National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar was started as a Regional Engineering
College (REC) in 1967. The College started its academic programme with af f iliation
f rom Guwahati University. In 2002, it was included in the list of NITs under the
National Institute of Technology Act 2007 and was also declared as an Institute of
National Importance. NIT Silchar of f ers undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes in engineering, science, humanities and 11 other departments.
Admission to various courses of the institute is based on the national-level entrance
exams such as JEE Main, GATE, CAT and NET. The college currently has a student
strength of 3,001 including male and f emale students, as well as a highly qualif ied
