Ñ Public Works New Year: By: Tom Schroeder Here we are welcoming not only a new year by retiring the old, we are also welcoming a new decade as well; 2020! I do remember when my eyesight was good, but alas, my “vision” has succumbed to the march of time. Hopefully we have made the best of this past year and have positioned ourselves for a successful start with the new year. Best wishes to you and yours. To say the least, 2019 was a very challenging year for the public works department. We did not necessarily have more to do than any other year. We did keep up with weekly services and accomplished all of our seasonal chores and activities as well. What made it so challeng- ing was the oscillating weather patterns that seemed to deliver extreme conditions all year long. The first month of winter failed to provide us with Here’s to everyone having a great 2020! a white Christmas, but it appears that there will be a chance to have snow on the ground before New Year’s Eve. I will fully expect that the winter season will have plenty of snow and cold and everything in between for us to deal with. That being said, please be good neigh- bors and place snow on your own property and not onto neighboring terraces or parkways and definitely not in the street! Please remember to place all collectable materials on the terrace or your driveway apron. I have a couple of requests of you. The first would be to consider turning on porch lights or your entrance lights from dusk to dawn. I have noticed how much of a difference it makes around the homes that currently have lights on during hours of darkness along the areas in-between street light placements. An example is at the Dailey Cabin, I placed dusk to dawn LED bulbs in the exterior fixtures and left the switch on. Each bulb has a sensor of its own that made it so easy and has made an incredible difference in illuminating what was a very Trash/Recycling dark and shadowed structure. Heating Safety: There is something relaxing about the We hope to see you there. winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace… Unfortunately heating equipment, including chimneys, are one of the leading causes of home fires and injuries. By following a few simple safety tips and taking precautions you can help prevent most heating fires from occurring. Be warm and safe this winter! Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. Never use your oven to heat your home. Install and maintain a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating equipment according to local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manu- facturer, for fuel burning space heaters. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to help pre- vent sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. Test smoke alarms at least once each month. Keep Your Hydrant Clear: Once snow begins to fly, please be sure to shovel around the fire hydrant near your home. Firefighters rely on fire hydrants as a source of water when fighting fires. If the hydrant nearest your home is covered with snow, emergency responders waste precious time shoveling, or worse, can’t locate it at all. A fire can double in size every twenty seconds, so being proactive by clearing the snow from around your fire hy- drant could mean the difference between life and death for you or someone you love. villageofmaplebluff.com 6
