RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 1 OF 11 GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT PRESIDENT I would like to begin with thanking the Riverview Park District Leadership Team for all of their support this past year as I served as your president. With the realignment of districts in the Iowa Conference, I was new to the district and had a lot to learn. Thank you to all for your patience and “umbrella of Grace” this past year. The district annual meeting was the first time that I had been in person with most of the team, and it was great to see them in the flesh. I enjoy the convenience of Zoom meetings, but every so often we need to be in person. It was also great to see so many attending our district annual meeting on September 11. There were 60 members attending, either in person or by Zoom, representing 23 units. In addition to the business meeting we heard from District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Heecheon H. Jeon, and from Missy Reams from Hawthorn Hill/Bidwell Riverside. Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Thompson officiated at our closing communion service. It appears that we are heading towards what will be the new normal. Many of you are in the process of planning for next year. I would encourage you to use resources that are provided by United Methodist Women as much as possible. If you do not yet have the Program Resources book for 2021-2022, I encourage you to order it. The theme is appropriate for the times we are in and the programs are well planned. (My circle has already used this for our September and October meetings.) In addition, the Iowa Conference UMW commissioned two videos – one for the district annual meetings and one for the conference annual meeting. Both are excellent. You can find the links to these at the Iowa Conference website – go to “Ministries” then click on the UMW box; you will find the links under “Videos”. They are available for your use. Thanks to all of you for your continued support of United Methodist Women at your local church, the district, conference and national level. You are important to the vision of “Turning faith, hope and love in action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world.” Blessings to all of you, Sharon Boen, President Boen.sharon@gmail.com / 515-231-3316 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT ANNUAL MEETING COORDINATOR / VICE PRESIDENT (appointed) I want to thank everyone who helped with achieving a first...a working hybrid annual meeting with new to us technology and a wonderful group of people. We had 13 churches represented in person and three more virtual with about 50 people in attendance. Next year's conference place has not been determined. If you want to host and have live-stream at your church let me know. From Texas, Blessings Marilyn Burch, nuhope57@msn.com / 515-314-6638 Lamentations 3:22-24
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 2 OF 11 GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT SECRETARY/ ACTING COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR It was great to see so many of you in person at our Annual Meeting in Carlisle on September 11. It has been my honor to serve you, although it was often challenging to be serving in two offices at the same time this past year. I’m very grateful to Sherry for stepping up to be our District Secretary next year. It seems that two of our officers will be serving in a new office this year while continuing to serve in their previous office where they have served their term limit, since there were no new nominations for either Membership Nurture and Outreach or Mission Coordinator for Education & Interpretation. I can attest that by serving, you get to better know the wonderful, dedicated women who are serving our United Methodist Women for our District. If you haven’t already, please submit your unit’s list of 2022 officers to me as soon as possible so that we can continue to keep you all informed. Please ensure that the email addresses are accurate and legible and include the name of your Church on the form. My information is included on the form. I have decided to give our Riverview Park District Newsletter a new look and hope you will enjoy it. Hope you all have a blessed holiday season. Linda Njamfa lnjamfa@aol.com / 515-250-9948 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT TREASURER Welcome to November – this year has gone by so quickly. I hope all of you have been able to meet in person, by now. We set our District Pledge the same as last year - $50,000. I am sure we will surpass this and give more than we pledged! Can't wait to see our end of the year results! Each of our Units understands how great it is to give to Missions. We have many Designated giving areas: Our 5-Star giving – Pledge, Special Mission Pin, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. Next is the Magazine Fund: Each Unit is asked to give $1 for the purchase of the Response magazine for Deaconess living in retirement homes. We have some fairly new Designated giving opportunities: the Legacy Fund: in 2019 United Methodist Women celebrated 150 years of mission work. To honor these ladies who went before us, we now have an endowment fund which will lay the financial foundation for future generations of United Methodist Women. All the money given to the Legacy Fund goes straight to Missions. We also give at least $1 per member to Shesler Hall, Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell Riverside (all Iowa based National institutions) and Mission u. In 2012 the Diversity Fund was set up to reach out to younger women and ethnic groups to defray the cost of registration fees and expenses, enabling more to attend Mission u. Plus, Undesignated giving: some Units choose to give money to a special project they are interested in. In December, I will be sending each 5-Star Unit their Certificate plus their Pledge form for 2023 that needs to be returned by May. PLEASE also, have all your end of the year monies in to me by December 10, after that, any giving you send will go into the 2022 business.
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 3 OF 11 Thank you for all your cooperation this year. If you have any questions, please call me. I want to be sure you have received your Special Mission Recognition Pins and all the Gif to Mission cards you have ordered. National is still sending you your pins, but I am sending your certificates (which will probably come much sooner than the pin). If you do not receive your pin or the cards you have ordered in a timely manner or you receive a duplicate – please give me a call and we’ll find out why! It has been a good year, and I am so happy most of us have been able to get together in person. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas and may 2022 bring good health and happiness to each of you! Grace and Blessings to you all, De Streeter 5105 NE 23rd Ave, Apt 1307 Pleasant Hill, IA 50327 streeter1022@outlook.com / 515-418-3932 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SOCIAL ACTION I have been keeping in touch with our Iowa Senators and Third District Representative. Here is a link if you are interested in following them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_representatives_from_Iowa If you wish more information, send me an email and I will help you out. I have been keeping up with our UMW issues, as well. This month I was taking an online Laity course, so I was not able to take part in the latest online events. Now that my schedule has cleared, I hope to take part in the upcoming events. Our two ongoing endeavors are Climate Justice and Criminalization of Communities of Color & Mass Incarceration. You can find links and information here: https://www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/action Enjoy your holidays and I wish you all a blessed New Year! Anita Bailey annmarie4765@gmail.com / 641-218-4699 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 "So I conclude that, first, there is nothing better for a man than to be happy and to enjoy himself as long as he can; and second, that he should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of his labors, for these are gifts from God." The Holidays are approaching quickly which include Holiday dinners, desserts and candies. My favorite time of year! Many of us have been told by our health care professional, and perhaps others: "You need to lose some weight." This tends to make us associate food with guilt instead of pleasure.
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 4 OF 11 Rachel Marie Stone, author of Eat With Joy, states in her book: I've heard, "Oh, I shouldn't", and talk of fat and calories and diets between bites of dessert more times that I can count. An alternative might be gratitude for God's good gift of food and an attentive pleasure to all the sensory delights that go along with satisfying our hunger. Joyful eating starts with an attempt to recognize food, and ourselves, in light of God our Creator and Christ our Bread of Life. Food is a sign of God's love----and there is no room for fear in love, for love casts out fear. Accept food like a child, then ---joyfully, with pleasure and gratitude. Food connects us to others---other people and other creatures---in millions of ways, some visible, many hidden. And food connects us all to God. Here is a prayer from the book Eat With Joy you may use for your Holiday dinners: We thank you, God of creation, For the food that nourishes bodies. Give us also that food which compels us to do your will And to share the fruits of creation among all; Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen. I hope you all enjoy your Holiday dinners and treats! Let us eat in joyful moderation and enjoy all God has made for us. Let us share our bounty with others. The book, Eat With Joy by Rachel Marie Stone, was on the UMW Reading List for Spiritual Growth in 2015. It is a very beneficial book for those who find food a source of angst and anxiety. If you would like to borrow my book, contact me. Lou Ann Willis louannwillis@yahoo.com / 641-943-2492 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP NURTURE AND OUTREACH COORDINATOR Have you heard that there is change coming to UMW? If you attended District Annual conference, you saw a video about it. These changes are based on Mark 2:21-22 about new wineskins. I have watched two courses about these changes, and following are highlights from the videos: "UMW is ready to make new wine in new wineskins. This process started with conversations, surveys, and research of 24,000 women. The three reasons for change are: open doors for better blessings, multiplying for growth and everything Good comes from changing. The core work that UMW has been doing for over 150 years will be unchanged. We answered the call of God, showed up to get things done, and have been spiritual working women. Our needs are changing and the communities we serve are changing and we need to be more effective. Some of the changes will be: 1) There will be multiple pathways in membership: National membership model - details coming in future video And a virtual way
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 5 OF 11 2) Local strategy - new programs and ways of meeting 3) Thrive Newsletter - watch for it 4) Soul Care Retreats - information and dates later 5) Mission U - learning together for transformation of the world. Three new curricula each year: One for children, one for youth and one for adults, focused on a shared biblical theme. 6) Change in giving. There will be the five channels of giving we have now plus "targeted giving" along with electronic giving. 7) There is a possibility of a name change. We have had 19 different names in our 150 years. This is called "Refreshing the Brand". A brand is the sum total of expectations, memories, stories, relationships and visuals that distinguishes an organization. A brand has a personality and we want ours to be Faith Hope and Love. (Not the kitchen ladies that many churches have considered us) The desire is the meetings are more energizing and more inclusive with the updated brand and will attract more women of faith. United by God's love, UMW can uplift women and children. With love in action every day, together we can do more, together we will grow to build diversity and thrive." I will continue to watch the videos in the course and update you. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. If I don't have the answer, I can review the video or contact the conference to answer your questions. Sherry Veldhuizen grmasherry49@gmail.com, 515-240-7594 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT MISSION COORDINATOR FOR EDUCATION & INTERPRETATION It seems that this year has gone by sooo fast. The pandemic is decreasing but has been confusing, where do we have to wear masks, can we meet in large groups or go to families for the holidays or are vaccines to be gotten by all? No matter what, changes still go on. Mission u has made changes. We have a new program book. So why not include your UMW unit in the change just to mix it up a little? Maybe change times or meeting places? Maybe develop different mission projects by developing a new relationship with someone or some organization. Maybe use the program resource book more often. Change may add new life into our units and renew our commitment. This month is Thanksgiving. For UMW it is a month to say thank you and give to World Thank Offering. This is one of the 5 channels of giving of UMW. The money goes to missions, service and advocacy. No set amount is required, just collect coins or dollar bills in a box or jar and turn it into your units. UMW will be very grateful for your contribution. I want to say thank you for all your support and prayers while I have been Education and Interpretation officer. Blessings to all, Sue Smith, nursesuesmith@gmail.com / 515-208-0844
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 6 OF 11 GREETINGS FROM YOUR DISTRICT PROGRAM RESOURCES COORDINATOR Hi, my UMW Friends, I’m writing this on Halloween Eve. It is a beautiful fall evening, although a little cool. The trees are gorgeous and weather perfect for Trick or Treating. We’ve had 2 or 3 inches of rain which we needed badly. God is good! Last Wednesday, a brand new beautiful baby boy blessed us with his presence. Mommy and baby are healthy and doing well. Daddy too! God is so very good. We UMW women have some really good, interesting and educational books on our reading list. Please, ladies, take advantage of these wonderful books. This world is filled with good books. I enjoy all kinds, and am especially fond of mysteries. However, in order to be a part of the UMW Reading Program, we need to report only the books on that list. Taking my own advice, I am reading Gum Moon, a novel of San Francisco Chinatown. It’s the story of a 3-year old Chinese girl who was sold into slavery by her own parents because of extremely poverty. The novel is based on events in the life of the author’s wife’s grandmother. If your Unit doesn’t have a library, I encourage you to talk to your local program resources Coordinator and work on sitting up a small library. And encourage the ladies to start reading. Blessings to all. Phyllis Huitt Phuitt44@gmail.com / 515-537-0513 --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR IOWA CONFERENCE ASSEMBLY LIAISON We are still months away from Assembly, May 20-22 in Orlando, but just weeks away from the deadline of Nov. 30 for early-bird registration and for reserving a hotel room in the Iowa Conference block. So if you have been on the fence about Assembly, we encourage you to give it some serious thought. You can still register for in- person or virtual Assembly up until April 11 and might still be able to land a room in the convention hotel, but there are advantages to acting early. All the latest information, and the registration form, are available at Asssembly2022.org. Spend some time browsing the website to get a glimpse of the fun and fellowship that is to come! Just a few hints and reminders: 1) You arrange your own transportation and pay your own hotel and registration; 2) You will need to upload a copy of your Covid vaccination card at the time you register for in- person; 3) If you can’t find your new district name on the list when you register, just use your old district name;
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 7 OF 11 4) The Iowa Conference UMW will reimburse some of your expenses, amount to be determined, but not until after Assembly. Through October, there are 10 from Iowa who have registered for in-person Assembly and two for virtual. I will be adding my name soon. Hope you will too! Nancy Stockdale nstock56@aol.com --------------------------------------- GREETINGS FROM YOUR IOWA NATIONAL PROGRAM ADVISORY GROUP MEMBER Keep on Moving Forward – Never Turning Back! “Together we can do more!” This is one theme for new visions of a renewed and energized 2022 United Methodist Women as we have assessed and listened and dreamed in recent years. Some of you have already been introduced to a few reworked program resources—and there’s much more to come! There will be new ways of reaching out to women who are not as familiar with United Methodist Women as some of us through an introductory part of the website, an option for national membership as an entry level, a newsletter for all UMW members, Soul Care Retreats for self-care and spiritual rejuvenation, revamped intergenerational Mission u curriculum that shares biblical and justice-oriented themes, more virtual tools, options for virtual units, the addition of an option for targeted giving to particular program interests to the 5 Channels of Giving, and there may even be more things to come! If you participate in person or virtually in the 2022 Assembly next May, you will experience some of the new things as we continue the work to influence and impact the world we live in. We have all experienced changes throughout our lives, and especially in the last two years. Tony Robbins has said “Change is inevitable. Progress is optional.” Mark 2:21-22 reminds that putting new wine into old wineskins doesn’t work—new wine needs new wineskins to fully develop (but I was recently reminded that old wine can go into new wineskins just fine). Some of us are fine, old “wine” and we are valuable! We know that we also need to make new “wine” by bringing new women into our groups—or new groups—in order to continue into the future. How can we do this? How can we progress? Following are some suggestions in the 2021 World Thank Offering Program: In Your Community: Challenge yourself to ask one person in your community who is not at all related to United Methodist Women what it might take for them to find the group relevant to their life. Would it need to meet at a different time or place? Expand the topics it addresses? Do “meetings” a different way? You don’t have to make any changes yet, but open yourself to the possibility that some kinds of change could make your service stronger. With the United Methodist Women: Gather differently! Most of us have set habits about how we do United Methodist Women ministries and programs. Plan to do your next one in some way you never have before—
RIVERVIEW PARK DISTRICT COMMUNIQUE A Newsletter of Central Iowa United Methodist Women NOVEMBER 2021 - PAGE 8 OF 11 whether it’s in a different location (a local diner or coffee shop rather than at church?), with different people (invite someone new!), by purchasing the resource on Mighty Networks, or in some other way that embraces that God is always making all things, including the United Methodist Women, new. I hope you will take advantage of the two videos shown at UMW district and conference annual meetings, which were commissioned for our use. The Friends of the Groom group did an excellent job of helping us think about biblical justice using Amos 5:24 and several skits (“Me and You and Us and Them”) and the concept of restorative justice (“Grace Notes”). Your various UMW groupings, church classes, and perhaps other settings would all be possibilities to view and discuss as whole or in parts. Be creative! Access these through the UMW Ministries link on the Iowa Annual Conference website (www.iaumc.org/umw-videos). Our Conference UMW has an exciting opportunity to connect with the West Ohio Conference UMW in another collaboration event on November 13th – “The Blessings of Play.” I hope to see some of you online with me! Remember to sign up for an exciting 2022 Assembly by November 30th to receive a reduced fee! The in-person registrations can be changed to virtual if necessary at a later date with a nearly full refund difference given. Janet Wolf has been announced as a Keynote Speaker—you might remember that she authored the Mission u spiritual growth study book “Practicing Resurrection: The Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship” several years ago. Together we can do more! Let me know how I can assist you as we try to face challenging changes. Rita Carter – 7218 El Rancho Ave, Windsor Heights, IA 50324 – ritaac@mchsi.com – 515-979-0605 --------------------------------------- UMW Purpose The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. The Vision Turning faith, hope, and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world. Living the Vision We provide opportunities and resources to grow spiritually, become more deeply rooted in Christ and put faith into action. We are organized for growth, with flexible structures leading to effective witness and action. We equip women and girls around the world to be leaders in communities, agencies, workplaces, governments, and churches. We work for justice through compassionate service and advocacy to change unfair policies and systems. We provide educational experiences that lead to personal change in order to transform the world.
