Urban Farm Update It is a busy time for ‘Beeks’, that’s Beekeepers to you and me, as it is honey harvesting time. The season has been a bit later than usual due to the changeable weather, so on Sunday I was off to a commercial honey extraction plant in Allanton. Inside a large heated shed was a set of machines that looked like a high tech food laboratory. Each machine is designed to eliminate some of the hard work and time required by the manual extraction method. First we slid the heavy honey frames into a metal runner, that then dropped it down between two sets of hot bladed teeth. These took off the cappings from the honey cells and then dropped the frame onto a stainless steel ‘bath’. Here any honey and wax that dropped out was collected in a vat with a continually rotating auger that squeezed every last drop of honey out, and compressed the wax into a dry form that could be melted back down and used again. Brilliant! Then the frames slid along the bath where they were placed into a commercial centrifugal spinner. Here they were spun at different speeds and directions to ensure every last drop of honey was removed from the cells. This honey then poured through three sets of filters before a final strain and into the huge 200 litre drum for storage. A very sticky process but very satisfying. Hen Update The chickens are enjoying some free range times at the farm and are getting used to their mealworm treats as enticement to return ‘home’. They love scratching around in the dirt and today discovered some fallen apples to add to their ‘Five a Day’. Introducing today ‘Pumpkin’ our New Hampshire. Named after her place of origin and her beautiful orangey red feathers. She was selected for her fast growth, maturity and should be hardy with vigor, whilst being docile, friendly and easy to handle for us humans. Her eggs will be large and brown and she should lay prolifically throughout the winter. Approximately 280 eggs per year. We may need some egg cartons ready for when they all start producing! But don’t worry our security cameras on the farm will let us know where and when they start laying their eggs. Old bath required for our worms . Next week we will look at how we are starting a worm farm. KVC Urban Farm Our Urban Farm is gratefully supported by the Otago Community Trust.

STAR Holiday Courses Over the next two pages is the latest programme for the school holidays at the end of this term. While the holidays are five weeks away these courses fill up very quickly and I would encourage Year 12 and 13 students to seriously look at what is on offer, especially if they are concerned about achieving Level 2 or 3 NCEA. The advantage of enrolling in courses in the holidays is students don’t miss out on valuable class time. Yoobee School Holiday Programme Based in Christchurch these courses are perfect for students looking for something creative to do in their holidays. Have fun and learn new skills in the ever-changing world of digital media. Courses in game design, filmmaking, photography, digital illustration, animation, fashion and make-up.
