Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook Dear Parents and Players, Welcome to the 2019/2020 Northland Volleyball NLV season. We are extremely excited to be able to work with the athletes their families to provide a great experience and atmosphere to build volleyball knowledge and skills. Our goal is to provide a competitive club atmosphere, where athletes will compete at a high level in the MN/WI region. We focus on serving the population of Northeastern Minnesota youth for a wide range of ages and athletes. We are offering competitive tournament settings and coaching staff that focuses on bettering each athlete at the individual level. The Northland Volleyball mission is: To foster an atmosphere where athletes can advance their play with committed coaching, develop life skills and gain exposure to an elevated level of competition. Code of Ethics: The following code of ethics is designed to hold all Northland coaching staff, players, parents and volunteers. ● Abide by all applicable certifications through Northland Volleyball, North Country Region(NCR), and USA Volleyball(USAV). ● To conduct referee duties in an honest, non-deceptive manner. ● Realize and accept that a team’s reputation is built not only on its athletic ability, but also on the sportsmanship courtesy and manners/attitudes of each individual player, coach and parent. ● To encourage and promote loyalty to the sport of volleyball. ● To always apply your knowledge, skills and training for the betterment of yourself, team and club. ● To be welcoming, friendly and courteous to all coaches, players, parents and facilities used. ● To abstain from using improper or questionable methods of communication between NLV or our competition’s coaches, players or parents. ● To refrain from abusing the knowledge, training and expertise of NLV in a manner that compromises the safety or wellbeing of our coaches, players or parents. ● Minimize the chance of harm or injury by steering clear of poor decision making on and off the court.
Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook Tournaments For all out of town tournaments, it is highly recommended that teams reserve rooms together/the same hotel to encourage team bonding. Northland will reserve lodging for coaches only and will arrange to have a block of rooms set aside for families to use to reserve their own rooms. Rideshare When possible the organization strongly encourages ride sharing to practices and/or tournaments. Coaches As coaches, the primary goal of this season is to develop skills (both as a team, and individually), educate our athletes on sportsmanship, and provide athletic training to become better at volleyball. Coaches work hard to promote not only the elements of the sport but also life skills and develop individual character. The systems we use are based to provide feedback, developing relationships with athletes for a cohesive learning environment, and multiple individualized interactions with athletes. The feeling of the club as a family permeates through the atmosphere of the organization, while pushing players constantly to build and better themselves as both athletes and as an individual. Our coaching staff are all Impact Certified through USA Volleyball. Coaching Philosophy: 1. Repetition 2. Discipline 3. Competition 4. Feedback On the topic of playing time or game strategy, we ask that you please respect the coach’s decision and knowledge of the game and trust they are making the best decisions for the team as a whole. We WILL NOT discuss play time, game strategy or other players abilities with you as a parent. Period. If there are any issues or concerns, the appropriate response to an issue begins with the athlete discussing the issue with the coach first. We WILL NOT talk with parents until this step has been made, and we WILL NOT discuss play time before, during or after a tournament within 24 hours. Please refrain from speaking when emotions are high. Questions? Please visit our website: playnorthland.com Or email us at: playnorthland@gmail.com
Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook The response to an issue should follow these steps: 1. Talk with your daughter about the issues at hand. What is your daughter’s perspective? Does she feel that she can handle this issue on her own? Does she feel comfortable discussing this matter with the coaches directly? 2. Encourage her to set up a meeting with the coach(es) if she or you still have questions. This will be an informational meeting where she asks questions, listen and has an open discussion. 3. If questions remain, set up a meeting between the coach(es), a director, your daughter, and yourself. Playing Time Policy The vast majority of concerns that come up are revolved around the concept of play time. The following is our general philosophy on play time: 1. Northland does not guarantee playing time to any player 2. We believe that players are entitled to know what is affecting their play time 3. Playing time must be earned by attitude, and abilities 4. Play time is based on tournament play and practices As always, communication is key amongst coaching staff, players and parents. Sports Engine All communication between players, parents and coaching staff will happen through the Sports Engine app/site. Download the app on your phone for easier access. The app will allow you to receive texts and gives you access to practice schedules, tournament schedule, USA volleyball membership, payments due, contact info for the Northland Volleyball family both coaches and players, and player stats and testing results. Each athlete and parent should have their own account. Each are responsible for knowing the practice times and tournament times posted on the website, and within the Sports Engine app. All questions related to the team, and interaction between coaches and athletes should first go through the SE app. Team Bonding This is all about finding time to communicate and grow as a team. The better teams work off the court, the better they will work on the court! As a way to bond and grow as an individual, we suggest volunteering together outside of Northland hours. With our partnership through YMCA, we will be offering volunteering opportunities to better the community. Questions? Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook Guardians Role We appreciate the commitments you have made as a parent and look forward to helping your athletes work towards their goals. Here at Northland we encourage best efforts, open communication between teams / coaching staff, and commitment to positive conversations on and off the courts. We promise to come from a place of assuming best intentions, and know you will too. If there are concerns however, we want to hear from you. Volunteering: This allows us to keep club costs below average and deliver superior opportunities to our athletes. When these needs arise it will be first come first serve basis on SE but we ask that each family prepares to contribute 5 hours of volunteering over the span of the season. Some examples of this would be helping set up at the home tournament, helping run concessions, ticket sales, and set up for the end of season banquet. These opportunities will become available to RSVP for on SE and will be bonding experiences for parents and players. Fundraising There are times when families need assistance or athletes would like to help their parents cover club and travel expenses. Below are some ways to help with the cost of the season: ● Snap! Raise: (https://www.snap-raise.com) Our club will participate in this crowd raising campaign from January to February where athletes will have the opportunity to ask family and friends to help sponsor their. ● Sibling Discount: Do you have more than one athlete in your family playing for NLV? If so, you will receive a discount of $50 per athlete. ○ Code for Sibling Discount in SE season registration: Reach out to playnorthland@gmail.com if this is you! ● Payment Plan: Instead of paying all season costs up front, you have the opportunity to pay in increments, as found on our website under the Season page. Tournament Expectations ● Players must attend Northland Night on where they will participate in our referee training that will help athletes perform reffing duties and scoring documentation correctly. Questions? Please visit our website: playnorthland.com Or email us at: playnorthland@gmail.com
Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook ● If a player will miss a tournament, be late or leave early, it is their responsibility to contact the coach a week prior to tournament, and for the WI Dells tournament as soon as possible so coaches can plan ahead. ● Games can get heated, but as Northland athletes, parents and coaches, we must keep our cool. Sportsmanship is very important, so any cussing, fighting, cheating/lying and giving attitude is against Northland rules. Any unsportsmanship like attitude will be dealt with. ● Positive healthy choices at concession stand and packed snacks = better play and more energy. ● Volunteer at our Northland Tournaments helping with concessions, set up and take down or reffing. ● Travel is something we practice/prepare for and believe it builds confidence, exposure and memories. Personal travel/transportation costs are at your own expense and in addition to the club cost. When are the teams formed? Athletes will tryout, and be told if they have made a team via email within 24 hours of tryouts. If selected for a team, the athletes must send a confirmation reply and deposit payment (season registration - received via link in email you registered for tryouts with) within 48 hours of the email sent to secure their spot on the team. It is at the coach's discretion to move players from team to team throughout the season depending on their attitude and abilities and overall needs of the club. Northland Volleyball General Season Expectations: Attendance Athletes will be at all practices, unless they have notified their coaches prior to practice. Injuries cannot be prevented all the time. If you do become injured and cannot participate in practice, it is expected that you still attend practice. Players not attending practice due to inclement event will be deemed excused from practice as long as they have notified their team coach directly ahead of time. Players are required to show up for practice 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of practice to allot time for getting dressed and setting up nets. We uphold the Minnesota laws that govern us, and only allow USAV certified athletes and coaches in the gym during practice time. Questions? Please visit our website: playnorthland.com Or email us at: playnorthland@gmail.com
Northland Volleyball 2019-2020 Parent / Player Handbook Schedules We will have schedules out as soon as possible, please save these schedules yourself and write them down. Athletes and parents are responsible for remembering the schedule throughout the season. Schedule for practice and tournaments may change, and we are at the mercy of the gym’s in which we hold practices at. Any practice or tournament cancellations will be posted on Sports Engine, and broadcasted in the most effective manner deemed by the team head coach. Team Duties Athletes are required to stay for ALL matches which the team is required to ref, and will be responsible for participating in all reffing duties throughout the year. The athlete WILL NOT be allowed to leave early for any circumstances unless discussed with the coach prior to the tournament. If the athlete is knowingly removing herself from the duties of reffing, then a discussion will take place with the head coach. When the team is sitting at a tournament, please cheer on other Northland Volleyball teams at the tournament and make a regular visit to the court you are playing on to check the score and plan to return to begin warmups.
