our skills with the beasts of the wild that makes the hunt more invigorating. Investing quality time in developing more habitat that harbors more game makes for a more enjoyable experience. The future is in our hands, hearts and minds. Share the magic of the season with friends, family and beginners to keep our tradition alive and prospering. Take a kid to the field and play it forward for the next generation. When you succeed, share your success with all of us with stories photos and advice so we can enjoy each other’s success. Our viability as a club depends on all of us to recruit new members and play our trips forward for generations to come. Bring your adventure to life in our chapter communication and awards by sharing your experience with us. Happy Hunting this fall. Best of luck to all! John Kupiec www.sciflint.org

MEMBER NEWS WOMEN’S PHEASANT HUNT September 25, 2021 On September 25th the Flint Regional Chapter of SCI partnered with Genesee County Pheasants Forever to sponsor a Women's Pheasant Hunt for 20 women at the Muzzy Pheasant Farm in Corunna Michigan. There was a morning and an afternoon hunt that started with a presentation on SCI and Pheasants Forever and how our organizations are working to promote and protect hunting in our county. Next the women learned firearms and hunting safety and the rules they had to follow as they went into the field. A training session followed that saw the women hunters actually firing at flying clay targets that simulated the game they would be going after. They were then split up into two groups of 5 and each group was assigned a guide/dog handler and a mentor to help them as they took to the fields. Morning rain made the conditions for hunting less than ideal, but the women persevered and were successful. On their return to the Muzzy’s Lodge, they enjoyed pulled pheasant sandwiches to satisfy the appetites worked up on the hunt. After eating, a discussion of what they had learned was held which flowed into a session where the women hunters were shown how to prepare the pheasants for cooking. They then went to work on the birds they had harvested; cleaned them and dressed them for transport home. This was a valuable lesson because it gave these ladies a chance to see what goes into converting an animal into meat to be cooked. They saw that there is more to it than just buying white plastic trays with a cellophane covering. Everyone left the event well fed, well educated, inspired, empowered and ready to get back into the field. www.sciflint.org
MEMBER NEWS WOMEN’S PHEASANT HUNT The Muzzy staff worked diligently to provide a first class experience and a successful hunt. Many thanks to the pros and our dear friends at Muzzy Pheasant Farm for hosting us. Our thanks goes out to Pat Okopny, Scott Maxson, and Jay Blair and his daughters Katie and Christie from Pheasants Forever and Carl Griffin and Karly Rolls from the Flint Regional Chapter of SCl for making this hunt a success. www.sciflint.org
MEMBER NEWS “WOMEN’S SOUTH ZONE OPENER DUCK HUNT” Saturday October 9th, five ladies joined SCI-Flint for a Women’s Duck Hunt on the season opener. The ladies were bright eyes and bushy tailed, meeting at 5:30am to head to their hunting spot in Clio, MI. We had a variety of experience- Callie was even a first time shooter who did great!! The ladies sat in reeds surrounding two small ponds. As the sun came up, the ducks started to come in and the ladies got some great shooting in! Guides Mike Dickerson and Del Tanner did a great job coaching the ladies on hunting safety, duck hunting 101, and much more. The ladies harvested a number of beautiful drake wood ducks. After cleaning up from the hunt, the ladies were treated to a delicious brunch, which included homemade biscuits and goose gravy! We concluded the event with a lesson on how to clean the birds and everyone was sent home with recipe cards to guide them in cooking the meat we harvested. We look forward to getting into the field with these ladies again and wish them luck as they continue duck hunting this fall! www.sciflint.org
MEMBER HUNTS with SCI FLINT PTARMIGAN PSALM By: John Kupiec The Alaskan peninsula is filled with beautiful sights and sounds like big Brown Bear, Wolf, Red Fox, Alaska Yukon Moose, Porcupine, Migratory Birds and ultimately, the Alaska Barren Ground Caribou. These creatures are the largest of the five caribou in North America. On a recent trip to hunt Caribou at Nelson Lagoon with Rod Schuh from R & R Outfitters, I was able to witness the great north filled with many of God’s creatures up close and personal every day. All provided pure entertainment and moments of awe. The most prolific was the Ptarmigan, indigenous to the tundra and cold of Alaska. These birds have a repertoire of sounds that are unique and unmistakable. The clucking, cooing, and barking at times sounds like laughing. These birds were in mid foliage change and were everywhere we camped and stalked the big horns of the Southern Alaska Peninsula herd of caribou. It was almost as if they were surrounding us to assist in finding that trophy of a lifetime, providing free guide service. Wesley Snipes was my guide on this trip--not the one of acting fame, but talented none the less. We flew via float plane from the main camp at Hoodoo Lodge out on to the tundra and set up a spike camp along a small lake about ten miles from Nelson Lagoon. The first three days were eventful, spotting lots of game. Approximately 50 Caribou per day were spotted with several shot opportunities at nice bulls, but not the one I was in search of. We had a close encounter with a nine-foot brown bear eating crowberries, several porcupines and two fox that seemed to find our hideout on different knobs each day. They showed no worries and entertained Wes and I as we glassed from a distance to see if we could find a “boo” worthy of a chase. We did not and Rod came out and relocated us about six miles closer to the ocean in even more classic tundra ground minus the heavy alder patches and willow flats. On day four we witnessed Pavlov, the famous volcano emitting ash from the upper caldera (rim) which was a bonus! We mapped out a plan and hiked north about two miles to gain the highest vantage point to search for our elusive trophy. After sitting for about two hours from daybreak to 9:30, Wes and I decided to circle a www.sciflint.org
MEMBER HUNTS with SCI FLINT PTARMIGAN PSALM By: John Kupiec boomerang shaped lake and head to another high point to glass. We hiked about a mile and half and upon reaching the summit of the hill Wes stopped and crouched down crawling to the top to glass below. He spotted four bulls in a group around a smaller watering hole eating lichen. The bulls were completely unaware of our presence. The initial distance we ranged the caribou at was 698 yards. The bulls continued to feed, with our vantage point safe due the wind direction quartering to us at approximately 30 knots (34-35 mph). As they continued to eat and meandered our way, I ranged them at between 297 and 305 yards. The target bull was on the right of me furthest away. I told Wes I was comfortable taking a shot at that distance, so I climbed behind the Swarovski DS scope and dialed it up to about 8 power. The range on the scope confirmed my bino distance at 298 yards. I settled the crosshairs behind the front shoulder and squeezed off a round. The shot was true and connected exactly where I aimed. The big bull hunched up and turned around stumbling. I sent another round toward him and put him on the ground. We were both ecstatic at the sight of him dropping. We quickly gathered our backpacks and headed toward the big bull. As we walked up on him, we both looked at each other in amazement as he was much larger than we thought. He has mass, big bez, long points on top and best of all, double shovels! The beautiful mahogany-colored antlers were offset by the white winter cape and makes for one impressive trophy. Fresh back straps for dinner were on the menu after the work of cleaning, quartering and hauling the bull several miles back to camp. The success of this trip more than made up for the first two attempts where I ate tag soup twice. This hunt was scheduled for six days, and we connected on day four. The food was outstanding, gear was first class, and my guide definitely knew this species. If high quality Barren Ground Caribou is on your bucket list, I would highly recommend Rod and his crew. www.sciflint.org
MEMBER HUNTS with SCI FLINT PTARMIGAN PSALM By: John Kupiec This trophy marks the 26th out of the 29 North American Big Game animals that will adorn my game room. It also completes my slam of Caribou. Some of the meat will be featured at our next Wild Game dinner and fundraiser for the SCI Flint Chapter. This fall, be safe, aim small and play it forward for the next generation! www.sciflint.org

MEMBER NEWS MICHIGAN CRANE POPULATION Crane populations are at their highest point since we started surveys. We kill about 1,000 per year for crop damage and they are left in the field to rot. Other states that do have a season, kill only around 500 per year. In short, there is no scientific reason not to have a limited crane season in Michigan. Please visit the below link for the full story. https://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/Crane_Oct2021_738259_7.pdf A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his own conscience, rather than that of onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact. -Aldo Leopold www.sciflint.org
