National President’s Message Welcome to the 2018 edition of the Australian Institute of Building’s Professional Excellence in Building National Awards Magazine. Based on my experiences attending State and National events during my term as National President, I know that you will all find the list of entries and award winners inspirational, underscoring the level of professionalism in building and construction. Repeated often, these Awards are unique in that they have a key focus on how a structure was built and not what was built, distinguishing individual excellence and the Institute’s conferral of a “Professional Excellence Award” reserved only for those that apply superior knowledge and skill in practice. Reflecting on the results of the individual chapter events, it has been highlighted once again the greatness of the building and construction industry both domestically and internationaly with extremely high standards achieved and illlustrated by all of the entrants. So to all leaders and members of the project delivery teams involved with the works, the Institute salutes you. In advance, I congratulate all the Professional Excellence Awards entrants and wish them well in the National Judging and in their on going career in their chosen profession. Please take time to review this book and reflect on what we have achieved in this years Professional Excellence in Building Awards and in our building and construction Industry led by us – the industry’s professionals. interior goran ColoviC ConstruCtion Hansen Yuncken Pty ltd adelaide town hall - Queen adelaide room High Commendation team members: Anthony Battaglia, Sam Verco & Monique Turner. Reserved for Lord Mayoral receptions only, the Queen Adelaide Room is located on the ground floor of the Adelaide Town Hall building. Constructed between 1864 and1866 and after having a number of uses over the past 150 years, the culturally significant room was no longer an aesthetically appealing space that the City of Adelaide could be proud of. The project worked to restore the room to its former historic glory by undertaking a refurbishment of the space based on its original design that was never fully executed due to funding. Works including forming new openings and recesses in existing walls, new curved plasterboard walls, cornice and pilasters, decorative timber doors and door case, along with painting, gilding and hand printed wall paper throughout, were all undertaken by artisan trade contractors. Mechanical and electrical services to the room were upgraded and new feature lighting, data and audio-visual systems were seamlessly integrated so not to distract from the grandeur of the space. All works were undertaken with no disruption to the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Councillors, staff and the public visiting the building.
