innovation Hands off! How NASA is helping us to develop autonomous cars Nissan is using technology designed to help robots avoid obstacles and calculate safe paths on other planets in its driverless cars D riverless cars have moved a step closer with the creation of Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM), which we have developed using NASA technology. This major breakthrough brings together vehicle technology and human support to help autonomous vehicles navigate unforeseen situations, such as accidents or roadworks. It is based on the software that NASA uses to enable its robots to avoid obstacles and calculate safe paths on other planets. If an autonomous car came across an incident which could be avoided only by crossing white lines or ignoring traffic lights, it’s unlikely the vehicle could decide what to do for itself. Now it doesn’t have to. With SAM, the autonomous vehicle will be able to come to a safe stop and request help from the command centre. A mobility manager uses vehicle images and sensor data to create a safe path around the obstruction by ‘painting’ a virtual lane for the vehicle to drive through. Once clear, the vehicle resumes fully- autonomous operations. At the same time, SAM shares the information with other autonomous vehicles in the area, which means the mobility manager does not need to resolve the same issue a second time. SAM has major commercial benefits for fleets, including delivery companies and taxi services. It doesn’t remove people from the equation, but uses them to support a larger system of mobility and to help improve the vehicle’s ability to manage complex scenarios in real-time. 16 17
