Confidential Annex 2 Local authorities endorsement letters From: Peter Mooney Date: Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 2:22 PM Subject: RWC Show at Napier's Sound Shell To: Megan Hanley Hi Megan It was great to meet you last week and learn of your plans for the traveling show during RWC 2011. I am pleased to confirm that the Hawke‟s Bay Regional Coordination Group for RWC in Hawke‟s Bay would enthusiastically support you in your plans to bring the show to Napier. We discussed venues on the day and I am sure that we agree that the Napier Sound Shell on Marine Parade offers to best option for the following reasons. It is an iconic Art Deco venue right in the heart of the city It will be located right next to the centerpiece activity organized by the RCG to run right throughout the Tournament (details are still confidential) The venue can feel comfortably full with around 3-4000 people in attendance. However we do get as many as 25000 there at New Years Eve. The 11 year history of the New Years Eve event shows that with adult focused entertainment, the crowd you will achieve provides very few behaviour problems. The New Years Eve event has also created sound/light/security contractors that are very familiar with the venue and its operation The adjacent colonnade and arches provide a great place for your sets and decorations where they can have a strong effect on the look of the venue but be up and out of reach of the public. The venue has plenty of power available The concept and performers you have chosen would, in my opinion, be ideal for the HB audience and would get strong support. The stage area may need a thrust added – but this is simple on the flat ground available. Road closures in this area are simple to achieve. I hope your proposal to RNZ2011 is successful and we are able to welcome the show to Hawke‟s Bay during RWC2011. Confidential “DOOBIES, EAGLES AND WEST COAST ROCK” Show Featuring The Barry Leef Band with Kimi Tupaea Barry Leef’s “Doobies, Eagles & West Coast Rock” Show continues to go from strength to strength, Since 2005 Barry has been leading this all-star nine-piece band of Sydney's best singers and musicians in a show that pays tribute to some of the world’s favorite bands from the 60s, 70s and 80’s – The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater, Santana and more. Ex NZ patriot and one of Australia’s all-time great singers, Barry Leef has featured on over 170 TV and radio advertisements during 20 years as Sydney’s number one session vocalist. He has also fronted legendary Aussie bands Bakery and Supermarket, led the in-house band at Sydney’s Musician’s club for ten years, and performed with Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, Elvin Bishop, Tom Jones and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter to name a few. As anyone over 30 will know, the bands featured in “Doobies, Eagles & West Coast Rock” had over 100 worldwide hits between 1971 and 1990 and have all become staples of classic rock radio over the past 25 years. Their music is diverse, sophisticated, danceable, loved universally by adult music fans. The key to kick starting the venture was discovering vocalist Kimi Tupaea, who has the remarkable capacity to sound very much like one of the world’s most unique voices, Mike McDonald, whose entry into The Doobie Brothers in the late 70’s reignited their success with a second wave of big chart hits such as Takin' It to the Streets, What a Fool Believes, Little Darlin’, and Minute by Minute. Every song in the show is a proven favorite with audiences that grew up with this music, most of whom now fit the huge “baby boomer” demographic, including – The Doobie Brothers; The Eagles; Listen to the Music, Hotel California Rockin' Down the Highway Life in the fast lane Long Train Runnin' Desperado China Grove One of These Nights Black Water Lyin’ Eyes Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me), Heartache Tonight Little Darlin’, Rocky Mountain Way (Joe Walsh) Takin' It to the Streets, Jesus is just Alright What a Fool Believes, Creedence Clearwater Revival Minute by Minute.
