05 NYP Network Auto-Inflated Life Jacket with Depth Sensing Device for Mindef-SOTAC T he School of Engineering (Electronics) [SEG(E)] and the Special Operations Tactical Centre (SOTAC) of MINDEF have jointly designed and developed a programmable pressure-activated flotation trigger device. Installed in auto-inflated life jackets used by commandos from the Singapore Army, the device automatically senses the water depth level and triggers a firing mechanism to allow a gas canister to inflate the life jacket as soon as it reaches a pre-set depth. Current life jackets are either inflated upon contact with water or by manually pulling an activation cord Project team members (from left): Mr Steven Ng Wei Hsien, attached to the firing mechanism.
