Welcome to Sister Act If you want the world to listen, stand up tall and proud. Let ‘em know what they been missin’ and turn that volume up loud! -Deloris Van Cartier Welcome to Sister Act where we are loud and proud to be producing this joyful romp of a musical! Laugh out loud funny, heartwarming, and full of music that will fill your soul, it is no wonder that this show is based on a movie that is still considered one of the top comedies of all time. Now thirty years old, the film came out in a time many of us who lived through felt was incredibly complex. Hugely pivotal changes had just occurred on the world scene – Apartheid in South Africa ended and Nelson Mandela walked free; the Berlin Wall had just come down; the U.S.S.R. was no more and the Cold War was officially pronounced over. The first text-based web browser was made public and accessed by millions. In the US, music like Hip Hop and Grunge dominated. The first African American female astronaut went to space. But this time also witnessed the Rodney King beating and aftermath. It was a time of American excess. Americans grappled in discourse over guns, womens’ rights, gay rights, culture and politics. We contended with difficulties that could have been pulled from today’s headlines. Sister Act – like all great comedies – responded to the drama of the time and sought to unify people and bring lightheartedness, spirit, and liveliness to us all. This is why this musical is still such fun today! Sister Act deliciously stands up tall and proud in the face of difficulties and disparities and celebrates the growth that emerges from true friendship when we find acceptance and a shared voice. Let’s “let ‘em know what they been missin’” and sing out loud! As always, THANK YOU for coming out to support live theatre! We have a fantastic 2022- 23 season ahead. Please stop by our sales table at intermission or scan a QR code to go to our website and subscribe today! Our subscribers are CRITICAL supporters at NCT – we need you now more than ever as we push forward into this unknown pandemic-affected era. Please, consider a tax-deductible donation and subscription today – time to “join the choir” at NCT! You’ll access the best seats, the best prices, and the best benefits of joining today. A Note from the Director Hey Friend, I’m beyond moved to be back in my hometown making my NCT directorial debut! It was 1997 and my birthday present was seeing the National Tour of Cats in the very seats you are sitting in at Memorial Auditorium. My life was forever changed as that night made room for my dreams. People ask me all of the time how I made it to Broadway from Raleigh, NC. I say: education, family, and faith. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Kirstie Spadie at North Carolina Dance Institute, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and the great emphasis our state puts on arts education. Your dream is not limited by your zip code. The day NYC shut down in March 2020 I was here at NCT preparing to open Memphis. I thought we’d only be home for 2 weeks. Then again our original plan for Sister Act was delayed because of a variant. But I believe with my entire being that delay is not denial. As Celie will tell us next season during The Color Purple, “and I’m here”. I am forever grateful to Eric Woodall for believing in me and trusting our creative team with this story at such an important time in our country. He has been a dream of a light to me since I moved to NYC in 2009 and to do this show together is the greatest honor. This musical is about gatekeepers making space for others to be their authentic selves. In many ways there is a Deloris Van Cartier in all of us or a Deloris that we’ve kept out of our spaces. I believe we came through a pandemic to examine our biases and to actively engage in making new seats at the table. My greatest hope is that the transformative power of kindness, inclusivity, and courage activates within you the next time you meet a Deloris. You might even get to do it under a disco ball. This show is dedicated to the legacy of the BIPOC queer people who created disco and my friend Darius Barnes who made space for my dreams for 13 years. This twirl is for you.
