New Aquitaine spirit

New wave spirit

New Aquitaine is the largest region in France. It is as diverse as
it is surprising, with nature, the great outdoors, vibrant cities and
legendary beaches. So, no matter what type of holidays you’re
looking for, there’s bound to be a destination for you.
New Aquitaine conjures up famous places, like Bordeaux and
the city of wine, Lascaux and the Dordogne Valley (which attrac-
ted more than 500,000 visitors in its very first year after opening),
Biarritz and the Basque Country, Poitiers and Futuroscope (where
visitor numbers grew by 6%), Cognac, Pau and the Pyrenees, or
Limoges and its skilled craftsmanship.
But there is also 750 km of fine sandy coastline, with ports from
                                                                         Michel DURRIEU

rise in international flight connections has slashed distances and
travel times even more.
All this diversity attracts more than 27 million tourists each year
and we’re aiming for 32 million by 2020! The region’s appeal is
based a spirit of sharing, fun-loving, welcoming and gourmet spi-
rit, one that embodies the quality of life that you’ll find in gastro-
nomy and fine dining.
We love sharing this inquisitive and innovative spirit with all those
who come to visit us.

So, see you soon in New Aquitaine.

New Aquitaine spirit
Festive and sporting spirit
There’s no end of cultural activities, with museums,
strolls in small, charming villages, visits to UNESCO
world heritage sites or a multitude of festivals. What’s
more, the people of New Aquitaine haven’t lost their
reputation as revellers. After-work get-togethers are
legendary, and the ferias are unmissable events for
everyone.
The quality of life in New Aquitaine is also down to
its surroundings. Whether you like the peace of the
mountains or crashing waves, look no further. The At-
lantic coast is the birthplace of surfing in Europe and
riding the waves is a real religion. Each year, skiers of
all levels are drawn to the region’s 3 stunning resorts,
hidden away in the Pyrenees. New Aquitaine is the
top destination for winter sports lovers.
The region also has 4,200 km of bike paths, 51 golf
courses, and esteemed and renowned horse racing
industry and 40 marinas.
Finally, New Aquitaine’s cultural identity also comes
the ultimate team game, that binds people together
and is steeped in sporting and moral values. Yes,
rugby!

Welcoming spirit and ‘art de vivre’
New Aquitaine has FRANCE’S biggest outdoor tou-
rism accommodation offer, but the region also has
unique and original places to stay, unforgettable
experiences with local people, together with char-
ming and prestigious hotels. Spending the night in
a regional nature park, experiencing life’s pleasures
in towns and villages is all about enjoying your time
in amazing places. New Aquitaine is synonymous
with well-being. Spa therapies, fine dining, culture,
sailing, river tourism and visiting vineyards are the
region’s trump cards.
This year, nearly 28 million tourists visited New Aqui-
taine. Many came for short breaks, summer holidays,
business meetings, conferences or trade shows, for
a cultural or sporting events, or simply to visit their
families.

                                          New Aquitaine in the spotlight

For the fourth year running, Goût de / Good France is jubilantly celebrating the ‘joie de vivre’ of
French cuisine, a true bond between chefs the world over.
By adopting the Auguste Escoffier’s idea of “Epicurian dinners”, in 1912, Goût de / Good France
is enlisting chefs and embassies from around the world to serve dinners “à la française” in several
world cities, on the same day.
On 21 March, more than 2000 restaurants in 150 countries, will serve 250,000 New Aquitaine inspired
dinner menus and 8,000 people will be received in 156 embassies.
From gourmet cuisine to quality bistro fare, Goût de France is helping to promote French cuisine on
the 5 continents, on behalf of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.
This is a major festive event in the making.

Biarritz is an elegant seaside resort, right in the heart
of the Basque Country. Its mild climate, beaches,
palaces and history have all contributed to sealing
its reputation. Empress Eugénie (wife of Napo-
léon III) loved to spend summers here. Her graceful
and opulent Villa Eugénie was built in 1854 on the
seashore and is now the 5-star Hôtel du Palais, one of
the most lavish palaces in Europe.
Biarritz is famous for this thalassotherapy, golf courses
and surfing.
It is renowned as one of the best surfing spots and
attracts surfers worldwide.
The town is also a popular place for golf lovers and
the region has 16 courses, all within 100 km of Biar-

Goscinny, the Musée de la Bande Déssiné (comic
book museum) is organising a major exhibition on
the influence of the cinema in his work, as well as his
own cinematographic output.
The exhibition reveals how the cinema and its most
popular genres were parodied and accentuated by
the creator, whose originality was nourished by his
extensive film culture. Forty years after his death,
Goscinny’s characters still continue to contribute to
popular international culture.

The Basque Country: Espadrille 4 ever
Based in the heart of the Basque Country, Espadrilles
‘Made in France’ have been produced for the last 150
years, here in Mauléon, the capital of the Soule and
ex-Bastide town.
The Don Quichosse company has handed its know-
how down from one generation to the next and the
firm has secured the label of “Entreprise du Patri-
moine Vivant” (living heritage company, or EPV). The
company museum uses short texts and old photos to
tell the life of the espadrille, designed in the traditio-
nal way, hand-stitched from natural, ecological and
biodegradable products, such as jute, cotton and
leather. The espadrilles embody nature, colour and
the pleasure of sharing a pleasurable getaway.
Each summer, Mauléon organises the Espadrille Fes-
tival on 15 August, which is a must-see event.

Bottled gold, with a new saffron-infused wine
produced in Lot-et-Garonne
A wine grower from Duras and saffron producer from
Casseneuil teamed up to produce the first saffron
wine and 1,000 bottles have just been put on sale. It
took several months to perfect the wine, to neutralise
the bitterness produced by the spice and time was
also needed to find the right balance between the
three grape varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Sémillon
and Muscadelle) so that the combination with the
saffron and the wine was both harmonious and inte-
resting. The slightly sweet wine is best drunk chilled
and is a good match with aperitifs or desserts. The
saffron-infused wine is produced by Jean de Blanc
and the Maison du Safran.

Egiategia makes wine in Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay
As an ardent admirer of vines since his childhood,
Emmanuel Poirmeur became an agronomist and
oenologist. After a career packed with intense expe-
riences both in France and abroad, he returned to
his home to the Basque Country, in 2007, where he
founded EGIATEGIA and developed a patent for
winemaking and ageing wines underwater. Fermen-
tation happens in tanks 15 metres below the waves
in Saint-Jean-de-Luz Bay. This pioneering and sur-
prising winemaking method produces aromas in the
wine that would not otherwise develop without this
unique patented subsea fermentation process. The
wine cellar is based in the port area of Socoa, in Ci-
boure, and is open to the public for visits.

Flavoured oysters from the So’ooh company
This is a world first! The So’ooh Company is marke-
ting oysters flavoured with ginger, shallots and mus-
cat grapes, or even raspberries!
So’ooh is based in Marennes, next to the oyster far-
mers’ huts and is the only oyster farming company to
produce favoured oysters. It took Joffrey Dubault 4
years to perfect his secret recipe. The temperature,
saltiness of the water, density of natural flavours and
the oysters themselves are all variables that must be
scrupulously adhered to.
When the oysters reach maturity, they are moved to a
settling tank in which the natural flavours have been
added. By filtering this water for several hours, the
flavour of the oysters is transformed and the whole
process is completely natural.

Hôtel La Fabrique,
a zen-like and vintage location
La Rochelle
La Fabrique is a new hotel in La Rochelle, that com-
bines the old Terminus Hotel and the Fabrique. The
ground floor of this new hotel is split into two parts.
To the left of reception is a bar and lounge, decora-
ted in “industrial-vintage” style, with wonderful black
and white photos of the old Terminus Hotel. To the
right is an immense, bright open area, with two floors
of orange metallic balconies that makes it feel like
being in a cruise ship.

Jo&Joe, an “alternative and cool place” for surfers
Hossegor
AccordHotels has taken an innovative approach to create an “Open House” called Jo&Joe, to appeal to mil-
lennials. Neither a hotel, nor a youth hostel, nor rental, it is actually a hybrid concept. The idea is to create a
place where travellers (or tripsters) and people living in the local area (townsters) can meet. The Basque and
Landes-style house and outbuilding are just undergoing the finishing touches to renovation work. The house
sits in a wooded 1-hectare plot, just 400 metres from the sea, in this seaside resort renowned for surfing.
Inside, the decor is rather cool and stylish and has been though out jointly with designers from Quiksilver
and Roxy. Jo&Joe Hossegor has 145 beds in a choice of sleeping arrangements. These include, the Together
(for 7 to 12 people), the Out of the Ordinary (for 10 people) and the Yours (which can accommodate 2 to 5
people). For common areas, there is the Happy House, reserved for tripsters (washing machines and dryers,
kitchen, etc.) and the playground, with bar and restaurant, open to all guests.
Activities include masterclasses, yoga, paddle boarding, or events held in conjunction with Quicksilver and
Roxy.
