O One Book, One Community N One Book, One Community is a grassroots reading movement that aims to bring people together by giving them a shared experience. When we all read the same book, we all have E something to talk about. One Book, One Community’s goal is to break down the barriers between different groups of people and to strengthen Tuscarawas County! About the Book B "Just Smile and Say Hello" is Trang Moreland's inspirational true story of growing up in poverty in Vietnam and her journey to success as a O businesswoman in America. O About the Author Trang Moreland grew up in southern Vietnam. At K the age of 21, she immigrated to the United States. After overcoming language and cultural barriers, she was able to finish trade school and become a successful business owner. Trang and her husband Jay live in Ohio and have two adult children. She donates to many local benefits and charities and provides school supplies for children in her native country. R Civil War: Personal Stories Thursday, October 14 at 6:30 PM A in the Community Room M Join the Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Roundtable for a presentation by Jim Kleefeld. In this 60-minute talk and display S of stories and artifacts from the 1860s, hear carefully researched tales about families, men, women, children, those who went to war and those they left behind. You will see and learn about clay bullets, tintype photos, medicines, handkerchiefs, books, and even a Bible that survived the war. These are intriguing personal stories about individuals - not the battles, the armies, the fighting - who lived and died in those perilous times. Stroke Awareness and Prevention Monday, October 18 at 2:00 PM on Zoom A stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S. and up to 80% of strokes could be prevented. Learn how to recognize stroke signs and symptoms, what to do when this happens and what you can do to prevent a stroke. The Music and Life of Stephen Foster Thursday, October 21 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room The College Club of Tuscarawas County and the Dover Public Library welcome Steve Ball as he talks about Foster’s life from birth, his education, both personal and professional career, and untimely death. Ball will perform some of the best known music that Foster wrote along his musical journey during the middle of the 19th century. The Dark Sire Presents The Creative Quill Saturday, October 23 from Noon to 6:00 PM in the Community Room Fiction writers are invited to this writing conference featuring six hours of workshops that will hone their craft (world building, dialogue, characterization) and sharpen their professional tools (query letters, synopses, formatting). In addition, panels of published authors will discuss publishing industry trends, writer’s block, and how to get published. Special Zoom appearances by John and Gwendolyn Kiste (Gothic) and Nancy Holzner (Fantasy) will expand upon genre writing. Attending writers can also submit their work for first-page critiques and pitch to an agent. P The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald Monday, October 25 at 6:30 PM R in the Community Room As a 24-year-old, John Barnett had an unusual relationship O with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and her 29 crewmembers, all of whom perished when the ship sank in Lake Superior G on November 10, 1975. A Haunted Travels M Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 PM S in the Community Room Join Shawn and Melanie Clay as they explore their methods of “ghost hunting” while visiting two reportedly haunted locations. They will discuss their findings. The topic of “What is a ghost?” will be discussed as a conclusion to the two case studies. Participants are welcome to ask questions and share experiences. November 18: The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson These Americans Jyotsna Sreenivasan Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room Author Jyotsna “Jo” Sreenivasan, who grew up in Northeast Ohio, will discuss and read from her award-winning new book of autobiographical short stories, These Americans . Many of the stories take place in Ohio or the Midwest. Sreenivasan’s presentation will include family photos from the time her parents arrived from India to settle in Ohio in the 1960s. Inky Art Challenge N October 5 Calling all teen artists! Join us for an art challenge that will test your skills with ink. S Mario Party October 12 Come play Mario Party on the Switch or board games with us at this fun event. Photo Booth October 19 Strike a pose or snap a photo at this creative event using photo booth props and supplies from the Mobile STEAM Lab. Plus, make a scrapbook page with your photos. Pumpkin Painting October 26 Come paint a pumpkin and get ready for Halloween at this festive event! STEAM Stops Fridays, October 1 & 29, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM in the Teen Room Join us to get creative with a piece of the Mobile STEAM Lab! STEAM Stops are open to Tweens and Teens ages 8 and up. A Stranger Escape Friday, October 29 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM At this special event, teams will take turns attempting to solve all of the riddles and to escape the Upside Down. Meanwhile, other participants will have the opportunity to play games, make crafts, and enjoy refreshments in the Community Room. The team with the best time will be rewarded a prize package to share. All participants will be entered to win a door prize. Knowledge of the show may be helpful but will not be necessary. We will have our first meeting in the reading corner S of the new and improved Storyroom. We will discuss what books we will read and how often we will meet. Bring a friend! Family Scarecrow Making Contest Drop off your scarecrow Monday October 25 Get your whole family involved in making a scarecrow and display it at the library. Scarecrows can be dropped off Monday, October 25 and will remain on display until Monday Nov.1. Scarecrows can be voted on by patrons all week and winners will be announced at our Spooky Storytime on Saturday Oct. 30 at 10:00 AM. 1st and 2nd prizes will be awarded. 1st prize will include 2 family movies, a pizza gift card from Park Street Pizza and a Halloween family board game. 2nd prize will include 1 family movie and a gift card from Park Street Pizza. Join our fun! Spooky Storytime and Halloween Celebration Saturday, October 30 at 10:00 AM Spooky Storytime will start our day at 10:00 AM then visit our different stations to trick or treat, make a craft and play a game to win a prize. Plus check out all the scarecrows from our Family Scarecrow Making Contest and take a picture with your favorite. Winners of the Scarecrow Making Contest will be announced at the storytime. Reading Dragons are Back! And they brought friends. This year we added griffins and unicorns to our collectible card game. What is Reading Dragons? This program is our way of rewarding young readers. For every 30 minutes you read you get to choose a new card. Pick up your reading tracker in the Children's Room. This program runs throughout the school year. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten This program rewards children ages 0 - Kindergarten for reading or being read to. Sign your child up in the Children's Department for a reading folder and a prize. 7
