NEWSLETT ER ㅊ Yantai Huasheng International School April 16, 2021 PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) are scheduled for Monday, April 19. Parents are invited to meet with their child’s teachers to discuss student progress and goals. The time is planned to be reflective and action-oriented. Conferences can be an important part of the education process, giving parents time to ask questions and work together with teachers. While the Parent-Teacher Conference takes place in China time, our teachers are working across the globe in different time zones. As such, staff out of China have different time frames. Parents have an option to meet with out-of-country staff via Zoom either from home or from school. If you choose to meet with out-of-country staff via Zoom from school, another staff member will set up the meeting in a designated office for each teacher. Printed report cards will be available from the classroom teachers (ECC/ELEM) or from the front desk (SECD). Report cards that are not taken on the PTC day will be sent home through your child the following day. School staff and a few high school student volunteers will provide translation services for ECC and Elementary parents. Secondary students can translate for their parents with the exception of students in the ELS program, for whom staff members can be the translator. RE-ENROLLMENT FAIR The re-enrollment portal on PowerSchool will be opened beginning today through Monday, May 3. Instructions for re-enrollment will be emailed today. In order to secure your student’s seat for the 2021-2022 school year, please re-enroll and pay the tuition down payment on time. This year’s Re-Enrollment Fair will be on April 19 during the Parent-Teacher Conferences. There will be computers set up in the lobby, and we will provide assistance for re-enrollment and finance procedures. Parents are not required to attend, but we offer this opportunity if you need assistance in re-enrolling. Please contact admissions@yhischina.com if you have any questions. INTERNATIONAL DAY This year’s International Day is only one week away! It will be held on Friday, April 23, from 11:45 am to 3:00 pm. This day is both a celebration of cultural diversity and an excellent opportunity to connect with school families. Please join us on that day! We will have a flag parade, an international food festival, and performances.
• Flag parade – The Parade of Flags will kick off the International Day Celebration. The oldest girl and youngest boy of each nationality will carry the community country flags. The parents whose child is carrying a flag will be informed, and the students carrying flags are to gather at 11:45 am at the ECC Sensory Zone to get ready for the parade. • International food festival –This year there are 11 food booths including countries chosen by classes as well as countries that represent our student nationalities. We are thankful for all the work going in to prepare this sumptuous food. Thank you, parents! • Performances – Students from the ECC, Elementary, MS/HS choir, as well as staff, will bring the love and joy of different countries’ cultures to us. The detailed performance schedule will be laid out in next week’s newsletter. Please bring your child to the hallway of classroom 117 before their class performance gets started. Students will meet their teacher and then move onto the stage together. Please note that to promote community bonding, participating families are encouraged to be with their child(ren) during International Day, join in the activities together, and enjoy the festivities. Elementary and ECC students will be released to parents at 11:45 am and 12:20 pm, respectively. Friday after-school activities will run as per normal, and school bus will be provided for the students in the activities. If your child does not plan to participate in his or her Friday activity, please inform Mr. Shi at lee.shi@yhischina.com. If you have questions, please contact your PTO language group representative. On behalf of the International Day planning team, we would like to express our gratitude to parents for their strong support in all the time and effort put into preparing the tables and food. Each month, YHIS teaches about a single characteristic and we award students from all grade levels who have demonstrated that characteristic the most. Teachers observe the students throughout the month and nominate winners. For the month of March, our focus was on “Discernment”. We would like to congratulate and recognize the following students leading with discernment among their peers! The students saw and understood people, things, or situations clearly as well as using knowledge to make wise choices and judgements, speaking the truth, and living with integrity both in the classroom and school community. 2021 AP EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS – APRIL 19 - 26 For students taking an AP exam this year, there is an opportunity to have a free review session in preparation for the exams next month. Each session is led by an experienced AP Reader. These are the same people who are involved in scoring the AP exams each year, so their reviews and insights are extremely valuable. The sessions are exam-specific and are for international students. These are live calls, but they are recorded. So, students should sign up even if unable to attend live as the recorded webinar will be emailed after it is over. To register and see the list of exams that will be covered, click HERE. ECC LUNCH FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM Please complete the lunch food survey link (LINK) to indicate if your child is bringing food from home or having school lunch. This would be helpful for the cafeteria team and the teachers to have an understanding of your child’s daily lunch plan. The survey closes at 11:59 pm, Sunday, April 18. The lunch menu is available on pages 5-6. Students will be served western lunch if there's no food order placed for the day.
