PRESIDENTS PAGE Hello Fellow Weight Watchers Where has 2020 gone? I hope we do not have to experience anything like the Covid 19 Virus again, in our lifetime. I do hope 2021 is a much better year for everyone. Clubs will be closing for the Christmas break. Please can you let the office know when you will be closing and when you will be re-opening for 2021. BELMONTS 50th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. Cynthia and I attended & we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was great to listen to Linda Champness talk about what happened in the world around us 50 years ago & later years. The birthday cake was a work of art, I believe made by one of their club members. A great day. MEMBERS GUIDEBOOKS They are selling like hot cakes. At our recent Federation Committee Meeting it was decided that we would sell the books to the clubs for only $5.00 each. Excellent value. I emailed most of the club Presidents & let them know they were available to purchase. Those that I could not email, I sent letters. I suggested that the clubs had two options to purchase the books. 1. If the club is financial, they could give every member of the club, a New Members Guidebook as a Christmas gift. 2. Explain to all the club members that they can purchase the book for $5.00. Club to take the orders and collect the money from the members. In turn the club can order the books from the office. I also explained that because the postage is so expensive and terribly slow. They can be picked up from the office, either Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. Clubs North of the river can pick their books up from my home, which has been working out well. COLOURED PAGES IN THE NEWSLETTER As from this Newsletter, we will be cutting back on printing coloured writing and photos. Reason being it is costing the Federation too much money for Toners. E.g. a set of 3 coloured and 1 black toner cost nearly $900. We have gone through 3 full sets just this year. BEST WISHES FOR A SAFE AND HAPPY CHRISTMAS I would like to extend to all the club Presidents, Committee Members and Club Members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I wish you all good health and good cheer to all your family. I do hope you all enjoy the holiday festive season, and I look forward to all the clubs returning for the 2021 year Federation President: Shirley Sardelich MEMBERS Guide- BOOK I would like to thank our sub-committee, who first worked on this book. Myself, Deborah Clark, Jenni Lynch, Pauline Green & Edna Jones. Cynthia Baxter typed up the old Members Guidebook and saved it on a thumb drive. Our sub-committee added and deleted items that were in the old book. Jenni then made the adjustments. I then took it to the Nutrition Specialist Margaret Hays, who operates from 2/39 King George Street Innaloo. Margaret then re-wrote all the Nutritional parts within this new book. Unfortunately, she did not save it on the thumb drive I gave her but emailed me all of what she had done. This made it harder
for us. So poor Jenni made all the alterations and typed up everything in the book, trying to fit things on each page etc. I went through and proofread the book. We have now changed the front cover, which I think really looks good. We have also put a photo in this book of our founding member Daphne Hugo. Then off I took it to the printers and there we have the Newly Revised Edition of the Members Guidebook. We decided not to have wire this time. It is stapled, which makes it a lot easier to handle. We are selling this book for $5.00each. I feel the book would make a great Christmas Gift for some-one. The books are selling rapidly, I will be placing my second order for printing at this rate, so be quick get your orders in before Christmas. Club Presidents promote this book to your club members. This book will motivate everyone to lose weight. Federation President. Shirley. ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS 20 Members weighed in great effort since lockdown. Queen of the month was Lauren with a loss of 4.8 Lady of the month with a loss of 2.8 was Suzette both Members have steadily lost weight each week, Lauren has lost 16 kilos since starting her weight loss journey in August. We had the pleasure of our local Dr and his Partner come and share their experience in walking the Camino de Santiago known in English as The Way of St. James. It takes 35 days to complete the journey, this proved to be a hot trip, they had food shortage unless if you did not go much on omelette as it was served at almost every stop. They came across a young lady with an injured foot when she found out the pair were a Doctor and Nurse she told them she had been praying for a miracle all in all even though they didn't lose any weight they did lose muscle they met many interesting different people and collected a certificate at the end of their journey. On behalf of the committee and Members of Weight Watchers Fed Esperance another member has left us Norma Joy Madgen (Joy) departed this earth 27/10/2020 after a stroke in 2017. Joy was a life member of weight watchers joining in Perth and coming to Esperance where after settling in Grass Patch she would travel to weight watchers about an hour and half away every Thursday. Members attended the celebration of Joy's life dressed in club colours; a poem was read out by Marlene our President. Thank You With Kind Regards Jeanette Edwards Vice Secretary Deepest Sympathy on the sad loss of Norma Weight Watchers Federation
GERALDTON SUNSHINE SLIMMERS We welcome all our members to our last three Thursday mornings of meetings for December. Our Luncheon will have been held on the first Thursday and we will be awarding our Princess their Ribbons for the last time in 2020 Members have picked a Christmas envelope with their lucky number in to be drawn at our luncheon. Members have to put a coloured spot on each week, Green if they had lost weight, yellow if they stayed the same and red if they had put on weight. Regardless of the colour of the spots, because it is Christmas all members have a chance to win one of three lovely raffles beautifully made by our lovely Diane Starr. October has passed us by with our Slimmer of the Year Pat Chambers being presented her medal sent up from Perth. Runner up Shirley Hunt and Anna Chambers also presented with flowers at a morning tea held in our rooms. With three members still in hospital we wish for them to be back with us before we end our year. Our Pluck the Duck is now finished, and three lucky winners were awarded money and all members went home with their little ducks and $5 each in a little draw. Lots of smiles from the members. Hang up your stockings ladies you all deserve a visit from Santa. Wishing our State President, her Committee, all club members, and their families a Safe, Healthy and Happy Christmas. Enjoy your end of the year holiday break looking forward to a very Happy New Year 2021 to you all. Kind Regards Marilyn Chester President FORRESTFIELD WEIGHT WATCHERS From all of us to all of you may 2021 bring you all you want as well as good health and good fortune. Without any advertising we have had several new members since we got back from Covid- and they are all doing exceptionally well. When new members start, we always ask how they heard of us and the answer is always “word of mouth”, one person tells another and that is it, then we grow. We have just finished a Cash for Grams competition and we awarded members a total of $200.They received 50 cents for each 100 grams they lost over an 8 week period AND we had 5 members who lost each week and a further 5 who only had one gain. Next week we start the Upside-down traffic lights!! Green dot for a loss-yellow for stay the same and a red dot for a gain. Our weekly food fines totalling $405 (for forbidden foods for the year) which are selected by our weekly winners are donated to our sponsor child Faith from Kenya. This year they are buying staple foods such as rice, maize, chickens, and other essentials. Faith is our 2 nd sponsored child –we previously had Melline whom we watched grow for 8 years. We get regular photos and updates from Word Mission as we have watched their community grow with our help. We have also donated $100 to the Fred Hollows foundation. We are now in the process of organising our Christmas dinner for the 15th December when we will then close and re-open on the 12th January 2021. Till the New Year—all the very best. Sheila and Aileen.
ELLENBROOK Community Weight Loss Club What has happened to this year? We cannot believe that we only have a few more weigh ins until Christmas. We have organised our Christmas function at the local restaurant and are looking forward to getting together and having a great night out after all the weirdness that 2020 has bought to us all. In the meantime, we have a guest speaker coming who is a local Chiropractor/ Wellness Coach. So, we are all excited to hear what he has to say. Discussions this month were about “Sleep and Weight Loss”, “Portion Sizes”, “Variety is the Spice of Life”, “Benefits of a Nutritious Diet” and our Melbourne Cup Quiz and sweep, was a lot of fun. Our cooking challenge has ended, and we certainly have some excellent cooks in our group and this challenge gave our members an opportunity to try some new ingredients and cooking ideas. We also have a few ladies on the Slimmer of the Year 2021 target, and we are proud of them. Libby, Liesl, Samantha and Julie M. Keep up the excellent work over the Christmas break. I am truly fortunate to have the support of a wonderful committee since I was voted in as President and I am honoured to be part of such a friendly group. The committee and I are in the process of making flyers and posters to display in our local area and for the new Ellenbrook Hub which hopefully, will bring new members to our group next year. On behalf of everyone at Ellenbrook Weight Loss Club, we wish you all a fabulous Christmas and loads of happiness and weight loss goals in 2021. Sue Budd – President GOSNELLS COMMUNITY WEIGHT WATCHERS Hello Fellow Members Since we have been back from Corona Virus 19 situation, our club has many ups and downs. Mainly because we have not had access to the Function Room at the Gosnells Bowling Club. This is due to the Selectors use the Function Room on Monday evenings until 6.00pm. We did try to negotiate to bring it back to their use 5.30pm, but to no avail. We have been meeting in the lady’s locker room, which is quite constricting, until 2 weeks ago. We now have an ideal situation holding our club meetings in the main room, divided off with privacy screening. We now have 10 happy members and are planning our Christmas party and what break we will have over Christmas. Our meetings are not long, and we finish the evening off with Bingo, some-one does win after a few weeks. I would like to wish all my fellow Weight Watchers A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW 2021 YEAR. Club President. BETH CLARK
HAMERSLEY WARWICK/WEIGHT WATCHES Jean and Shelley are Postgraduates, and all members had a very enjoyable evening at the Greenwood Hotel, to celebrate. Barbara is taking control of her weight. Nicole is back on track. Debbie is slimming down, steady does it Debbie. Debbie gave us a highly informative talk on EXERCISE AND WEIGHT CONTROL. People who exercise regularly, lose weight, and keep it off. Exercise improves General Health and Well Being. Exercise increase the metabolic rate. Strength training further builds muscle, you look better and your feel better. Avoids injury and helps with balance. But most of all, you need to find something that you will enjoy. A little, is better than none. Be active every day and, be kind to yourself. Walking, Bike Riding, Prime Movers, Aqua Aerobics, Gym, Tennis, Tai Chi, Pilates, and Line Dancing Members brought in Pantry items and Toiletries, for the Spiers Centre Inc, Heathridge. Xmas hampers for needy families with our community. Satisfaction Lies in the effort. Full effort is full victory. Kind Regards Shelley. BYFORD DAYTIME WEIGHT WATCHERS Well done to Cheryl who won our Three-Monthly Queen with a loss of 7.8 kg in a very close contest with Lynette who was second with a loss of 7.7 kg and Robyn was third with a loss of 3.1 kg. Our Queen of the Month was Cheryl with a loss of 2.8 kg, Sandra was second with a loss of 2.0 kg and Linley was third with a loss of 1.3 kg. In the Grads Dorothy and Margie were equal first with a variance of 0.4 kg and Lyn and Alan were equal third with a variance of 0.5 kg. Mandy ran a competition to coincide with the Melbourne Cup and called it the "Byford Cup". We were all entered in pairs and the winning pair were Lidia and Sandra with Mandy and Alan coming in second and Christine and Lynette third. A big thank you to Mandy for running our competitions and doing a great job. A group of us went to a Melbourne Cup Lunch and Alan won the best dressed Gentleman and came home with a lovely hamper. Our group cheered and screamed very loudly and got him over the line. He certainly has a future on the catwalk and his win was well deserved. Our Christmas Competition is well underway and a big bonus of 20 points awaits all the members who lose weight or stay the same at the first weigh in after our Christmas break. All our members now have a copy of the updated Members' Guide and will have plenty of reading to do in the coming weeks. I wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas and let us hope 2021 holds a brighter future for all of us. Take care and keep safe Kind regards Margaret
BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS There has been a lot happening at Belmont over the last few weeks! I will start by introducing our new Treasurer, Gail, who volunteered to take over from Joyce. It seems Joyce, who has been a member for 17 years, only agreed to fill in temporarily as Treasurer. That was 11 years ago! She has done a brilliant job all that time and has now been awarded a Life Membership. Thanks to both Joyce and Gail – without volunteers the club would really struggle. Awards: I missed a couple of meetings, so I hope I have them all. Four-week daisies went to Shirley (twice) and Kris (twice, plus a 4-week ribbon). Kris continues to do well as he also received a green ribbon for a 6 kg loss and a ribbon for 12-week in a row loss. Five grads maintained their goal weight for 3 months: Barb, Jean C, Helen, Joyce, and Maggie. Jean C was Grad of the Month and 3 Months. For October Jean H was Queen of the Month. Grads of the Month were Joyce, Jean C (tied) and Pam. We celebrated the Melbourne Cup with sweeps and a hobbyhorse race meeting. We also sang Happy Birthday to Val, but we saved the biggest celebration for… BELMONT’S BELATED BIRTHDAY BASH On 27 October, we finally celebrated our 50th birthday. th President Linda asked us to close our eyes and think back to Tuesday 7th April 2020, then open them and pretend we were there because that is when our birthday celebration should have been held. Our club began on Tuesday 7th April 1970. The club was started by Liz Delue, who remained a member until after her 90s, but after losing her husband she moved to be closer to her daughter. Unfortunately, we have lost contact and were unable to find news about her. In 50 years, we have seen many Federation Presidents and committee members. The current President Shirley and Vice-President Cynthia joined our celebration. They presented us with a birthday card and book we can keep our memories in. Many thanks to Shirley and the committee for their lovely gift and kind words. Quite a few past members were able to join us and we had a great time seeing old friends and sharing stories. We welcomed Margaret B, Beryl R, Jessica W, Mavis M, Sandra N, Jo D, Carmel M, Kathy C, Josie D, Coral P, Terri & Codi W, Glenis O, and Mary M. Now we have 33 active members: 8 Grads, 2 social and 23 regular members. We believe social members are still especially important; they need this connection just as much as the rest of us need the scales. Maureen is our longest serving member who is still active today.\ All our meetings have been held in this RSL Hall. We invited the current President Alan and Secretary Yvonne, who are representing the last 50 years of RSL officials. They were both called away to a meeting but hopefully they can join us for our Christmas morning tea. You cannot have a party without playing games and everyone enjoyed “pass the parcel”. After the game and a bit of history from 50 years ago it was time to eat. Morning tea featured a great variety of delicious food, tea, coffee, and juice. We followed COVID procedures with hand sanitiser required before visiting the buffet. Tongs and gloves were provided for selecting food and several members assisted, as necessary. Thanks to everyone as all the procedures were followed with no trouble at all.
There was plenty of time for eating and chatting. Then our birthday cake – made that morning by our member Val – was brought in. We had four past presidents at the celebration who helped President Linda cut the cake. After the cake and a resounding rendition of Happy Birthday it was time for group photos, thank you and goodbyes. A good time was had by all! President Linda would like to thank all our members who worked together to make our birthday one to remember. Well done, everyone! Some 1970 history: Famous people born on 7 April: Russell Crow, Billie Holiday, Jackie Chan, James Garner John Gorton was Prime Minister and Sir David Brand was Premier of Western Australia Richard Nixon was President of the US Harold Wilson was Prime Minister of the UK John Wayne and Maggie Smith won Academy Awards for Best Actor and Actress Midnight Cowboy won best film. MOORE RIVER WEIGHT WATCHERS It is so lovely to have these beautiful sunny days. More outdoors activities l hope for most of us. Now we can think “salads" and not so much “stews and casseroles” which of course are delicious but do need lots of mash potatoes (l do anyway). Over the next few weeks members are going to bring in healthy recipes (written). There are so many quick and easy ways to eat healthier without missing out on favourite foods It is mainly about portion sizes. One of these recipes will be made to bring in each week. Last week one of the laddies made lo- cal Jellies with fruit in these lovely little jars for us. Just the right size to have for a sweet snack. Next Wednesday we are going to Benara Nursery to buy Christmas presents, which might of course end up in our gardens. We have booked “Staying on Your Feet” to come to our club next February. This will be open to all communities. We celebrated one of our long-term members 80th Birthday this month. Sylvia was there in the beginning of Weight Watchers and is still a continually active member. It is so hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner. Our last meeting is on the 9 th December, only 3 weeks away. As always, we do try to encourage people in our community to join us by putting leaflets around. What is the old saying “If you never ever go, you will never ever know”? We wish all clubs a very Happy and Safe Christmas and hopefully in 2021 we can all get back to some normality. Jae Watson MRWW Vice President
GREENWOOD WEIGHT WATCHERS Hi to you all, What a year it has been for the World, but Western Australia has been blessed with extraordinarily little disruption compared to other countries. Next week we are having are Christmas Party at the Kingsley Tavern, many thanks to member Maureen for organising the night out. Michelle took the club tonight and read an article about cancer and how important it is to have a heathy lifestyle. Christmas is a time when we tend to overindulge on the wrong foods and drink too much alcohol. Encouragement to is need and suggestion to members to try and eat healthy over Christmas. This year Greenwood Weight Watchers donated 23 filled handbags to assist women in need through Share the Dignity. Providing essential personal need products such as shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash or soap, deodorant, and other treats. Members brought in the essentials and extras, also the handbags which were then filled. These are then placed in a box at Bunnings for the organization to pick up. A group of ladies delivered them to Bunnings this week. This is a great way to start the silly season, assisting people less fortunate than ourselves. Greenwood weight Watchers would like to wish you all a “Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2021” Until next year kind regards Susan Wetton

10 TIPS FOR STAYING ON TRACK DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON – Column by Annette Sym The next few weeks can be a difficult time to stick to your healthy habits. Embracing the holiday spirit often leads to overindulging, overeating and little to no exercise. I know that holidays are a time to relax and take time out for yourself, but this does not mean abandoning all the hard work and progress you have made this year. The good news is, it is possible to relax with family and friends and still stay on track. And I am speaking from experience here, I have had many Christmases in my healthy weight range, some I even lost weight. Here are my 10 tips for staying on track 1. Always eat breakfast. I have put this first because it is the key to staying on track with your daily meals. 2. Choose healthy meal options. And watch your portion sizes. 3. Fill up with fibre. Include lots of salads and vegetables with your meals. 4. Be prepared. Put healthy snacks in your handbag such as fruit and muesli bars. This way you will not be tempted with convenience foods when out and about. 5. Avoid temptation. If snacking on high fat foods such as chocolate and chips has been a problem in the past, do not eat them or take a small serving and do not go back for seconds. 6. Drink lots of water. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so make sure you are drinking 2 litres a day. 7. Limit alcohol. Do not let it become a daily thing and if you can, avoid it all together. 8. Increase your exercise. This will help to counteract any additional calories you consume. 9. Do not eat just because you can. Learn to say “no thank you” to well-meaning friends and family. 10.Keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. Reflect on your goals and all the progress you have made often. This will help to keep you motivated. Getting away We are a little limited to what we can do this year to get away and I am guessing there will be a lot of people hitting the road for camping or caravanning holidays. The beauty of this type of holiday is that you can prepare your own meals so you are in control of what you’re eating. Just make sure you have healthy snack options on hand for between meals. Having to rely on restricted kitchens or open fires can be a challenge, the key is to have meals you can make without too much fuss. Cook meat on the BBQ or fire. Wrap some potatoes in foil to put in the fire or barbeque corn on the cob. Serve with a simple salad. Yum! 5 great ways to be more active on holidays: 1. Get outdoors and play games with the kids or grandkids. 2. Swim or take advantage of water sports options such as kayaking. 3. Hire a bike to explore the local area. 4. Go for bush walks or take an evening stroll. 5. Make use of public facilities such as tennis or squash courts. I hope these tips help you to stay healthy and happy throughout the festive season. Enjoy every minute of the holiday season but do not forget to pack your good intentions. Annette’s cookbooks SYMPLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE are available online or in all good bookstores.
