Northeastern School District March 19, 2021 First graders in Conewago’s Room 208 are ready for all that March brings! From leprechauns, to warmer weather, and to new plant life, we are ready for it!
In third grade BCA, students are reading Judy Moody Saves the World! To support that, this week stu- dents have read books about recycling, reusing, and reducing waste. As an optional project, students were challenged with the question: What can you create out of trash or recycled items at your house? Some students created a work of art, a new toy, a tool, or something to solve a problem they have! Check out some of the finished projects!
Alexa & Anat, sixth grade SBI students, took on the Fluor Challenge (STEM) to build a structure using only tape and paper that will hold a can of green beans for a specific amount of time or longer. The students worked tirelessly, over a three week period, to create a structure reaching over 4 foot tall! Great job, Bobcats! They are hoping to be se- lected as winners to represent Northeastern School District in the contest. Thank you Mrs. Oliver for the challenge! National Breakfast Week WINNERS at Conewago Elementary.
Mrs. Thoman’s 6th grade students at Shallow Brook Intermediate are published authors! Students went through the process of publishing a class book titled ‘When I Grow Up....’! Students took pride in their future dream careers as nurses, teachers, mechanics, veterinarians, professional athletes and so much more! They enjoyed creating and reading about their peers’ goals and professional dreams, too! BRAVO 310 Bobcats! Gavin Meador, Middle School 7th grader, celebrated Pi Day with pi day pie and pi sweat pants!
The Mission #1: Create a trap to catch a leprechaun using items from around your home The Mission #2: Using images provided, design a virtual trap to catch a leprechaun The Participants: Mrs. Nase’s, Mrs. Nestor’s, Mrs. Stein’s, and Mrs. Leonard's BCA students Mission Accomplished
Leprechaun traps continued... Mrs. Donnelly's class learned about measurement this week in math. The students prac- ticed measuring things inside their classroom, like their desks and calculators. Then they took advantage of the nice weather to measure their height and arm span outside using chalk to mark where their head, feet, and arms were when they laid on the sidewalk.
Ava Metzler, Alexa Martin, and Ava Kolba (Shallow Brook Sixth Graders) completed the York County Bar Foundation’s 2021 Law Day Bookmark Design Contest. These ladies worked diligently to create an original, unique, and themed bookmark to represent ‘Advancing the Rule of Law Now.’ Many hours and drafts were created to perfect their mas- terpieces! Great job, Bobcats! Mr. LoBianco's students had a wonderful time learning about volcanoes from Miss Van Ar- man, a student teacher from Millersville. She read them a book about volcanoes and discussed the facts they learned, watched videos of ac- tive volcanoes, learned about underground volcanoes and the ring of fire, and completed the lesson with a directed drawing of a volcano. Volca- noes are definitely an interesting topic in kinder- garten!
For the last several weeks, some of Mrs. Leonard's and Mrs. Stein's BCA students had the opportunity to receive enrichment lessons with Mrs. Oliver. They explored some new coding websites such as VexCode VR and CodeSpark. They also had the chance to revisit Code.org and Scratch. No matter which program they chose to explore, students learned some basics of block coding using event codes, repeat codes, and movement codes. A few Bobcats even ventured into different coding languages such as JavaScript.
Last week the families at Conewago collected cereal boxes to use for a STEM domino project that will take place dur- ing our Celebration Assembly on March 25! Our goal was to collect 302 boxes (one for every student). We far sur- passed that goal and collected a total of 882 boxes! It was so fun to watch our collection grow all week! The top class was Miss Wimer's class collecting 228 boxes, followed by Mrs. Schryver's class who collected 187 boxes, and third place was Mrs. Wolff's class with 98 boxes. After our domino experiment, all of the boxes of cereal will be donated to our local food bank!
